Some AL East injury news: Pineda has had another setback and has been shut down again. Teixeira's wrist is bugging him so he won't play Sunday or Monday. Pedroia had X-Rays on his hand, they are negative but he's getting a MRI. Will Myers has a sore wrist from running into Jennings last night in the 10th and will get tests done. Escobar has a quad injury. Maybe it would have been shorter to write who's actually healthy.
I would find it incredibly hard to believe that if Ortiz had the exact same career with the Yankees that has had with the Red Sox while acting the same way that you wouldn't be a fan of the guy. Say whatever you want about what he does or says off the field (and yes at times he can be a bit much and act like a baby) but the guy has had a great career. He's one of those guys that if he's on your team you love him but if he's not you'd hate him, I get it.
That's a not a great example, Sheffield wasn't on any Yankee Championship teams nor did he have the years for the franchise. A better example would be a Paul O'Neil, Roger Clemens or David Wells type.
So as long as you contribute to a ring you can be a total dick? Good to know. Clemens was an arrogant prick and Wells admitted he was drunk off his *** during his perfect game.. Paul rocked.. See you can be critical of your own team. "I'm just tired of dealing with the drama here. This is baseball, man...We're supposed to have fun, to have our performance out there at the highest level. Every day is something new, some drama, some more ****. I'm tired of that, man. I'm here to play baseball, man." Are you having fun, David? "Not really. Too much ****, man. Too much ****." More: "It's becoming to be the ****hole it used to be. Look around, bro. Look around. Playing here used to be so much fun. Now, every day is something new, not related to baseball. People need to leave us alone, play ball and do what we know how to do." Ortiz on playing in Boston..... Of course he is always happy right after signing a new contract.... That doesnt last long though...
No not at all you're missing my point which was if Ortiz was on your favorite team and contributed like he has with the Sox you'd like him. I'd be the first to admit that his act at times gets tired and I've said that and more on these boards. You take the good with the bad as not every player is going to be like Rivera or Jeter where they play baseball and never say anything controversial what so ever. But to say you would like or be a fan of his as a player if he was a Yankee is crazy talk.
I like Ortiz he is unduly whiny but overall he is a really good person and an even better player.... On another note, Fink was Brock Holt supposed to be this good? You cant get the kid out.....
But he acts sometimes like he's bigger then the game. And he isn't. I dislike the attitude. No doubt he's a great hitter. I just can't stand him.
But the thing is everybody knows it is just David being David, when he gets mad it is a punchline at this point, everybody just laughs at him.....except for the Sox front office because they have to pay him more than they want too..... I will say though he should in no way shape or form get the slightest bit mad when he does get hit.....for that he is wrong....
I'm not sure I agree really. Manny was being Manny. Puig is being Puig. Gomez is being Gomez. David just started being "David" after manny left.
Ortiz complaining about his contract status is a seperate issue though and it's kind of an eye roll thing at this point. He's not the first nor will be the last to do it. Ortiz has gotten hit before and hasn't gone nuts over it. Last time I remember Ortiz getting hit on purpose was when Sabathia threw at him. He put his head down and went to 1st. Ortiz's whole issue of why he got mad at getting hit by Price was because after Game 2 of the ALDS Price called him personally to apologize about his comments he made after the game and said he didn't have any issues with Ortiz and then the first time Ortiz stands in the batter's box Price drills him? That's kind of bush no? Why even apologize then? Let's not forget David Price hasn't been the model citizen since Game 2 either. Price likes to talk about Ortiz being bigger than the game, did he forget about how after his Game 2 loss he went on Twitter listing how great he is? Bottom line is if Price or any pitcher has an issue with Ortiz or anyone else pimping home runs the best revenge is to get the batter out. I think at times it makes sense to send a message to the other team but in this case it wasn't, I think it certainly did more harm than good there as I think it woke up the Sox a bit (ala when Dempster hit Arod last year). That's incorrect. Ortiz has always been Ortiz since 2003 he hasn't changed except for the complaining about his contract situation which started just before his first extension happened.
I'd say the best avenue if a guy pimps a home run and you don't like it. Is to hit the guy. And ortiz may have been a lot more outgoing since 2003. But he wasn't always the cocky **** he is now.
I should of been more specific. It's one thing to pimp a HR. And another to stand there and stare from home plate. He deserved to get drilled. Take it like a man and shut up.
That's what he does though and has been doing it for over 10 years now. Whether someone thinks it's right or wrong he's always among the slowest (if not the slowest) to get around the bases and he does take his time getting out of the batter's box. And again Ortiz has gotten drilled on purpose before and went to 1st base with no incident. His issue was what Price said after Game 2 to him, which people who are taking the anti-Ortiz side ignore.
Again right or wrong, Ortiz has been doing that for forever and again, right or wrong, gets a free pass because the guy is so well loved and respected among the MLB players.
I don't take issue with the amount of time it takes to get around the bases. And I agree that if Price said after game 2 he didn't have an issue with it, this price is two faced. My issue is, Price shouldn't have been ok with it and Price should of drilled him. Which he did. I just highly doubt he said what Ortiz claimed he said.
We'll never know, it's totally a he said, she said thing. Although to my knowledge Price didn't say Ortiz was wrong about the call, although not sure if he was asked specifically either. Should be extremely interesting/fun to see what Ortiz does if he does hit another HR off of Price again. If he had hit one on Friday night, I have no doubt Ortiz might have done a few back flips, maybe a moonwalk move or two and it probably would have taken him 20 minutes just to get to 1st base.
