I don't buy that. What he did goes beyond playing defensively. There's a difference between playing defensively and playing to just destroy what your opponent does and maybe capitalize on one mistake. Mourinho needing the points, went out from the get go perfectly happy with a draw. The win was gravy. That was cowardly as cowardly gets.

Basically. He threw a lineup and gameplan designed to destroy and frustrate. When you intentionally play so negatively you're not looking to win, just simply prevent the opponent from doing so.

I don't want to watch football played this way.

It is specially infuriating when Mourinho himself just recently complained when another team played this way against him, I forget who now.

He got exposed by a team who has truly mastered defending as a team without resorting to bus parking and negative play.

such a shame too... really reminds me of Marino's last game sequence vs Jags. Such a high in the games before that, beating Seattle on the road... and then he throws pick after pick against Jax. Hey, at least he went down his way... For Stevie, at least he has another season (at least) to recover. If that play doesn't happen, they likely win the cup IMO.

It is a bit ironic... Suarez.. for LFC... finally gets the team into the UEFA Champions League... only to now be looking to transfer to Barca... the two teams' brass are meeting in London tomorrow and will discuss his impending transfer. $80 plus million... or a net of approx $50m and Alexis Sanchez. There's no denying Suarez is one of the top 5 goal scorers in the world. His finishing is unreal. But no player is untouchable. And with three strikes now against Chewy Luis, I'm warming up to him leaving. If you can get Sanchez out of it, I'm warming up even more.

From a Barca fan, all I can say is while Sanchez is a very good player, he will frustrate you. He has talent but makes frustrating decisions all the time. I hope he succeeds in Liverpool if he indeed goes there, but this is just a fair warning.

I do think a change of scenery will suit him though. Here's hoping both sides end up happy with the trasaction.

Kroos to Real Madrid. He will fit in the 4-3-3 nicely. Probably means di maria is off to arsenal or something. This can let modri play deeper with xabi. Lots of rumors of James too, who I don't want solely because the team is too loaded as it is. Unless Ancelloti goes back to a 4-2-3-1 but then why get kroos too

I think they might want to drop Modric into Xabi's spot and play with Kroos and James as a trio. They have to do something about Xabi because he is nearing the liability threshold if he isn't there already.

Getting James makes no sense either, just more more case of Madrid going after the new shiny thing. Di Maria is invaluable for the way that team plays.

Yeah but xabi didn't play as bad for the club as he did in the World Cup. Once he came back from injury this year he was important. I might go with him and khedira platooning with modri. Then next year go after Vidal or pogba, if they don't this year. I want either of those two so bad.

kroos is still denying the move, i don´t get it, he gets "only" 5 million Euro a year from them, since the problem was money with an extension in munich, he makes 4 million right now, i doubt munich wouldn´t offer 5 million too, i would hate to lose him, he is here since he is 16 years old

I certainly have mixed reactions about Suarez if he leaves. When he was acquired a few years ago, LFC were 12th in the BPL table. He's part of the reason we got to the Champions' League. And you look at all the great things he accomplished while he was at LFC. Acquired for what $22.5m... now looks like he's going to be sold for close to $80m... that's not a bad flip. Tend to remember the good vs the bad over the long haul.

The key would be moving forward... how is all that money best spent? I think we've slightly overpaid for Lallana. But he's a top British talent, so that's how it goes. Not as bad as Andy Carroll  Divock Origi is an interesting player if we end up getting him, but Lille wants him back via a loan for next season. So that's a sticking point. Emre Can is an interesting looking player, who is going to challenge in the center of midfield for playing time as Luis Alberto didn't work out. Joe Allen finally showed some positive things last season after it looked like he was going to be a dud. Certainly not worried about CM with the likes of Gerrard, Hendo and Lucas as well. Lallana can fill in at CAM (10 role) and can float in either of the wide positions. Him and Sterling are similar in that respect. Coutinho is best at the 10.. I think if he splits out wide, it's a bit of a waste.. he's more direct than that. Obviously Sturridge is going to need a new partner if they go 2 at the top... Lambert was brought in for depth purposes. Although it's funny, his play style IMHO is like a Suarez. Certainly not saying he's as good as Suarez, but he's a similar type of player. Better in the air than Suarez. But IMO can do some things with the ball at his feet that makes him quality.

But the doom and gloom goes back, for me, with how is that money going to be spent? We've offered $20m for B-H (Southamption) CD 24 year old Dejan Lovren. That is a lot of money for a guy that some are lukewarm about. Oh and Southamption have supposedly rejected it. No kidding. With Agger and Sakho, we do need to add one to the mix as Skrtel is getting on (30 now). They do like Ilori though... is he ready?

