Tough to say obviously. But I also wouldn't peg him for being just a bull rusher. One of the nice qualities about him is his hustle and ability to disengage, go around people. That's probably the reason he's got 9 sacks more so than just bull rushing guys straight back. He does that too tho. He's intriguing. I remember hearing some draft twitterati earlier this year complaining about how overrated he was saying his sacks (think like 5 at the time) were a fluke and all that so I thought I was going to end up agreeing with them when I got a look and the first thing that I saw was just that his brutal power was definitely for real. Some guys are strong like they can show up to the Combine and bench press that 225 lbs bar half a hundred times. This guy is brutally strong on the football field, like he could make a giant tractor tire his b!tch. From there you add in some unusual hustle for that 340 lbs size and let's not overthink this one. I made that mistake with Haloti Ngata way back when. Since then I've tried not to do that again with big DTs. It's the original planet theory position, after all.

If coyle stays, dont waste an early pic on defense, kid will never see the field.

Hickey is in a great spot to land us a serious talent at 14.
He is not handcuffed with an obvious need to draft from a pool of guys who play 1 or 2 positions.

Nobody will bat an eye if he takes DT, WR, LB, CB, S or goes back to offensive line with 14. (although O line would probably be least popular)

Approaching the entire prospect pool with an open mind is a blessing... unfortunately we earned that approach by having so many holes where rookies could easily step in and start.

DT would be the least popular when we have major holes on our linebackers and secondary. Even the offensive line has holes. There are definite needs he needs to focus on.

Saban swore by his '12 man gamechangers' draft philosophy. Offensive line is our obvious need, however if you see a top talent slip, you grab him regardless of position. 14 is close enough to the top to catch a diamond falling.

I have to chuckle at people saying we should draft OL in the later rounds when that has worked so well for us in the past. Over and over and over again..........

Not a big fan drafting a clear LT for OG. Think that sets us poorly to resign down the road. Tweener like Martin last year would be ok. I am on the DT train though, would like to have an impact DT. Having seem some Texas action Malcom Brown is a player.

And yes those first rounders are working out so well for us also. Jake Long gone after rookie contract. Pouncey could very likely not be re-signed here (barely top 10 center looking for top 2-3 money). What I find absolutely stupid are people wanting us to draft a guy in the first and their primary reason is insurance for Albert. Not that they want a guard.......but they want insurance. You find a backup linemen with actual game expirience for that...you don't blow a first for 'insurance'. Especially when you can get good solid guards in FA and in the 2nd/3rd rounds. Plus Turner looks to be the real deal (Not many snaps but looked good so far) and has a very viable chance of nailing down that RG spot next year. He's no Dallas Thomas.

James/Turner/Pouncey/Orlando Franklin or Clint Boling/Albert and see how the veteran tackle market goes and see if you can't get a guy who has at least played a few games admirably at LT to backup Albert. Then add some veteran signings/mid to late draft picks to the line. Maybe even keep Shelley Smith thru camp.

Malcolm Brown looks like a beast and a darned good DT, but who is the clear LT being looked at for OG? Certainly not La'el Collins imo. My one concern with him is that he's either a RT or a Guard- nice versatility, but if he's at RT then James has to go to LT, not ideal. But as a starting OG and a quality backup RT- yes. For a pure LT I still like Cedric Ogbuehi from Texas A&M, but let's hope Branden Albert comes back strong.

I personally want a playmaking offensive weapon in the first. Last time we picked a guy like that was Ted Ginn back in 2007, and he wasn't even a good WR prospect. This year we might have the option of Kevin White or Jaelen Strong at 14th, either would be awesome, IMO.

thats what I'm saying. I want a true guard not some hybrid lineman playing out of place. James and Pouncey were playing better before they had to switch around places on the line. Don't want to see that again with any other players.

I think there also needs to be some consideration that defensive end might be an area for investment, as unpopular as it may be.

Not another edge rusher, but a 5 or 6-technique type guy. Kevin Coyle's defense has cast around with the problem for years and it was a bit of an underrated problem this year. If he's retained I think it's an issue to address, and likely in a other defenses, be it 4-3 or 3-4.

It would be nice but at the same time, they seem to have something already in the oven with Terrance Fede. He looked really good in preseason and I don't think it's a coincidence he made the play to win the Vikings game. He's a hell of an athlete and the players have all noticed him.

I've argued before that we don't *know* that Hickey had a great offseason or not (because we don't), but my gut feeling is he had a good draft. I think he went for singles and hit singles with JaWuan James and Jarvis Landry, but that he also hit a starter in Billy Turner (possibly even a long term left tackle), and at the very worst some contributors in Jordan Tripp and Terrence Fede. Add in Chris McCain and that's a really nice draft.

