I think it may have got tossed out during my move. If it didn't I'm not sure which box it would be in, so that may force my hand anyways. :/
Welp… if you order now from Amazon you can still get Saturday delivery of your SSD and Windows 8.1 license.
So Samsung 840 Evo or Pro? Nevermind: Best Buy only has the Evo in stock in the 250GB range. I'd have gone with amazon (maybe I still should given their returns seem more comprehensive), but they charge tax in TX, and I'd have to pay extra to get it delivered on Saturday. Windows 8.1 & 840 Evo in stock at nearest Best Buy.
Try to nab the 840 Pro 256GB if you can. It has the same features as the Evo, including RAPID mode, but it's a little faster. If not, the Evo is still excellent. You can't go wrong with either one.
if you can download this key finder to a flash drive somehow and in the few minutes that you have before it BSOD and run it, you can get your windows key, download windows 7 from another pc and bam. you saved yourself the money. http://download.cnet.com/Product-Key-Finder/3000-2094_4-10694022.html
Got Windows 8.1 installed. Man, I like the "dash". Obviously it isn't for everything, but now that I have a basic idea of how it works, I like it quite a bit. And I finally get GREAT use out of the Windows key on my keyboard!! I also found out (as I had forgot over the past two years) while installing my new SSD that I had the old one installed into one of my MOBOs 3GB/s ports as opposed to my 6GB/s ports. I previously had two 2TB drives that I store blu-ray backups and games on in the 6GB/s sata ports (they're 6GB drives). Do I have any chance of salvaging what was on these drives, or will plugging them in force me to reformat them? Additionally, did you say I could try and reformat my old SSD in order to still use it (from scratch obviously)?
Windows 8 and 8.1 get a bum rap, and I say that as a fervent Apple/Mac user. 8 and 8.1 also take better advantage of SSDs than 7, though you'll want to read this and probably follow its directions just to be safe. Changing SATA ports does not require you to reformat the drives. The drives are still readable, it's just that your 2 TB drives will be read at 3 Gb/s instead of 6 Gb/s… which is fine, you won't see a difference, hard drives access data too slowly to saturate 3Gb/s bandwidth. You WILL see an improvement in your SSD by plugging it in to the 6Gb/s port, however, because the SSD can use almost all of that additional transfer bandwidth effectively. If you keep your old SSD, plug it in to a spare 6Gb/s port if you can, otherwise put it on a 3Gb/s port. You definitely want your boot drive on 6Gb/s. Yes, you can plug it in as a slave drive. Just go into the BIOS and make sure to specify that you're booting off the new SSD, not the old one. Once you pull your data off it, use secure erase to wipe everything and reset it back to factory default data condition. You can then use it as a secondary drive, albeit one that you'll want to keep important files away from.
I know that, I just didn't know if it would still see all the data stored there in the HDDs when I plug them back in. I've never tried, this was the first PC I built myself and first one I had a problem with the boot drive.
You have to to use WMC in order to use Mediabrowser Classic which is what I had set up for all my movies/tv shows. It looks like it is up to Mediabrowser 3 though which can stream over a browser, and Mediabrowser Theater is in beta and you won't need WMC for that; but no release date yet.
That makes sense, then. Well, might be time to switch to Plex or some other library, or to call Microsoft and see if they'll comp you.
Nah, I'll try out the browser client for now and see how it works, and hopefully it's a good hold over until they're done with the standalone client. It doesn't much matter until I get the rest of my home theater setup anyways, I only have the front soundstage hooked up. Edit: I think I'm getting better D/L speeds at my new place (though my connection speed is supposed to be the same), as Steam games are up around 6.6MB/s. I don't think I ever got over 5 at my old house, and that was on a hardline. I bet if I got off wi-fi I could even get faster.
less people on the trunk heading to your place maybe? i live in a 276 unit highrise and my speeds suffer during peak times.
i upgraded to windows 8 and then to 8.1 because of this thread. and the fact that Lmeister doesn't like it.
