The non FG attempt on 4th down The non rushing attempt on 2nd down following GB timeout The Timeout called on 4th and 10 The Timeout called prior to final snap ...our coaching staff blew this game. the non tackle on the fake spike..was just icing on the cake by a player. /end thread
LOL. The 2 picks, missing a wide open Clay in the end zone and the 0.5 net yards per attempt on that last drive by our QB had nothing to do with the loss?
That depends on your perspective I guess. We (Philbin) had him in a pretty great position, a 4 point lead with 3 minutes left with the ball in his hand, despite Rodgers 100 passer rating to Tannehill's 83 passer rating. When your QB is losing the passer rating differential by that much its very difficult to win the game.
I say no, because there's no guarantee the rest of the game went the exact same way...particularly if we had a sizable lead. That changes gears for the other team, so there's really no way of knowing what would've happened in that situation. In the end, we had the lead, and pissed it away.
The fake spike was a bone-head decision by Rodgers that probably saved the game for them b/c of piss poor execution by Finnegan.
These are the moments where coaching takes over. Recall the Chargers/Patriots playoff game a few years back. It's late in the game, maybe 6.5 minutes left, Chargers are up 21-13 and McCree intercepts Brady on 4th down. The best play would have been to knock it down, the second best play would be the interception and hold on to the damn ball at all costs. If he doesn't fumble the game is all but over. Instead he carries it like a loaf of bread trying to score and Troy Brown barely has to touch it to knock it out. McCree is a knucklehead and Chargers teams were woefully unprepared for situational football under Marty and Norv.
Yeah a 49ers player did the same thing Monday night, should have went down to seal the game but he took it to the house. It worked out but does that mean Harbaugh a bad coach? And Finnegan did try to keep the player in bounds, being stupid or unaware wasn't his problem on that play.
The basic rule is if you have a 1st down at the 2min warning with the ball and the opponent has no time outs, then the game is over with 3 kneel downs.. So, when we had 2&9, following the final GB Timeout, with 3:05 on the clock, its as if we really had 1:05 left if we start the clock and have 2 downs to gain 9 yds and that 1st down at the 2min warning. The most important object on the snap was to start the clock, but our coaching staff calls a pass play. All we needed was a run play to start the clock, regardless of production, and see what down and distance 3rd down equated to. Our coaching staff blew the game, multiple times, but at that moment, that 2nd down non run call was the most egregious. Every error of judgment that followed during the GB wining drive was triggered from that moment.
