What a way to blow the game in the bottom of the 11th. Colorado was simply handed this game; took zero skill.
The Marlins need to look at the closer role after last night and the OTHER nights and make a decision. If they are going to make a run at the playoffs, they need someone they can trust. This guy walks the first batter almost every single time he comes up.
It was 13-4 Marlins up a couple innings ago.....Rocks just made it 13-10 in 6th inning....no lead is safe at Coors.
My top 5 Marlins prospects as of July 5th, 2008. 1. P. Christopher Volstad - Age 21- AA Carolina - 3.36 ERA, 1.27 WHIP, 91 IP, 30 BB's, 57 K's Chris is having a solid consistent year after a rough FSL campaign in 2007. Expect him to be called up to the show if our pitching continues to be an issue. 2. OF. Cameron Maybin - Age 21- AA Carolina- .265 BA, .357 OBP, .461 SLG%, .818 OPS, 12 HRs Cameron has had slight contact issues this season, but its encouraging that he is still getting on base at an exceptional rate. Its not out of the realm of possibility that Cam will get a shot before September call-ups. 3. OF. Michael Stanton - Age 18 - A Greensboro - .283 BA, .341OBP, .569 SLG%, .910 OPS, 21 HRs Michael is absolutely putting up a power hitting clinic in Greensboro. A 20 homer season is extremely impressive by any minor leaguer, but is practically unheard of by an 18 year old, and Mike has 21 in JULY! Now, he strikes out quite a bit, but he has plenty of time to improve. For camparisons sake, Miguel Cabrera's numbers in A ball as an 18 year old were: .268 BA, .328 OBP, .382 SLG%, .710 OPS, and 12 HRs. 4. OF. John Raynor - Age 24 - AA Carolina - .299 BA, .393 OBP, .448 SLG%, .841 OPS, 6 HRs Raynor has once again pieced together another solid season. Hitting, walking and doing everything else asked of him. Entering the 2009 season, the Marlins seem to have a bit of a log jam in the outfield. A possible solution could be trading Jacobs, moving Willingham to first, and letting Raynor-Cameron-Hermida fill out the outfield. 2B. Chris Coghlan - Age 23 - AA Carolina - .299 BA, .364 OBP, .429 SLG%, 5 HRs Coghlan, like Volstad, struggled in his breif FSL season last year after an impressive campaign in Greensboro. However, he has righted his ship. Coghlan presents another problem for the FO next year, as he is blocked by Uggla. a possible solution being suggested is moving Uggla to third base and letting Coghlan take over at second, but I'm not sure Uggla can handle the hot corner and Coghlan already has 15 errors on the year.
"Imploded" is one way to put it. I'd put it more along the lines of "went supernova." Great list, Mainge. Thanks for that.
uggla confirmed for homerun derby.....saw it scroll on the bottom during 'baseball tonight'!!!! gunna be so fun seeing danny and hanley in the allstar game! I am pumped!!!
lol I think you mean hanley....hes a first time allstar this year.....danny was a allstar his rookie year in 2006.... also off topic....josh joshnson is starting thursday vs LA....He was disgusting during his last rehab start pitching 8 shut out innings!!! volstad will start friday....hendrickson and tucker moved to bullpen
By the way, this is the guy that may be the reason Uggla never gets the big contract with the Marlins, but is signed after either a trade or Free Agency. They like him better at 2nd than Uggla. This will be worthy of watching. If he blossoms the 2nd half this year, the FO has some thinking to do.
Nope, I'm talking about Uggla. He never gets any credit or notice. If the Marlins happen to be talked about, you hear about Hanley and you hear about the bullpen getting overworked, and that's it. You don't hear about Uggla, or Jacobs, or Cantu, or anyone else.
And Uggla WAS an All Star in 2006, this is his 2nd appearance. Cantu is not really anything special with the bat, and is the same or worse than Cabrera at 3rd. Jacobs ? Do you watch the Marlins ? Are you serious ? He is the worst 1st baseman in all of baseball, no question about it. Look at the stats. He is also slow, and his range is, well, laughable at the MLB level. His strikouts, especially with RISP is atrocious. Just because a guy has some HR's doesn't make him worthy of national attn. Jake is a great guy, a nice guy, but do I want him gone in a trade ? ASAP please !!!!
gotta agree with everything here.....EXCEPT Cantu has been a great compliment at third base.....and with mcpherson lighting it up in AAA we have a overload of infielders.....maybe get cantu to 1st (get rid of jake for you) and put dallas at third.... cantu has better all around numbers than cabrera this season ( in a better pitching national league) he has mde us forget about miggy...for now at least....cantu should be considered for comeback player of the year (if he continues to stay hot)
Dallas has 31 dingers, but, and its a BIG but, he has 97 K's in just 251 AB's. Can we afford more K's than we already have on this team ? There is no assurance his HR's will translate to the MLB level, but we do know those K's could grow even more. McPherson does have a 1.130 OPS, but those K's worry me. His .311 average is pretty darn enticing.
Marlins need to worry about starting pitching and fielding. Marlins are worst in the Majors in fielding percentage. They also can't get starting pitchers deep into ball games which is killing RP
Strikeouts are just another form of outs. Their is no statistical evidence that the number of strikeouts directly effect a teams total run output. Dallas plays in the hitter friendly PCL which inflates his stats. Especially in Albequerque, which is a high altitude park similiar to Coors. His average, and OPS all drop significantly when playing away. I think its safe to assume that he wouldnt come close to that pace at the MLB level. And if your hell bent on trading Jake, than I think you move Willingham to first and Gonzalez to LF.
Yes, Jacobs. We could do better, but IMO we could do worse. There are other positions that need addressing besides 1B. And if he's as bad as you say, no one will take him, so we're stuck with him. I like Jacobs because when he's on game, he produces pretty nicely. He's a nice guy on top of that. I can't bring myself to say he's a problem. I like him. There's a long list of things I'd change about this team before getting a new first baseman.
well a good way to start the san diego series....cantu came through again and hit his 16th bomb.... and nalasco continued being lights out.....dudes having an allstar season so far!!!!
IF the Marlins could add a stud SP to the rotation as well as a real closer and some more depth they will be serious contenders. Pitching is killing them. I like Andrew Miller though.
damn right!!!! can't wait for the game tonight.....i love the marlins, always have......i can't wait to watch this team prosper!!!!!
Logan Kensing was sent down to the minors to make room for Josh Johnson, while Mark Hendrickson moves to the bullpen. Johnson starts tonight. The pitching rotation now consists of Olsen, Nolasco, Volstad, Miller, Johnson.
looks better and better everytime i look at it.....god i hope jj can give us a 7 or 8 inning 1 or 2 run game tonight!!!
I really hope JJ can pitch great. Hopefully he can take a lot of pressure off the bullpen. I wonder if the Marlins make a deal at the deadline. No big names but a roleplayer would be nice
they need to land a stud pitcher this offseason... no way they make it far in the playoffs (if they get there) with that rotation.
jj with a great start so far......congrats to john baker...first big league hit is a homerun.....dream come true!!!!
