So some guy got it in 2008 for 8 games....Yanks do it, they are cheaters and ruining baseball and get 10 games .... Somewhere A-Rod is mad he wasn't around last night...... Thats fine, goes towards the innings management....
What's your point? Farrell didn't bring it to the umps attention during the April 10th game either. I think everyone is missing the big point that this was the 2nd time Pineda has done it in a visible manner for 2 starts in a row against the Red Sox. It's not like this was a 1 time thing and Farrell/Sox were just breaking balls here. The fact that Farrell and Sox players said that had no problem with it being used just dont make it obvious and the guy comes out with it all over his neck is the reason why they had to make the case.
AJP said after the game that he keeps pinetar on his catching gear in case his pitchers forget to have it on them when they come to the mound. Players really couldn't care less. MLB should really consider redefining the rule.
The last guy suspended for pine tar was Joel Peralta in 2012 and he got 8 games and is a RPer. I bet Pineda got 10 because Joe Torre and MLB spoke to him after the April 10th start and told him to knock it off. This isn't a Yankee thing, this is a "the guy did it twice in a span of 15 days and it was after he was told he would be watched for it" thing.
But lets not be foolish here Fink, everytime pitchers do it it beyond obvious when they do it....it is a double standard...it is reminiscent of that old unwrriten traditional baseball rules that you out of all people do not like....no pitcher is making a good attempt to hide it, Bucholz did the best, because that mixture dried clear, but even then it was clearly obvious he was doing something...
No one is missing the point...Farrell was in a catch 22 there, he'd be scrutinized for taking the high road or for saying something. Pineada is a dope, plain and simple. There are now pictures of his hands surfacing from spring training with pinetar on them. I wouldnt be surprised if he has done it his whole career.
I think it has more to do with the fact that this is the 2nd time in a row Pineda has done it against the same team and being so blatant about it that matters here. I don't believe a pitcher was ever as obvious as putting pine tar on his neck.
Farrell should dont nothing and if the ump was tipped off by say a media member or a fan in the crowd in between innings so be it...... After the game, Farrell could have easily pulled a LaRussa and said something in the post game about how the next time is so obvious he will have to do something, or say nothing at all because it was A) so clearly obvious MP was tarred up and B) the media would have been all over MP and Joe after the game again that it would have forced the team to deal with it and it would have been the Joe's responsibility to put an end to it and he would have. Instead Farrell choose to dime out. It is what it is.... http://www.m*******sports.com/2014/04/gif-john-farrell-michael-pineda.html ^^
All do respect, and this post has nothing to do with you because you obviously get it, but I absolutely think people are missing the point that this was the 2nd time being done in a blatant manner. The Sox warned him after the April 10th and before last night's game that if you're going to do it be discreet about it, it's because it was so obvious with it being on the neck that it forced the Sox to blow the whistle on him. Majority of people I've heard ranting and raving either on the radio or comments from news stories about it fail to acknowledge the fact that this is the 2nd time and he got a free pass the first time. Which is why I question FinYank's post about LaRussa and the WS.
Yank, I'm usually on your side here, but Ferrell had no choice, his players saw it, cashman was getting calls about not, the red Sox announcers saw it. If he played dumb he would have been just as idiotic as pineada was.
So you want umps to listen to fans or media members during the game now? Come on now. Farrell did pull a LaRussa in the April 10th start, you can't ignore it a 2nd time. That's the whole point and the reason Farrell came out. If he didn't he would have been killed for letting it go a 2nd time.
Agreed. That tweet says it all, if it was hidden in his glove or on his belt like most pitcher do it wouldn't have been an issue. Because it's on his neck for the whole world to see you have to do something about it.
Yeah I saw that after I posted. What I really hate is people who are uniformed and popping off at the mouth about pineada being a cheater, whenmore than half the pitchers in the league use it.
You guys equally aren't getting the point that everytime a pitcher does it it isn't discreet, like ever. So you either let it go and let the process play out or you drop a dime like Farrell, and Johnson did. Thats my view agree to disagree I guess...I still love ya......
lol...... dude what Peralta did was hidden, the only way Johnson knew Peralta had that in his glove is because JP played for Davey...... this isnt hidden..... just like this isnt hidden..... just like this isnt hidden.... just like this isnt hidden..... to say it is ok to do it if you hide it well enough no matter how many time is naive.....come on....managers choose to dime or they don't, at least teams know they have to play straight up against the Sox going forward or there is a shot Farrell may drop one on them....
Sorry never going to understand how its not cheating unless its "obvious" when "obvious" is subjective. Clay got busted last year and wasnt punished and it was "obvious" to me when he kept going to his forearm over and over and over again. He admits to it and says its for grip and its fine. Pineda was doing it for grip. The umps didnt eject him for scuffing the balls. Its either legal or it isnt.
Joe Maddon said he is all for legalizing pine tar but said they should start in Colorado and Seattle first? What does that mean? Why Seattle?
My guess either something to do with the weather in both areas or weed being legal there? That was my guess because he mentioned Colorado first but have no clue if its legal in Washington. Could just be an attempt at being funny because it is Grandpa Joe after all so who knows.
Will be nice to see the full Sox line up for the 1st time all year, hopefully they don't have to have another position player pitch tonight again. They have been pretty freaking embarassing so far this year with no heart.
Here's to Holt being gone Kid impressed me so far this year... Also that hand transfer rule is asinine......
