    Per Rotoworld:

Mark Teixeira told Daniel Barbarisi of the Wall Street Journal that he expects to feel some tightness in his surgically-repaired wrist until at least June and possibly through the whole season.

Who would be the back up 1B if Teixeira isn't ready for the start of the season or misses some time during the season? Kelly Johnson?

Kelly Johnson in theory. But I think it will end up being someone not on the 40 man at the moment. I was hoping they'd sign my boy Jeff baker, but they don't like his defense at 3rd and he only really hits lefties.

Eh even if they signed him they can't have him playing 1B if Teixeira is out. I'm assuming they will sign a Casey Kotchman/Lyle Overbay (although Overbay just signed with MIL) type of player on a minor league deal just in case.

    Strawberry on ARod: http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york/yankees/post/_/id/68646/straw-on-a-rod-hall-of-fame-hypocrites

Can you imagine how many home runs Straw would have hit if they had steroids when he played?! I love his honesty. I've always liked Strawberry, even when he was a Met.

Ummmm Strawberry did play when guys were using steroids, so I'm not sure what he's talking about there.

But he is right that they are hypocrites. After all, like he said, most if not all of the players from the 60s or so on used greenies, which are not illegal in the MLB.

I'd be surprised if they put Beltran or Soriano there as they have never played 1B before and you don't want to risk injury to those guys, especially Beltran. Maybe McCann for a couple of games or so, since it would keep his bat in the line up and it could possibly be his position once he moves off catcher but even so it weakens the catching position. Bottom line is they need and better sign a few more 1B FAs.

I think this news just shows you again for at least the 2nd straight year the Yankees have a lack of depth on the 40 man roster and in the minors.

Not shocking but it's going to be weird as hell not seeing him play. Kinda of sucky really.

Jeter's final regular season game will be on September 28th at Fenway Park. Sure as hell beats playing in Houston. Although like Rivera, if the Yankees are out of the race I wonder if he'll hang it up after his last YS game which would be on September 25th vs. the Orioles.

The money at this point has to be under 10M on a 1 year deal, draft pick be damned because it is what a 2-3rd rounder IF that to give up.....

At the end of the year JJ Hardy and Hanley are free agents if they dont sign extensions, not ideal but at least there are options other than Drew....The Red Sox dont want him per se, the Mets will only do at their price.....he has no leverage....

Signing Drew to a 1 year deal would be stupid with losing a draft pick. It would/should be a multi-year deal maybe 2 years or so as the team would use Drew to bridge the gap to their next SS whoever that is. I think Drew would be a good fit for YS and wouldn't cost as much as Hanley or Hardy would in terms of years or dollars.

I am saying a one year contract Fink because thats what Boras is holding out for 3 with a 1 yr opt out clause....

I dont think they care about money anymore unfortunately, they would sign Hanley in a minute (interesting battle with the Sox should they trade Middlebrooks and slide XB over) if he should become available....

Boras/Drew have zero leverage at this point in the "off season". If any team offered Drew a multi-year deal at fair market value (probably anything over 7 or 8 million a year) he'd sign it.

As far as Hanley goes, even if he becomes a FA though I think LAD will sign him to an extension, there's a less than a 0% chance that the Sox go after a 31 year old player, who's a poor defender at already SS, that's going to want 5 plus years and over 15 million per year. Especially when they have a player in Bogaerts might be a better all around player than Hanley in 2015 and beyond.

Even if Middlebrooks is the worst MLB player in 2014, the Sox will look elsewhere for 2015, and they may already have their replacement 3B in the minors in Cecchini depending on how he does in 2014.

I think the days when the Sox and Yankees are in a big money FA bidding war are over for awhile anyway.

Worst comes to worst the trade is a push, I like out upside with Pineda then monteros upside with Seattle.

Right now it looks like the ultimate bust for both teams. I'm not sure who out I'd say could possibly rebound and turn back into their old self. Its been 2 years since either was good, Montero just stopped hitting and got out of shape and Pineda's case had major shoulder surgery. Kind of hard to believe just how far both guys have fallen off.

I wouldn't say major bust for the Yankees yet, how can you say that? Can we let Pineda get on the mound first? In the event he retires and nevers pitches a pitch then yes I would say bust. Seattle gave Jesus a legit shot and he blew it bad and now they are literally talking about releasing Montero......

Even if Pineda makes it though this year 50IP at a 4ERA, it is still more positive than JM....

