They just had Peter King on NBC saying that some other NFL teams could challenge whether Parcells could hire a GM for the Phins. Does anyone know why this would be an issue???
Care to elaborate on King's reasoning? It's hard to say one way or another if we don't have any details.
King said that since Bill Parcells accepted the position of V.P. of Football Operations and made it clear that he would not be the Dolphin's GM, other teams could challenge Parcells if he asked to interview other team's GM for a GM position with Miami.
I didn't see the broadcast, but he is probably talking about the situation with Pioli and Ireland. To hire away from another team, Parcells would have to prove it is a promotion job. That is why it has been mentioned that getting Ireland from Cowboys could involve us giving them draft pick(s).
Maybe, brother. But, isn't Ireland in charge of college scouting or something with the Cowboys and NOT GM?
That makes absolutely no sense. As the VP of Football Operations, Parcells has sole responsibility for hiring and firing the General Manager. Since he has stated he won't be the GM, that means the organization could be in the market for a GM. We won't give up a single thing for Jeff Ireland, if Parcells truly wishes to hire him. Ireland would see a promotion in both title--from Director of College and Pro Scouting to General Manager--and authority--final decision-making on which players to add and remove from the roster.
King made it sound like it would be "tampering" if Parcells tried to talk to other teams GM's about coming over to the Phins. Maybe King has had a little too much spiked egg nog?
Tampering happens all the time in the NFL, but charges are practically never filed. Jones has an ego, but if he files tampering charges over Jeff Ireland becoming the Miami General Manager, he's going to lose the case.
I can see the tampering thing RE: another team's "GM" but not another team's subordinate to the GM, am I right? If I am, then thanks Peter for stating the obvious
THe Impression I got from the Peter King spot was the sence that he was describing the scenario that may occur if he tries to hire Pioli from that Pats. Just he manner that King stated it he was leaving out spcific names. It will be a very intereesting Off Season
Lord of the Rings were the greatest movies ever made. NFL rules prohibit coaches and management from taking a "lateral move" while under contract. If an offensive cordinator wants to move to another team, it has to be a promotion like "assistant head coach". What I think Peter King meant was since Parcells is VP of operations then the only title left is GM. We couldn't hire a GM from another team to be GM for our team unless their contract was up. I think Scott Pioli is assistant GM which meant we could hire him and give him the GM title. Plus I think he is Parcells Son in law.
That's what I got out of it. I heard a rumor that Parcells wants Pioli to take GM then his VP with same conditions when he retires in 4 years. The Krafts will fight like heck to keep that from happening.
smoene on a diff forum said they said a team is goin to try n not allow the hiring of a GM coming to miami which would be the Patriots. thats what he said so i odono how legit it was. he said it was during hte pregame tonight.
Yeah I think he was talking about Ireland and said we would likely see this happen 2 to 3 weeks from now and they would give Parcells a hard time.
I still don't get the Jason Garrett love, but hey, I'll gladly take that trade. They can keep Garrett, we'll take Ireland.
It will definitely be interesting to see how this unfolds. I think the Cowboys and/or the Patsies will successfully argue that the final decision-making on some, but not all players will ultimately rest with Parcells; thus Ireland's move to the Dolphins would be lateral. Heck, we even have people on this board posting "My 08 Mock Draft by Bill Parcells", and some in the media are already speculating on how Parcells is going to build this team. If we were trying to snag someone from the Cardnals, the Falcons, or some other organization with less stature we might have a chance, but we are talking about the Cowboys and/or the Patriots and they probably have a lot more clout with the commissioner than we do. Of course , I hope I am totally wrong on this and we pull off the coup. One of these guys could go a long way to getting us back on track! Steve
First of all Parcells "can" hire a GM due to the fact that Parcells is VP of football operations, second miami has an incumbant GM Randy Mueller. So the idea he cant because its a dummy position is indifferent league rules dont disern how a team is run ie team A's VP of Football makes all rulings where team B's GM makes all player moves, its not for the league to decide thus a GM could be hired. Now for specific people and their current jobs if they are not already in the title of GM them they are fair game to be interviewed as long as the team grants that permission. In the case of Dallas & New England they may play hard ball but the reality is these people have worked hard for them and teams often allow them to move on out of respect for there hard work. If a team blocked an interview perhaps the person of interest could resign his position and thus be a free agent of sorts(kinda like Belichick did to the Jets) so the reality is IMO whoever Parcells wants he will get.
to clarify, what he was saying was that since Tuna is VP of Football operations, if he wants a GM, they'll only be named GM. Organizations have the right to block anybody, from GMs to coaches, from interviewing with another team UNLESS they recieve a promotion in title. In most cases, this is done by naming someone GM and VP of Operations. Since for most people it's a lateral movement, the organization can block an interview
He could name anyone he wants VP of Player Personnel too, obviously to someone who doesn't already have the title. It would be a promotion to any GM who isn't already a VP.
I believe Bill has already taken all of this into account, which is why he has stated on more than one occasion that the general manager he brings in or retains will have final say on all personnel decisions. Bill has said more than once that the duties of the general manager will be those that are defined by the NFL rules on what a general manager does. Bill is already taking measures to prevent someone like Jerry Jones from trying to block Jeff Ireland from taking the Miami GM job or even Robert Kraft in New England from blocking Scott Pioli from taking the job. I'm not sure Pioli is even interested in leaving New England though, because teams have requested permission and have been granted permission to interview him, and he has not taken any interviews. The Giants wanted to interview him last year and he turned the interview down. The Cleveland Browns wanted to interview him in 2005, and he turned that one down.
He's right, teams will say Parcells is making the decsions, not the GM, so its not a upgrade in a job. That's what Jones will say when he goes after Ireland.
No, he is wrong. Teams can say whatever they want but they will get nowhere fast. In the example of Jeff Ireland, if he were to come to Miami as GM it would be a promotion monetarily, in title and in authority from being the "Head Scout", period. In an example with Tom Heckert, he could be hired by Parcells as the VP of player personnel which would be a promotion as well. It's all about how Parcells is structuring the executive heirarchy in why Peter King is, as usual, blowing smoke up everyone's bum.
Thanks for the update KB, I haven't read where Bill has addressed these issues yet, but it is nice to know that he should be able to bring in Ireland if he wants to. Steve
The idea is that if parcells as vp of ftbl ops is picking the players directly then he is the defacto gm. andit will not be a promotion in title only. the gm usually has final say but peter king is wrong. even if parcells picks the players directly the gm job entails a llot more than just draft picks. It wont be a problem. If parcells wants him and he wants to come he will be here regardles of how dallas feels aobut it. Also it has been reported that ireland want to move up to gm so he will probably be very interested in the miami job.
