Really wouldn't shock me if Cody Fajardo ends up a better version of Marcus Mariota. So similar, but Cody is surprisingly good making throws with high difficulty ratings into tight windows with alarming accuracy. What Fajardo needs to do is calm down, keep working on his footwork and balance, and learn to make better decisions. But the same is true of Mariota.
Here. Do yourselves a favor. Watch Cody Fajardo against BYU: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MUS55FdCtBA&feature=player_embedded Then watch Marcus Mariota against UCLA: http://proxy-41.dailymotion.com/vid...098-8fc8lq59-43a5fe989210cf08febc548b50829373 Tell me for yourself. What are the differences there? Keep in mind, BYU's defense is VERY good. This isn't necessarily some situation where you say ah well one guy played a real defense and the other guy played a crappy one. That's really not true. I think I'd argue that BYU's defense is flat out better. Just one of those things...I love putting players up side-by-side to really dig in and see the differences. It can be illuminating. It really kind of reminds me of when Colin Kaepernick was kind of a poor man's version of Cam Newton, except I think both quarterbacks were better prospects than Mariota/Fajardo.
Just another day at the office..5td passes....first int in 253 attempts. man, when this kid goes early first there's gonna be some folks with some questionable statements.
looks to me thats all you got left to hang on to..you are completely underestimating this kids skill set.
I don't usually have tons of time to designate to single college players. Which is why I never consider myself some sort of guru who is always right. Its just my two cwnts based on what I've caught so far. Maybe eventually ill get to it.
It's really not just the fumbles. There are a whole lot of issues including accuracy at distance, his handling of pressure, the number of bad decisions he makes, etc. You talk about how he's only thrown one pick this year, but I sure as hell have seen a quite a few balls that should've been picked. That offense gives him such an advantage with such wide open windows and a lot of backfield space. And you'll notice when the OL was struggling a little more, he was falling apart.
he's gone thru four starting tackles CK, most of his skill players are freshman, his defense sucks..yet the kid stays poised, reads the field, has perfect mechanics, can run the football when is called upon, and can extend plays with the best of them..I don't see a problem when pressure collapses the pocket, see a kid that can escape with anticipation, and make a play.. I see him see the receiver open, and thats a big deal for me..on top of it lol, he's 6'4, with blazing speed..this is the ultimate specimen for the read option offense..I have waaay ahead of a Cam newton. ill say it again like I said if he came out last year, this is the #1 overall pick..or at the least top 3.Personally, I'm all in on him, and I get him the best chip kelly disciple I can find.
oh hes damn good. Down 21-0 with two mins left in the second quarter and he still scores 6 tds and wins the game? Jesus
Someone wake me up when Winston loses. That guy is just a gamer. Everyone is going to differ on what they think of him off the field…but on the field its Winston and then everybody else. He is going to be a star in the NFL.
Winston is a great qb prospect with flawed character, I'm gonna go with Mariota and that is what this thread is about.
I thought Jameis Winston showed a lot of character on the football field last night. This was the night that everyone picked them to be upset by Louisville. The fans were raucous, it was a short week, on the road against one of the top defenses in college football with one of the best pass rushes in college football. The Florida State offensive line has been an immense disappointment all year long with guys like Cam Erving, Josue Matias and Tre Jackson, all thought to be top prospects heading into the season, underperforming all year long and allowing a lot of pressure in on the quarterback. And sure enough the upset was on as Louisville ran out to a 21-0 lead and Jameis Winston uncharacteristically threw three interceptions. But when push came to shove, Winston executed one hell of a comeback and it's just amazing how unflappable he is. It's just very hard to beat this quarterback because it means having to stop him for four quarters and quite frankly, I'm not sure a single team has done that in his entire college career. As for subjects such as my evaluation of Pro Bowl quarterback Cam Newton, or my having stated about Marcus Mariota on December 7th, 2013 "He'd have struggled to get taken in the 2nd round this year. I'm not sure it would've happened. I think 3rd round." those are off-topic areas of conversation and I'd like to keep the thread on-topic.
There were no backhanded insults in the post you quoted. I have read it several times and I have found none. The post was strictly on topic. On the other hand your post went off the reservation in several ways. It was a direct attack, focusing on attempting to bring up old posts (and relaying them incorrectly, I might add) in order to try and "get" someone. You actually did that twice in the post, and then finished off with a pretty direct insult. I edited the post to take the off-topic and TOS violations out of it. I apologize if you are having difficulty engaging in conversation that complies with the TOS. I personally do not think it that difficult. That said, that will be the last we discuss about this topic. If you would please remain on-topic, I will do the same.
telling me that only smart men will disregard the character part of the evaluation is not only insulting, its completely wrong.. You said it so its on topic..
Its going to be interesting to see if GMs really knock Winston because of his off the field antics. There were reports that some teams moved him down or off their boards and I know Mel Kiper dropped him down too, maybe he drops, but if he wins another title and looks good doing it I can't see how he's not the #1 overall pick. I still get a bad feeling when I see him talk and I think he's a train wreck waiting to happen but someone is going to say **** it and take him and roll the dice. The Raiders might be in a nice spot if they have the #1 overall pick, they can trade it because they already have Carr and possibly get a huge return. I think Gruden takes that job and walks into a great situation in Oakland.
