Look...I loved Jimmy Graham. I lobbied for Jimmy Graham. I was convinced he was gonna be good. So how did I do that? I saw him play and I got lucky. This is not a science. Most of it is luck.
If I recall correctly weren't there a few not-so-complimentary things said about Egnew after his rookie year by a few unnamed(?) teammates?
I'm not an Ireland supporter, but there isn't a worse game to play than "look who we could have had instead of this guy!" when it comes to the draft. You can play that game with any GM, and you'll lose every time.
Wasn't it you who said last year that "Inactive Egnew" sounded like a children's book for overweight kids? That just reminded me of it. Lolllll.
Every team message board has had the "we could have drafted randy moss, graham, gronk, anquan boldin instead of ___________________".
For those of you who don't know the backstory of that tragic dolphin drawing, during the rookie football card event they hold every year Panini asked rookies to each draw on a blank card and that card would be a limited edition card that would go out randomly in the card packs. Most guys drew stuff like their team logo or jersey or something like that. That ******ed dolphin-like creature is what Egnew drew. The collector who got the card in his pack put it up for sale on eBay and my friend Vin bought it. Still it's not quite as oddly confusing and disturbing as Lamar Miller's card...
Passing on a stud like Graham is an easier pill to swallow if you still drafted a good player, like with the Niners taking A beast like Navarro Bowman, or Denver taking Eric Decker, not when you take a bum like John Jerry. And it's also a lot easier to accept when your team is still successful on the field.
Ah. Good times. Still not sure who at Panini thought that was a good idea, and if they're still employed.
While true, winning trumps that. You think Seattle fans right now are saying that? In the case of Boldin it his closer to home because we had discussions about it, and the coach overruled it. Brees. Twice. What other team can say Brees. Twice?
Not suprised at all to see Egnew go. Called it months ago. I remember someone beating me up about it. On the plus side, #84 can go to a good player now! I'd love to see Landry switch from the QB number he wears. He'd look good in Chambers' old uni.
I think that Jarvis Landry is going to take some of the passing reps away from the TEs. The guy is a monster on those seam routes, better than Egnew. And I know his blocking is criticized here, but I don't know how much of a downgrade in blocking there is from Egnew to Landry.
For the life of me I don't get why Parcells is immune to criticism from the majority of this board when he was the one who set us up for failure and led us down that road in the first place, and your post is a perfect example of this phenomenon. It's already been established that Parcells waited on Graham. This is what he said in response to the notion of taking Graham no later than 64: "An answer like that will get you unemployed in this league. You never grade a developmental tight end in the second round. The production ceiling for that position is low; so if it works out, you did your job. If he fails, you're the guy that used a second round pick on a tight end. That grade will never get you promoted." Hate whomever you wanna hate, I don't care, but at least be accurate about it. Miami took a massive offensive guard in round 3 in 2010. Parcells loves his maulers and doesn't think highly of the tight end position, and our Head Coach at the time loved working with Jerry at the Senior Bowl, so why do you think we were ready to wait another round on Graham? Miami's coaching staff also loved working with Misi at the Senior Bowl, and guess what team didn't have a 2nd rounder to take him with unless they traded back their 1st and passed on guys like Earl Thomas, Dez Bryant, and Demaryius Thomas in the process? Miami's coaching staff was also quite familiar with Jared Odrick from Senior Bowl week, so that made a trade back all the more palatable for them. That draft was shaped around both an outdated Parcellian philosophy and players our coaching staff were enamored with during Senior Bowl week.
From Barry Jackson's latest blog post, the Dolphins's 3rd round draft picks since 2000... Apart from Vernon (and that's just 1 standout year, still time to regress...), that's ****ing tragic. http://miamiherald.typepad.com/spor...lphins-veteran-newcomers-um-heat-marlins.html
That was alright, but shows lack of urgency for greatness, as do majority of dolphins picks. Dolphins alright, but not great.
Not sure why Vernon should be set aside as a success and not Kendall Langford or Channing Crowder. None of those three should really be held above one another at this point. For that matter Wade Smith has been a very successful NFL player even if Miami mistakenly kept him at left tackle and then cut him because he couldn't play there. Will Davis looks promising too.
Is it really that tragic? Olivier Vernon, Kendall Langford, Channing Crowder all good players. That doesn't seem too bad for the third round.
I see 14 guys that were taken long enough ago to actually grade (I'm not counting Dallas Thomas or Will Davis yet)...and I see successes in Wade Smith, Channing Crowder, Kendall Langford and Olivier Vernon. That's a 29% success rate...which actually compares to the NFL success rate for that round. I think the revelation is just that 3rd round picks aren't actually as valuable as most people tend to think of them as being.
That 2012 draft is the ultimate mixed bag. There are very promising players like Tannehill, Vernon and Matthews. Then there are complete disasters like Martin and Egnew. Then you have Lamar Miller who is still a question mark. I forget who else. I think Josh Kaddu was drafted in 2012 as well.

I remember trying to explain to people that hiring Parcells was a terrible idea and that the game had passed him by in many ways. Very few agreed with me and oddly enough few agree to this day.
Very true , but that added to the pick being part of the Marshall trade it just makes it like a wound that won't close. Well now it's closed at least.
Brett Brackett has done more in 2 preseason games than Egnew did in his entire time here. If Philbin and crew were being honest with themselves, Brackett would make the 53 man roster if he keeps up his decent preseason play.
Blake Annen will likely be cut or put on practice squad in Philly because they are so deep at that position. We should bring him in. He's the tight end I wanted the most in the draft. He ran a 4.4 and could be a major seam weapon. Plus, he now has a leg up on knowing the principles of our offense, coming from Philly.
I'm not a defender of Ireland, but that was when Parcells was still running things. If you want a second thing to lay in Ireland's lap, how about trading Marshall, and leaving our WR corps depleted for an entire season?
