Serious question...have you seen Weston Richburg playing guard? I know I made the case for Schwenke to be a guard last year but that was in large part because I'd seen him play it.
Maybe that with Trai Turner at Guard, but not Wesley Johnson imo, I see him as a LT, not OG, more of a finesse player and about 290 lbs. Good feet and quicks, but I don't see him as a power player who'd be good for a Guard in the NFL.
Hhmmm.....I wonder how much of a discount the brothers would give negotiating a deal for both of them to stay.
Question for the resident NCAA scouts/personnel guys here: Assuming one of the top tackles is available when we pick in the first round, which one would be best suited for the zone blocking scheme we use (assuming we continue to use that same blocking scheme)?
I think Billy Turner will be the best available ZB OT. But I do not think ZB OT is necessarily what we need. We need a great all around OT. I think Zack Martin maybe the best available OT where we pick. I expect Matthews and Robinson to go before #19. One of Kouandjio, Martin, Moses, and Lewan should be available at 19. All should fit well at RT, with Albert being signed for LT.
Why not Lewan? And, why not Lewan at LT? Just asking. One thing I've heard/read about him is that he has a bit of a mean streak, which I think is a good quality for an O-lineman to have. But, I have no real clue when it comes to evaluating these prospects. Especially the linemen. Definitely looking forward to the combine next month though.
I don't consider Lewan an "offensive" weapon lineman. I think Turner is a weapon in space. Lewan is more of a kick and slide, protect, "defensive" OL, if not solely that. If the gurus get a chance, check out Dan France of Michigan State who played guard, 6-6, 315, ranked 600th+, but plays really well for Zb scheme. I watched Nebraska and tOSU games.
Incidentally...Greg I'm going to need you to tell me about Ross Cockrell. That son of a bytch is impressing the hell out of me the way he's handling Mike Evans and Kelvin Benjamin.
Thanks for the abbreviation. France is #59, and Treadwell is a senior too, LG #63, Fonoti RT #51 will prbly be kicked inside too if gets a chance.
BTW TGFD, if CK values your opinion, than so do I. I've heard that Martin, while he doesn't have the ideal measurements for OT (i.e., shorter than ideal arm length), compared to Matt Light of NE. Do see any similarities? Also, some say he might be better suited to play guard at the NFL level. What are your thoughts? Could he play LT for us?
Aight, I'm slogging through SJB and once I get through I'll move onto Cockrell. Looks like I'm able to find all of Duke's games, so no problems there. I'll post both SJB and Cockrell in here when I'm done, since I know both are fan favorites.

BTW, anyone know the estimate on compensation picks for us this year? I've never been clear on how it works. Will we get some for Long and Smith?
Trying to get a better handle on Troy Niklas' speed. Clearly outruns Temple LB Blaze Caponegro (6-1, 225) after the catch on the long TD against Temple. However clearly DB Tavon Young (5-10, 160) is catching up to Niklas, though they flatten out. There are no times on file for Caponegro but Young has a 4.54 on file. On a catch against Purdue, gets into a straight up running situation with LB Sean Robinson (6-3, 240) and Robinson can't keep up. Robinson has a 4.78 on file. I'm thinking he'll run in the mid to low 4.7's but not totally sure.
Eddie Lackey snubbed from the Combine. I don't understand this AT ALL. The guy runs in the 4.5's and any idiot can see that on tape. He's 1st Team All Big-12 this year, was 2nd Team All Big-12 last year. In two seasons (26 games) he's racked up 212 tackles, 26.5 TFLs, 7 interceptions, 3 touchdowns, 6.5 sacks, 13 quarterback hurries and 2 forced fumbles. He individually led the charge that saw the Baylor defense going from being an absolute embarrassment to civilized society (see the 67-56 win against Washington in the Alamo Bowl) to a respectable defense that held 7 of 13 opponents to 14 points or less. And the guy can't get an All Star invite or even a Combine invite. That is absolutely ludicrous and inexcusable.
Look at the size of this guy's neck. Watch him on tape, look at the All Star and Combine snubs, look at his neck in relation to his head, and tell me you don't get Zach Thomas vibes.
Whoa, good mention CK. Check out his game against TCU on YouTube. Good stuff. Seems like he would do really well at the combine too.
Lackey is #5 on these two clips, both interceptions against Texas Tech in 2012, one of which he returned for a touchdown. Look how well and fluidly the guy moves and trackes the quarterback from side to side. It's like watching an NFL Combine drill. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=2sWLEXAy6E4#t=180 http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=2sWLEXAy6E4#t=209 Here's a cutup from one of the draft breakdown guys of him against TCU.
He legit runs in the 4.5's. I've heard that reported by people close to Baylor. And you can see it on film. Just watch the interception return against TCU. He's running faster than the DBs and everyone else on the field as he tries to get out front and block for the return man. And he's the one that caused the pressure and hit on the QB that resulted in that pick. And if that doesn't show you his speed then look at the interception he got and returned for a touchdown. Also look at the way he related the receiver's route to what he was reading in the quarterback, that enabled him to jump the route. Once he had that ball he was off like a cannon shot.
Forgive the post. I'm just laying the ground work for some film. NFLdraftscout has him as the 52nd OLB. But what your showing me here...damn someone's missing a screw.
I'm a little ADHD here but I'm switching gears to Buffalo WR Alex Neutz for a minute because he's stood out to me big in this Buffalo-Baylor game. Great stats too. He's big at 6'2" or 6'3" and 210 lbs 2. He's been VERY consistent all year in producing 61 catches for 1024 yards and 12 TDs 3. That includes 15 catches for 295 yards and 2 TDs against the two ranked opponents they played, Ohio State and Baylor 4. He looks like a guy that people will mentally peg as your stereotypical tall/slow white receiver with good hands, however I'm watching him beat guys that run 4.52 and 4.49 in the 40 yard dash and he's doing it with straight up SPEED. He beat Baylor CB Joe Williams (4.52) with straight up long speed and he beat Ohio corner Travis Carrie (4.49) with speed 5. He absolutely abused Ohio State sophomore Armani Reeves, a former 4-Star corner who has been clocked anywhere from 4.35 to 4.41 depending on who you believe
The closing speed at :40 is phenomenal, reminds me of what I'd look for from Alec Ogletree. I'd rather roll the bones with this guy, Christian Jones, Misi and Jordan as 4/3 LBs, dump Wheeler and Ellerbe in 2015 at the latest and draft James Gayle to replace Jordan at DE, rotate him with Wake and Vernon- Gayle has a burst. The idea of going into next season with Wheeler and Ellerbe starting on defense makes me a little nauseous.
There are LBers in this draft slotted to be undrafted who I would rather have than Ellerbe and Wheeler.
What's the deal with Cyrus Kouandjio? His stock is kinda down right, but I always thought he was a better prospect than DJ Fluker who went 11th and played pretty well for San Diego. I wouldn't mind him at 19.
I think he is a bigger plodder type of Tackle that may have to play RT in the NFL. If I recall correctly he has had some trouble with speed rushers which could scare teams away from taking him higher in the draft and putting him on the left side. Additionally, I think his stock may be considered to be down a bit because a lot of times talent evaluators project players improving their game between each season; he may not have improved as much as they hoped.