That stuff is going out the window when he's clearly the best player in next year's draft and it's not even close. Nothing rattles him, it doesn't matter if he's been accused of rape, theft, signing autographs for money, hell there's been people that have insulted his speech - he's from Hueytown you're not going to grow up sounding like Malcolm X in Hueytown. Nothing shakes him, he still wins, he still produces. This guy was offered scholarships from every major school in the country as the second rated quarterback coming out of high school behind Gunner Kiel, one of those was Stanford and they don't give scholarships to dummies. He's ready for the NFL, and unfortunately this guy is the Jets' wet dream (and they're in position for him). So if he's there, the Jets' would be stupid to pass. You look back in the last 10 years, the Jets' have had to deal with some mentally weak minded quarterbacks, remember Mark Sanchez bringing notes and reading them outloud on the podium and said in the end there shouldn't be any questions because he covered it all? And you've already seen how mentally weak Geno is. Jameis can handle New York.
I dont think anybody is questioning that he's good... I do think he had quite a few things go his way the second half, and the numbers don't completely tell the whole story. I just think for his sake, he better hope he gets to an organization that can keep him on a leash at least until his mind catches up to his body.
I said smart football men will keep their eye on what kind of football asset he is. And I stand by that. Judging what kind of football asset a prospect is doesn't mean ignoring character. But it does mean ignoring irrelevant distractions which have no real standing going forward. I'm sorry if that insults you? I don't understand why you should feel insulted by it. To each their own.
You should probably not trust "reports" of teams taking him off their draft board. And actually when it comes to a quarterback that's even more the case. A team like the Green Bay Packers sitting pretty with Aaron Rodgers in the garage can say literally whatever they want about any and every quarterback, and in my experience they tend to be quite vocal in bashing every quarterback prospect that comes out.
Well I agree that the teams that are not even considering him are teams like you mentioned but we will have to see. I think he honestly has some major red flags and with the NFL basically having a one strike and you're out conduct policy he's a huge risk. Heck he could still wind up in trouble before he leaves college. I don't know, I just get a bad feeling about this kid when I hear him talk and honestly there are some major red flags with him. I think Florida State has seriously coddled the kid too so he might be a guy that is bigger than the league (in his mind) before he gets there. I think Cam Newton has had to overcome similar types of things so its possible. I've been watching Kiper for decades and really this was the first time I can remember him really just basically giving up on the kid and I guarantee Kiper knows a heck of a lot more about Winston than you or I do. Also there is still more stuff looming around Winston that could hurt his college career and draft status. Its a weird situation, I can't remember someone this highly regarded being such a huge risk.
Your generalization of what are relevant red flags to a GM is insulting..Here's why, I haven't followed his public screw ups that closely, you seem to be basing everything that's on the record, stealing some food because he had the hook up from the store manager, probabaly going over the line with a girl, getting some cash under the table with his autographs, and standing on a table being a gross punk, with his level of talent, maybe those things will be overlooked, however, your not taking into account what some think of him in general and how his character, leadership and personality will fit at the next level..Maybe some don't take the risk because they just don't think his personality will fly.I don't think that makes them not smart..the game sometimes comes down to intuition.. My red flags of this player were not found on the record..they were traits that I don't like.
So I guess you see insult when someone disagrees with you? That's a shame. But it does explain why you seem to take it so personally that I'm not overly high on Marcus Mariota. Well either way if you're insulted because I don't share your opinion, I can't help that. But I can at least ask you to observe the TOS and stay on topic.
I'm not insulting anyone that disagrees with me, this is all on topic because this is what you said "Everyone can get distracted if they wish by rape allegations that have no real standing and will not result in any damage to Winston's NFL career, or they can get distracted by a literally harmless and common prank shouted at a raucous student center...but smart football men will keep their eye on the simple question of what kind of football asset he projects as at the next level." It is your opinion that what he has done and has put on the record, is "harmless and common prank", and only ""not smart people"" will lower his stock because of it.. I'm disagreeing because you don't know what GMs know and feel besides what he's put on the record, personally, he's done as much to red flag me off the record as he's done on it..maybe some others feel the same. He's very talented, and the evaluations of his character will continue, just dont tell folks their not smart or that their opinion isn't justified because they don't agree that what you think Should be ignored if your smart.
This is not a player that I will say that he won't make it, he's just to talented for me to ignore... whY I would take Mariota over him is simply because I have seen some things that I despise.
I have no problem with your disagreeing about Jameis Winston. I do insist that smart football men will see beyond distractions and get to the question of the quality of football asset that Jameis Winston represents. Whether that question is affected by some of the stuff that's happening or not, is obviously up for interpretation. But the smart football men will see what is useless distraction, and what is a real concern.
Honestly I think a lot of teams that will be in position to draft him will overlook the character concerns, Oak/NY... Jax wont draft him, Bucs might. But he holds his future in the next 6 mo keeping his nose clean.
I think if any of those teams that needs a quarterback gets a crack at him, he's off the board. That includes the Jets and Bucs but not the Jags and Raiders.
Yeah true... Blanked on Carr... Anyways, its lining up to be 1. FSU, 2. Auburn, 3. Oregon... with more than an opportunity for Auburn to lose against Alabama or Georgia. Dont see Oregon losing to OkSt or Utah. Could have your Winston vs Mariota bowl.