Alexis Sanchez doesn't want to play for LFC... and Barca want a good $32m for him anyway. IMHO, if I'm looking at what LFC needs... I'm scouting a GK to push Mignolet for time (we're after Ochoa apparently)... I'm looking for a left back (the one rumored from Spain is taking a long time, name escapes me at the moment)...I was always higher on Luis Enrique than most... still only 28, but the guy can't stay healthy, and isn't a favorite of BR's.. another winger with pace to push out wide (Shaqiri or Cuadrado please).... and another striker or two who are both strong enough to play in the middle. I think Sturridge is best out wide... so if we go three at the top, it's Sterling, CF to be named, and Sturridge. I don't think Sanchez style is best served at that CF position... so I'm not sure he's a fit. Origi would be able to fill it, him and Sturridge would flip around all day long. Supposed interest in Huntelaar, 30 yr old, would be a stop gap only. Lets go out and poach Benteke from Aston Villa, maybe next January when he can show he's fit again... ruptured achilles nothing to smirk about...

There's obviously a lot of money left over from Suarez if you move him. As fans, we want to spend that money as fast as possible and replace a great player to keep us at the top... I'm more inclined to exercise patience though. Yes, in Brendan we trust and all that... but it's still vexing spending a lot of money on players who aren't world class at the position... We brought Luis in just after the last WC. he was one of the most exciting players at that tournament. I don't necessarily see the same type of impact from any of the forwards at this WC. Not in that age range. Just goes to show how fortunate LFC were to get him back in Jan 2011. Funny... he was on suspension at Ajax when we got him... and played 110 apps for them... he's on suspension for LFC now... and guess what? Yep, same amount of appearances... 110... kinda freaky.

As a Barca fan I am extremely happy. I understand the risks and will keep them present, however as of right now, the good far outweigh the possible bad. He is simply too good.

As for fit, IMHO he will slot seamlessly. Both Neymar and Messi are at their best as off strikers with a target man up front. Barcelona had lost that physical, technical, clinical and mobile presence up front since the Eto'o/Ibra debacle and Villa's sharp decline. He will do wonders for Barca's attack and Messi's longevity. Far and away a better fit that Alexis Sanchez ever was.

Neymar-Messi-Suarez striking partnership is the stuff of dreams.

It's really weird. Lahm is the type of player that could easily play at a high level until his late 30s, Maldini or Zanetti style. Incredibly strange he would retire so relatively young.

IIRC, Maldini retired after the 2002 World Cup, 34 years old yet continued to play until 2008 at a pretty high level.

Lahm is already an icon in Germany. He's going to remembered as a legend there. I guess he could've went for the Euro in 2016, but there's gotta be nothing like retiring a World Champion.

    So, Conte quit huh?

I'm really upset hearing this. Allegri is a disaster, IMO. I'm really worried about this group of players not rallying around Allegri and the wheels falling off.

If there's one thing Conte was, it was a motivator. His players played for him. Juve will definitely miss that. But they obviously weren't making the moves (Alexis Sanchez, etc.) that he wanted to convert to a 4-3-3 to be competitive in the CL in his mind, so off he goes.

The silver lining: Conte failed in the CL with what I believe is a powerhouse. Juventus the past 2 years had a top 5 team in Europe and one of the best midfields. And yet, they crashed out prematurely. Especially this season getting knocked out of the group stage was unacceptable.

He can disapprove of the FO all he wants about not making the moves he wants. When you have Pogba, Vidal, Marchisio, Pirlo, Asamoah, Tevez, Llorente, Vucinic, etc. you NEED to get to the QF of the CL.

Opening weekend of the BPL... seeing Man U lose is rich... Everton tied... also rich... shame Tottenham got the late goal at West Ham. They were down a man and then WH unfathomably gets one of their own tossed out. Didn't see what happened but that's really inexcusable. I"m loving NBCSN's coverage though. They do a fantastic job... and the music stays in my head... three good tunes... great weekend to be a soccer fan in the US. Every game on TV if you can get NBCSN. Best league in the world.

came close... too close. LFC were definitely lucky today to net three points from that game. Now, I do think you make your own luck at times. Put yourself in the right position to win and the lucky bounces will go your way more often than not. But Long should have headed that ball in, wide open header at the 6 and he sends it wide. I thought their link up play from back four (especially from Lovren) thru the MF to attack was lacking today. Definitely not as crisp as they were last year. Just his second game with the club, so we'll see how it progresses. Definitely need another striker though... or two.

Welp... Balotelli in for 16m pounds w/ LFC. He's only 24. Can't say we didn't need another striker (or two). Rodgers would certainly be tested with him and his persona but it's not like he hasn't been tested before. He certainly has the talent and quality in the final 3rd that LFC needed. I wonder if he plays against City on Monday...