By all means Cashman continue to pay for every free agent and dont build your depth through the farm system.... I hate this FO with a passion....
Is it time for the monthly reminder that Cashman still didn't or hasn't signed a back up 1B with his starting 1B coming off of wrist sugery and that same 1B was talking to the press during the offseason and during ST about how he's worried about his wrist holding up for the year. Honestly though this isn't anything new with Cashman, he hasn't done a good job with signing depth players in the past 3 or 4 years. The farm system is a seperate issue all together but bottom line is Cashman keeps putting together an old team while his drafts haven't been good in years. Serious question, if the Yankees don't make the playoffs this year, when do you think the next time they will without continuing to spend big money on FAs as they will need to go out and get a SS and at least 1 SPer for next year and possibly a 3B.
Mookie Betts has been promoted to Triple A. Has been playing more CF than 2B lately. If he continues to hit I don't see how he isn't with the Sox this year. Mookie's total Double A numbers this year: .355/.443/.551 6 HRS, 27 XBH, 22 SB, 35 BB and 20 Ks in 54 games. The guy had more extra base hits, walks and SBs than Ks. I'm excited.
Supposedly they are going to sign Morales after the draft, but even still that isnt going to make a difference......they are an embarrassment.....Soriano needs to be DFA....
Two really good articles here: One is the oral history of the Yankees #1 pick in the 1991 draft Brien Taylor: http://espn.go.com/new-york/mlb/sto...se-fall-new-york-yankees-pitcher-brien-taylor The other is Jake Peavy talking about his start against the Braves and going inning by inning of his thought process during the game: http://www.providencejournal.com/sp...ssects-his-last-outing-against-the-braves.ece
You guys have that Division right where you want them....people are healthy, and there are remedies for you guys but it takes tough decisions to be made. I mean do they want to start Hassan? Of course not, but he is on the 40-man....the 40-man roster dropoffs and add-ons are your answer. And right now again there is no reason to panic mainly because nobody expected TB to be this bad....Balt will be competitive but dont have enought o make a real run barring a trade. The Yanks are the definition of inconsistent and old which is never good in baseball. And Toronto?? Eh color me unimpressed, talk to me after the trade deadline about them.... I will say though, Melky turned out to be a pretty good ballplayer and why NY let him go is beyond me.... How would he look in your outfield right now Finklestein?
With Tampa falling apart i would think they would try to trade Price. Toronto is known to be looking at starters would Tampa trade with them and do they have the pieces?
They have some but I am not sure what it takes from TB's POV...... Also not sure they would trade in the Division.....Price to the Sox?
Well I think getting the Sox healthy is key. Napoli will be back on Sunday so he'll certainly help. Victorino won't be ready for any rehab games until at least next weekend and getting him back will be huge. The Sox still need to do something with the OF though, they badly need a LHB to platoon with Gomes and take some pressure off of JBJ. For whatever reason it seems like Nava is in the dog house and he's not really an option. I still think the Sox will need to go outside of the organization to get that OFer. Yeah all kidding aside Melky did turn into a valuable player. I think he probably had to get out of NY as him with Cano seemed to be a bad mix, whether the stories are true about them having too much fun in the city or not. He looked cooked in his year with the Braves and has put up some pretty good years in SF and in Toronto (PEDs or not). I still think he's a clown and would have a hard time rooting for him but yes he'd absolutely help the Sox OF right now. Anyone could other than Sizemore, Hassan, Carp, Nava, JBJ and Gomes apparently.
I don't think TB would care if they traded Price to an AL East team or not because if/when they do trade him they're basically giving up on the year so if they get the best package from one of those teams who cares. I don't think TB is going to get nearly the package they got for James Shields or Matt Garza though because of the years of control Price has left. With that being said I highly doubt the Sox would give up any of their top prospects (Betts, Owens, Swihart, Barnes etc) for 1.5 years of Price or any other pitcher for that matter. I could see the Sox trading one of Ranuado or Allen Webster for a key piece/role player like they did with Iglesias for Peavy last year if the player had more than a half a year or control. Realistically though the only teams in the AL East with a prospect package good enough to get Price would be the Sox and Baltimore as both Toronto and the Yankees are very light in terms of advanced prospects and would probably get outbid by other teams.
There is talk of the Phillies going into fire sale mode at the deadline if not for his 2015 at 8 mil i could see the Red Sox going for him and he wouldnt cost much. I could even see the Phils chipping in some cash.
The Sox have been there with Byrd before in 2012 when he hit .270/.286/.320/.606, I can't see them going after him again. The Sox need a LHH to platoon with Gomes so Byrd wouldn't be a fit there.
Just trying to start conversation at this point and who might be available. Looking at the Phillies contracts they have to be desperate to unload some of them ( That is if Amaro still has a functioning brain i do have some doubts)
The first article is really sad, especially considering in 2012 he went to jail for selling crack. I was 1 at the time so I obviously don't remember and would never have known his story.
Chris Denorfia from SD is a name to keep in mind, although he hits right handed, the Sox really like him as a 4th OFer type that can play all 3 OF spots. Still kind of hard to see who's really available right now with so many teams still in the race. I mean the Cubs and Rays(!) are the two worst teams in their league but are still only 7.5 games out of a playoff spot. The trade market should be much clearer in about a month so teams right now are all in a holding pattern until then.
