This is what is likely in the works. Add Sims as a role player to that, and Rishard Matthews in for a couple hundred snaps.
The main reason for signing a guy like this is so we don't enter the draft with a gaping need at perimeter WR. Because honestly right now we don't have a proven (vet) WR who can line up outside and win with even moderate consistency. Cameron is the closest thing...and he's got huge health questions. I've not been a fan of what Crabtree's brought to the table since he got to the League, but I do like the idea that seems to be behind this. Take a shot on a guy who fills a huge need and is coming from a bad situation. You're banking on his production picking up in a new environment and new system with a new QB. I think the odds of that happening are decent. He's not going to be a feature/high volume guy anyway. He's just a guy you can feel okay about lining up on the outside, even if it's not a huge snap total. And we don't have that at the moment.
not a dumb question, sometimes they do and sometimes they dont. Usually, its a workout with the coach of that particular group and then for receivers the jugs machine.
Crabtree did well earlier in his career because he was getting more targets. Enter Harbaugh, trading Smith, enter Kapp (read option) ,having Davis and Boldin as primary targets and not to mention Gore... He was an afterthought in that Offense. Would love to have him here..
People are overreacting IF Crabtree ends up here, he is still a better outside option than Hartline. A healthy Cameron is a more dangerous weapon than Clay. With the ascend of Landry, Gibson would have been just a depth slot guy. Matthews can replace him from within the organization. You can debate the merits of Wallace vs. Stills, but considering their respective cap hits, you can't debate the increase in value.
True. But a one yr show me deal couldn't hurt. We're not in a position to thumb our noses at any halfway decent WR.
I'd prefer Jennings...but I'm a Jennings fan...Crabtree wouldn't hurt my feelings at all either. Still go for a #1 in the draft...we need it...it's been how long?
Is it naive to think Rishard Matthews will have a bigger role this season? He's shown some nice flashes from time to time... I keep waiting and waiting for him to blossom, but it never seems to happen
It wouldn't mean we're done, could mean we don't have to take one early in the draft. Stills, Crab, Landry, Matthews, Cameron plus a rook wouldn't be too bad, especially if we had a strong run game to go with them.
I nearly brought up Crabtree a week ago, but waited to see if anyone else had the same idea. Just know the name. Didnt know about his injury. Does he fit the scheme?
I like this. IMO, he was in a bad WR situation, stuck with a non traditional QB who struggles throwing the ball many times. Are his past injuries a concern? Absolutely, but I think at the right price, on a 1 year deal, we should pull the trigger.
if crabtree and with cameron i'd say our te's and wr's are at least equal to last year, if not a smidgen better than last year.
If we do sign Crabtree, do we even take a WR in the draft at all? Our WR corps will be: Crabtree, Landry, Stills, Matthews, and Hazel. I read that the staff is high on Hazel as well, so what do we do if we draft a rookie? Do we keep 6 or try to stash Hazel in the practice squad? I think if we get Crabtree we'll only draft a WR if he's the absolute BPA.. if there's any doubt as to whether a WR is the BPA at any of our picks, we should go with another position, IMO.
Great article here with the following conclusion: That's the Dolphins and Ryan Tannehill to a T, folks. http://www.thebackyardbanter.com/reception-perception-impending-free-agent-michael-crabtree.html
He tore his achilles... AKA death. He'll never be the same. And Greg Jennings has a far greater array of skills.
Yup. I really don't know if Crabtree is healthy or if the achilles injury declined him significantly, but if not, he'd be a very intriguing addition for the reason you outlined precisely. A very good fit. A non-expensive prove-it contract could pay off big time.
True. That was the scary part about signing him. Glad he turned out OK. However, we've seen Crabtree the following year after, and he didn't return to form. If given the choice between Crabtree and Jennings, I'd take Jennings.
I wouldn't mind either to be honest, so long as both come cheap. Though I think Jennings might demand more money than Crabtree. They should still draft a WR in this draft even if they get a veteran in FA. Any veteran they get is likely a prove-it type of deal, or a temporary type of deal. They need to continue to seek young cheap talent in the draft.
It's not Crabtree. It's Crabtree, Stills, Landry and Cameron. Not to mention young players like Rishard Matthews and Matt Hazel that they WANT to see. I wouldn't rule out a 2nd round pick on the position but even that would seem unlikely.
Honestly if Trae Waynes, Cooper or White are not there at 14 they should trade back and get back a 3rd rounder. There could be some nice value at WR in the 3rd round.
Nowadays an achilles tear takes, normally, 18 to 24 months to get a full functional recovery from. You never get back 100%, but with good rehab 98% recovery is well within the reach of most people let alone a professional athlete. 30 years ago An achilles or ACL was an injury you never recovered from but medical techniques have improved a lot.
This will be Matthews 4th year in the league, he is old in the league now. I LOVE Matthews, but I don't think he will ever get a real shot for some reason.
I'd say Kendricks or Waynes, if he's there. A wildcard here may be Todd Gurley, which I would love as well. Imagine a backfield comprised of Gurley and Miller...