Pineda had surgery. That's not falling off that's being injured. Montero definitely fell off though. I wouldn't write him off just yet but he's gotta find his game again and soon

Because he's pitched a grand total of 0 MLB innings and he's had major shoulder surgery that cost him 2 years of service time already. How is that not a major bust right now? That's not to say Pineda can't be of value to the Yankees moving forward but right now he's absolutely been a bust for the team.

With having surgery there's the great unknown of what kind of pitcher he'll be moving forward. We have no idea if he'll be back to his old 2011 self or if he'll be a completely different pitcher, and whether that's good or bad.

I agree about Montero, he's still too young to write him off as he's only 23 years old. Ditto for Pineda, although that surgery would worry me.

They traded for him knowing that he could have another shoulder surgery.....but as of right now you cant say it is a bust....you have to see it play out to the end...

Here is an example IMO the Granderson/Jackson trade now that it is over and Granderson is off the team is a bust for the Yankees.....Jesus (albeit prob not) could come back this year and mash....

Mind you he is just entering his first arbitration eligible season so they have him under control for a few more years...

You absolutely can say it's a bust. How can you not? There's no way anyone can justify it not being a bust right now. Injuries happen, you can't use that as an excuse.

The Yankees were expecting him to be in their rotation the last 2 years and he's hasn't pitched a single MLB inning. How is that not a bust? Just because the guy got injured doesn't mean so far it hasn't been a bad trade. The Yankees lost 2 years of his service time with 0 output from him.

At this point in time the trade has been a bust for both teams. Of course, like you state, there is still plenty of time left for either player to turn it around but right now it was a bad trade for both teams.

Yeah I dont judge trades, picks or FA signings until its done....In any sports....difference of opinion I guess.....Again IF Pineda goes on and pitches for the next few years at an above avg clip, nobody is going to care about the past 2 years...

Because then you start sounding like the people questioning JBJ.....

There's a big difference between Pineda or Montero than there is with JBJ. But you know this.

But I do think it's far to at least question trades or FA signings a few years into the deals while also using the old "a lot can happen in the future" line and it not being a cop-out.

I mean everybody goes into a trade wanting to win it absolutely. But the fact of the matter is rarely are there trades (especially in baseball) when it is win-win....going into this one it looked like it could have been, however with JM not performing and Pineda sidelined who kows what can happen.

However when you look at it, the Yankees still benefit from MP not hitting Arb until 2015, young and cost controlled with potential to be playing this year. It literally cost them NOTHING. They basically got 2 free years of rehab on him....Now admittedly if he doesn't play this year, then I will start to think it was a bust......

But on the flip side one could argue if you didn't trade Montero, you could have gotten 2 years of his production for literally no cost either plus an extra year of control too. One could also argue that if the Yankees didn't trade Montero for Pineda, they might have been able to flip Montero off to another team for another player(s) or he would have made their 2012 and/or 2013 team better. A lot of variables go into these things.

I agree....but we are here with this trade, which at the time wasn't bad at all, because as you remember here you have JM at that time and now, many considered him not a full time catcher but more of a DH/1B.....so to flip him for Pineda who had just come off a very good year at the age of 21 it was the right gamble....then injuries happened, thems the brakes as they say....

Dont forget Jose Campos too, who is 21 now and had a good year last year in Single A....hopefully he still progresses....

You didn't see Montero's comments earlier this week when he was asked what he did in the offseason? Montero's response was:

“I gained a lot of weight in my country,” said Montero. “So, now, I’m on a program to lose weight. I’m working really hard to get my weight back. I wasn’t doing nothing (after finishing winter ball), just eating.”

    http://hardballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/02/12/jesus-montero-is-not-in-the-best-shape-of-his-life/

Kind of crazy to see wasted talent. So yeah, you could say Montero's days in Seattle are probably numbered. Watch him get cut by Seattle and TB or Oakland picks him up as their DH and he turns into a power house again.

Teixeira is going to miss at leas the first week of ST games due to his wrist:

    http://hardballtalk.nbcsports.com/2...miss-at-least-the-first-week-of-spring-games/

He hasn't had any setbacks or pain but the wrist is still tight. I'm still surprised the Yankees haven't bring in a Casey Kotchman type as insurance just in case. Then again I've been questioning the Yankees and their roster depth for the past 2 or 3 years now.

The trade coupled with the lack of playing time and high expectation, demoralized him. I'm kind of hoping the Yankees grab him back on the cheap.

And speaking of FATASTIC... Check out Phil Hughes. A guy with mechanic problems who spent time on the DL with a bulging disc should not be carrying that much weight.
