I don't know who I'm more embarrassed for - Ross (for obvious reasons) or Farmer for leaking this then seemingly/possibly changing his mind. Would probably be best for all parties to move on.

What specifically about the hiring process has been convoluted? We've requested interviews with about 9 people, held interviews with 7, and now are having a second round of interviews. What's convoluted about the hiring process?

Yup, of course they're wrong. The NFL has the coveted opening of GM [a dream opportunity for many] of a team with a decent roster, promising young QB, and good cap position, but not a sole is beating down the door for the opportunity. If this were the similarly talented 8-8 Steelers, 8-8 Bears, or 8-8 Ravens, top candidates would be tripping over themselves for the opportunity rather than preferring to keep their lesser jobs.

Ross has his fingers too much in this team's operations, either directly or indirectly, for a quality GM's taste. He does too much listening to Peterson, does too much consulting with other outside opinion, and seems to have too much of a commitment to Philbin, Aponte, and Gaine at the expense of any future GM. He needs to just fire everyone, publicly announce Peterson will no longer be connected with the organization [and carry through with it] and that his new GM will have full, uninterrupted control, and then hire a small group of trusted people to handle the GM hiring process, perhaps Jason Taylor, Marino, and someone with knowledge of the operations aspect of the league/draft and the league's personnel.

Hmm. Looks like Armando's report from this morning about Dawson being a finalist was right.

What makes you say he is our 6th choice?

How is he the 6th option? He's already had 2 interviews. You cannot consider Gamble or DeCosta as ever being an option since they wouldn't leave their current jobs for any other team. Of the ones who actually interviewed once, as far as you know Dawson could have been one of the top 2 options all along.

Come on man. Have you ever heard of a GM interview unfolding like this. Half the interviewee's have no idea what power structure we have...we have the Fritz Pollars group telling people to avoid the Phins..then after clarity..encourage them. Its just ...really after all the crap..the fact we can say we shouldnt be suprised..is bad. The perception is our team is a laugher. And they keep getting fed the ammunition to run with that perception.

At this point I would gain some respect for Ross if he told Farmer to go pound sand. Inexcusable to let this play out in the media like this. Just an amateur move by Farmer.

MC...you gotta admit Ross isnt doing himself any favors with all this. I mean your a smart guy. Would you run a interview process like this? Or ..even not address the misconceptions if they were way off based.

Its the fact that its public. There is very little public evidence..that supports the team is operating effeciently. How many other teams have you seen have as long a run at just totally non sensical episodes as the Phins. Its one thing after another. Its like they said in phinsiders..the Dolphins own radio show..when you have this much stuff keep happening..it just doesnt look good.

Farmer is confused on the reporting structure. Somehow...what ever was said during his interview ..he was left with concerns about who his boss was. Hes not an idiot.

Power structure refers to whether he's over the head coach or not. Final say refers to roster control, draft control, FA control, etc. He isn't over Philbin. Philbin will report to Ross regarding coaching issues. Aponte will report to Ross regarding cap issues. The GM will report to Ross regarding roster issues.

It's not that hard or confusing...

Ok. So..then Farmer must be a complete moron to have been confused on this point. And Im sure there was nothing else said..during the interview..that you nor I are privy to..that would have caused him confusion.

""He has reservations about the structure of the Dolphins," Wooten said. "He's not certain who would be running things, whether it would be him or someone else. I told him the only way you can find out is to take the second interview and get the answer."
Wooten believes Farmer is strongy considering his recommendation.

The position is not one where he is above the coach or the capologist. Instead of the GM being above Aponte and Aponte being above Philbin... each is to stay in his own lane.

Farmer is looking for who under Ross will be ranked the highest. The answer is no one. So if he's trying to figure out who it is, he's gunna be pondering for a while b/c there is no answer. Each will be asked to stay in their own lanes.

  32. vt_dolfan

vt_dolfan Season Ticket Holder Club Member

Then why would this structure be a cause for concern or confusion for a potential GM candidate?

Because..is Farmers job tied to Philbin? If the Phins suck next year..and Philbin is fired..will Ross chose the next HC. Will Ross evaluate Farmer's job differently then he evaluates Philbins job?

B/c it is atypical from the standard hierarchy system. So, he believes that one person will end up having "more power" than the others like in a typical hierarchy... so he's confused as to who that person would be. But the real answer is no one... which is what he was told.

Clearly, he's not confident in that b/c it's typically one that has more power than others.

  36. vt_dolfan

vt_dolfan Season Ticket Holder Club Member

But then clearly its not a situation alot of people are comfortable with..and if that hierarchy keeps you from hiring the best evaluators of talent..then shouldnt you change your hierarchy. Are you so stubborn this is the right way to do things..that you miss out on talented people like Farmer..Gamble..etc?

Ross is NOT creating the right atmosphere to bring in the best evaluators of talent. Hes creating the right atmosphere to bring in people who are willing to work in an atmosphere he has chosen to create.

We didnt miss out on Gamble b/c of the structure. He wasn't leaving regardless.

But whether you agree with the structure... it has nothing to do with our hiring process. We established the role of the position and have gone thru a standard hiring process to fill it.

If this hiring process is so standard...whens the last time you saw another NFL team handle a GM hire in this way?
