No, you gave up a trade exception that was set to expire and a second rounder for a garbage player and a potential prospect, and a first rounder. I thought that was a win-win deal, personally. Philly cleared space for Elton Brand, and the T-Wolves got a player in Carney who might pan out, and a future #1, and gave up almost nothing.
You know, I like Duke, but I'm starting to wonder. Boozer stabs a blind guy in the back, then Brand does this. And of course, JJ Redick's been stealing money from the moment he entered the league.
Baron Davis got burned so badly. And yeah, the Warriors sure moved quickly. I guess as soon as they heard Brand was going to sign with Philly, they threw the cash at Maggette to steal him from San Antonio. Simple case of a player opting for a big contract over playing for the chance at an actual title. It happens every summer, unfortunately.
Maggette for 5 years and $50M. That's a CLASSIC panic move by the Warriors. The only other team with any intention of offering more than the $6M mid level exception just forked over their cap space for Elton Brand. So, bidding against a bunch of teams offering MLE contracts, the Warriors decide to pay $10M a year, when a deal starting at $7M almost certainly would have gotten it done. Otis Smith would be proud.
KiNG, please call your service provider. Rick Reilly has stolen your login info. If there are 10 players in the NBA who would take the Spurs' mid level exception over 5 years and $50M from the Warriors, I'd be amazed.
I think he's arguably worth it, but it was at least $10M more than they had to pay to get him. It's the same thing Orlando did with Rashard Lewis. No other offer was competitive, so rather than save some of that money and maybe put it to good use elsewhere, they just decided to blast everyone else out of the water, rather than be a little patient and realize that no one was going to offer more. What, he was going to suddenly kiss and make up with the Clippers, so he could be the subject of trade rumors for the next five years and play for a coach who hates him? The Grizzlies and Bobcats were going to get off their asses and spend money? Everyone else was throwing a $6M MLE at him. Beat that by a million or so, and he's yours! I can't believe how worked up I'm getting over this. I don't even care about the damn Warriors.
I'm sorry, but a 28-year old who preaches how badly he wants to win signing with a team going absolutely nowhere is an idiot in his own right. I don't care about the other players in the league; Corey Maggette is an idiot. What does he need the extra money for? He's been earning millions in this league since 1999. And if I'm Golden State, a team currently built for the future with Davis gone and Ellis/Biedrins seemingly the players to build around, I'm throwing the cash at Josh Smith and daring Atlanta to match. Not 28-year old injury prone Corey Maggette. Lateral move. Dumb for both sides.
bye bye keyon dooling with the pietrus signing i guess. i wonder if we now trade jj reddick for something
Ah, my bad. Even worse. Miami wasn't even an option with our cap situation for 2008. If we had cap space, however, I think Brand would have favored Miami. Not that it matters... I believe Section called Brand a lock for 2009 if he made it onto the market, with Marion expiring.
Warriors fans are pissed about the Maggette move. If you're in the need of a laugh, head over to the Warriors board on RealGM.
Wrong guy dude. I said that Elton Brand was an absolute LOCK to the 100th power if he opted in this year and made the market in 2009. I never said anything about maggette except that I like him as a player and would have targeted him with the mid-level. and he didn't "almost" sign in the past.... HE SIGNED WITH THE HEAT AND THE CLIPPERS MATCHED as a Restricted FA.
Damn man, Brand Maggette, I expected to leave if offered ten million a year. When? The last time he was on the market, the Jazz offered up a six year, $42 million dollar deal and it was matched by the Clippers. You may be right but I don't remember it happening.
Honestly, I would be surprised to see him go away from the Clippers offer. I'm not a Clippers fan but Brand leaving bothers the hell out of me for some reason.
Same year Miami signed Lamar Odom from L.A. They signed Brand to a tender and the Clippers matched, leaving them no money to re-sign Odom.
Oh Brand? I thought we were talking about Maggette. I apologize. Someone confused me when they stated Maggette and then Brand.
Indeed. And they suck royally. Agreed. I thought Brand would be the last person to do something like this. I have just lost all respect for him. I'm thinking this isn't looking good for Coach K's mantras. Oh he is. Major douchebag just like fellow Dukie Boozer. Certainly hopes he never sniffs past the 2nd round ever and gets doomed to be the next Shareef Abdur-Rahim. I expect Clipper fans (if they still show up) to boo him as Cavs fans did for Boozer.
Compared to players like KG, and Ray Allen, and other players who werent in it just for a paycheck, yes, I think they are very mediocre. I for one didnt want Brand in a Miami jersey anyways. I dont like his style. I'm more for the rugged bangers in the paint, then the finesse players like Brand.
I think hes payed his dues with a garbage franchise in the clippers for long enough. Time for him move closer to home.
If I was Davis I would be royally pissed. Maggette and Brand are out of LA leaving him in a worse situation then he was in in GS.
I dunno about that. I'd take a crew of Baron and Kaman over Iguodala and Dalembert even if they're in the East.
I wouldn't say he's mediocre. You may not be a fan of his game but you can't deny the talent he has and numbers he puts up. He averages 20 and 10 for his career. The Clippers could have offered up to $85 milliion to Brand but they didn't. The Sixers took advantage of that and offered him $82 million and a spot in the playoffs. As we all know the East is weak and this made the Sixers so much better. As for the Clippers, they're not sniffing the playoffs right now with Brand gone. They were no more than a seventh seed with Brand. Brand also loves the East coast and wanted to play there according to sources close to him. Maggette isn't mediocre but he was in it for the paycheck as we can all tell. He whined about not winning and then goes to GS. He'll get $4.2 million more a year than what SA offered him. I personally don't think it was worth the raise but its his decision.
I'd take that crew too but there's a better chance to come to the Finals in the East which I think was a big reason in his decision.
I think he said they weren't mediocre talent but made decisions over money and stuff that land them on mediocre or soon to be mediocre teams. If Sixers become even worse than the Bulls team Brand was on, that would be poetic justice.
From what I've heard, it's his little tiff over the Clips FO for putting out a "take it or leave it" message when GS upped to $90 mil. That kind of prima donna attitude only makes my opinion of Brand even lower.