He certainly has a better bat than Herrera but Herrera is probably the better defensive player. And yes thankfully it's gone. Such a stupid rule to begin with.
interesting articles on the the rise of TJ's...... http://espn.go.com/blog/stephania-bell/post/_/id/2426/the-rise-in-tommy-john-surgeries http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/10832585/tommy-john-stunned-rash-pitchers-needing-surgery-season http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/10831700/is-mlb-midst-tommy-john-epidemic
MLB just changed the ruling on it this afternoon so the runners aren't automatically safe anymore if the infielder drops the ball on his way to transferring it to his throwing hand. http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/1...s-complete-control-ball-double-play-forceouts
Jorge Campos the throw in on the Pineda deal, who has/d a bright future had TJ the other day...... Sox are healthy again, I'd expect them to go on a run soon, although they need to get something from the leadoff spot...so far it is a glaring weakness....
Campos has had a lot of injuries since the trade no? Looking at his BR page he barely pitched in 2012. I think this was unfortunately expected sooner or later. As far as the Sox, I think having Victorino back helps a lot as the top of the order should be more consistent with Pedroia, Victorino, Ortiz and Napoli as the top 4 in the order instead of trying to mix and match with guys like Nava, Sizemore and Gomes. Big two weeks for the Sox as they have TB and Oakland coming to town before they head off to Minnesota and Texas. They need to start winning series and games at home. There are also rumors starting to go around that Xander Bogaerts would be interested in signing a long term deal with the Red Sox. Very interesting indeed, of course he has Boras as his agent so it's probably highly doubt full it would happen but why not throw some numbers around and see.
I mean Boras works for XB, so if XB says get it done I would think he has too....unless SB can convince him otherwise...but yeah there is no hard in buying out his arbit years and tacking on a year of FA as well.....money well spent IMO....the others I would wait one... Tomorrow the Mariners of Seattle come to town....this will be fun....Cano is going to park one, you know he is going to....
Yeah the contract talks should be interesting for sure. I think you'd probably have to use the Starlin Castro extension and Elvis Andrus one as reference points. Castro got 60 for 7 years with an option for the 8th year that could bring it to 76 and Andrus got an 8 year 118 million dollar deal. So if the Red Sox truly think Bogaerts is going to be a superstar why not offer him a 10 year 100 million dollar deal, maybe add on 2 player/team options that could bring the thing up to 130 or 140 million and also add in bonuses etc? That way they lock him up until his age 32 season and paying him 10 million a year won't hurt in terms of cap space, plus even if Scott Boras is your agent it will be hard for a 21 year old kid to pass up 100 million guaranteed. But I could see Boras pushing to get him to be a FA at 28 or 29 to get another big pay day. Yeah can't wait for Seattle to come in. Will be very interesting to hear if the Yankee announcers complain about Cano taking more money to go to Seattle or if they bash him at all. Again something like this, a superstar player leaving the Yankees in his prime for more money, has never happened before.
I would be surprised if they bash him, everybody is entitled to take the money. I think they may say you have to wonder if it is the right move like we all think. But bashing him? Like negatively about him or his character? I doubt it...
You see the thing on Letterman where they put a big picture of him in Central Park? In all seriousness they should, the guy won a ring here, didn't always hustle but wasnt a cancer in the clubhouse.....just get over it...
I didn't see it but heard it was good. The hustle thing is a joke to me. I mean did the guy run out every single ground ball? No. Did the guy sometimes seem to lose focus for a play or two on defense? Yes. But from 2007 until 2013 the guy played 160, 159, 161, 160, 159, 161, and 160 games for the team. He never took a day off and put up a career stat line of .309/.355/.502/.858 for a 2nd baseman with 204 home runs in 9 seasons. And you know Michael Kay, John Sterling and Waldman will bring up the hustle stuff multiple times tonight. Like you said there was never any public problems with him and the clubhouse and the only knock on him so when, early in his career, he was called out for maybe partying too much with Melky Cabrera. Which, a certain Yankee captain was also called out early in his career for partying too much by the Yankee owner and even made a commercial about it. Bottom line is the guy was a very very good player for that team.
Good article on my new man crush, Mookie Betts and how he could potentially be the Red Sox version of Ben Zobrist: http://www.weei.com/sports/boston/b...hy-mookie-betts-position-question-really-answ
I mean absolutely he was the arguably (depending on who you talk to) the best 2nd baseman in that time period....but from the Yankees POV the hustle thing was a concern and for that money who's to say he doesn't do it even moreso. He is paid at that point he basically got rewarded for doing that, it only reinforces his mentality. Again if you are sinking 24M over 10 years to a guy at the age of 30, there (at least in my mind) shouldn't be any red flags. Hey maybe they learned their lesson after A-Rod. If they made mention of partying to much early on but it wasn't some huge story....and it isn't comparable to Jeter, not even close, because while Jeter was making MLB highlight reel plays you will see in ad spots for MLB years from now having a direct hand in winning championships at age 22, Cano was slashed .136/.130/.136 in his only WS apperance in his prime at age 26. And yes it does matter how you perform, party all you want, but the play on the field better be up to par, it is just the way it is, right or wrong.... If I was there tonight, I would give him a hand, I enjoyed RC while he was here. I just wish he took a little less (years wise) because this lineup would be a mother if he was the number 3 regardless of his playoff futility....you dont give up on a guy with his talent I put him up in a crucial spot everytime at some point he gotta come through...
I don't agree that Cano not always running out rountine ground balls was a concern for the Yankees moving forward. It wasn't a big deal then and still isn't. That stuff is just all media spin. My only point about the only negative of Cano outside of playing was that he partied maybe too much earlier in his career but once the Yankees got rid of Melky, he seemed to straight out or at least the party talk died down. Just compared it to Jeter earlier in his career how he too was also knocked for it but seemed to straight it out.
dude Jeter STILL parties more than Cano hahahaha here is that video in case you wanted to see it....