I would add Arthur Lynch to that, I think that he's going to be a solid player for us. Well rounded, just not a true deep seam threat.

I don't hold out much hope for him.

First off I didn't think he was anything special at Georgia. Second he was very much drafted to compete with Dion Sims and I don't know if you noticed but Sims made some strides in 2014 both as a blocker and a pass catcher. It sucks for Lynch that his injury allowed that to happen but that's football. He could be stuck waiting for someone to get hurt before he has the opportunity to show anything.

There's more redundancy between Lynch and Sims than Lynch and Clay, but in Lynch I see a big guy who gets after it blocking, has good hands and I like his route running, he's just not going to be a straight up seam buster. He'll add an element of toughness to the offense imo and I could see him paired with Sims or Clay in a 2 TE set and alone as the sole TE at times. Just my opinion, but I think that he'll surprise.

yeah with Clay and Simms we should look elsewhere this offseason, we got enough positions to worry about..

on offense its not so bad, I think we need that talented receiver and a compliment to miller who has high upside..and obviously one guard via free agency..

I think on defense the priority is safety to play along Jones.

And I am still of the opinion that Miami needs to continue rolling the dice at quarterback because I don't think Ryan Tannehill showed us beyond doubt that he's the guy. He didn't have the sort of year where I can sit here and say confidently that he won't turn around and suddenly follow it up with a down year. Even Nick Foles followed up his sparkling 2013 campaign with a medioce 2014 campaign and now all the sudden people are like "What if Chip Kelly trades up for Mariota..."

It's no secret who my favorite "roll the dice" quarterback is in this draft.

Something Tannehill did well, not throw INTs, isn't the most consistent thing year to year (INT%). So I can definitely see him doing worse next year in that regard. And aside from regression, it's always going to be dangerous to keep taking 40+ sacks each year. I suppose there's some skill to not getting hurt. But at some point that's going to bite you. So yeah, I'd say I'm cautiously optimistic. It wouldn't surprise me to see Tannehill go in any direction next year; better, worse, or the same.

I know you've talked up Cato from Marshall, is it him? If so, what round is he likely to go in? 2nd? I hate to waste resources on a QB when the QB we have has a terrible offensive line and 2-3 WR that need to be purged.

Yes it's him. I have almost zero visibility on where he's going to go in the draft.

Think of it this way. You need a backup. You talk about wasting resources but Matt Moore cost us what like $4+ million a year? Talk about wasted resources, that right there gets you halfway there to a Branden Albert contract.

That should have happened last year, while adding a stud Guard and the big/fast WR like we all want to be drafted this year. It was there for the taking.

I think we take a big WR first then trade down in the 2nd and grab a LB or CB then a G. 3rd round should be either LB/CB. I know we need safety help but I'm ok with Jones/Delmas plus FA pickup. There isn't a stud FS that I can point to in this draft and they're a rarity to begin with. I think our secondary issues are high caused by our problems up front plus lack of quality depth. IMO the biggest thing we're lacking right now is a big target for Tanny. We need to score TDs in the red zone and he needs another security blanket. Its been far too long that we have needed that kind of guy in our receiving corps and nows the time to get him, especially with so many good options in tge draft.

Why not? He's done well at LT, and has LG experience. He is not ideal height but has long arms. He seems ideal. Play him at LG until Albert cannot go anymore or his contract runs out and then Collins could take over at LT after that.

I don't know where YOU saw Turner play, I must have missed it. Preseason is practice. He apparently did so well he couldn't see the field during the REAL season. Just because we WANT him to start, doesn't mean squat. Other that that, if we can't draft our own players, we will never be much. We can't afford to constantly buy other teams players. Again.....................chuckle......

I like La'el Collins quite a bit, but I see him as a power RT or a Guard. I hope I'm wrong and he is a fit at LT, but what I see in him and James are two RTs. That's the rub, I think that James is a RT- with any luck Billy Turner will progress at what I think is his true position of LT, Albert comes back strong and I think that Collins would be a beast at OG or RT. For a pure LT I like Ogbuehi, but from my perspective we've had back to back seasons ruined by OL injuries and lack of depth. So bring on Collins for oline quality and depth, a guy who could play Guard and RT well imo, I'd love to have him, great power player with some movement skills. I would have loved to have drafted his teammate Trai Turner last year as a pure Guard and a great 3rd round value, but that's another story.
