The only things that almost virtually guarantee I'll get teared up are soldier & family reunions. I don't watch them anymore.
Here's the thing... you see enough of these and then when your family is being honored you have to be thinking "Oh, Dad's probably gonna pop ou!" so when he doesn't you actually feel really let down. See? It's actually cruel to the other 9/10ths of families who don't get the surprise. You're mean when you like this.

Bit of a overexaggeration with the last statement. It's not brainwashing. It's playing to the lowest common denominator. The whole concept behind "No child left behind", which, if I ask my wife's parents (one of which was a superintedent, other was a teacher/principal), they agree that it was the worst thing to ever happen to US education. It's the same issue in business as well. I spend ~80% of my time managing the bottom quartile of my employees to allow them to catch up. The people who get hurt? The top quartile - who from a business perspective - we should be spending most of our time with because they are our future leaders. Same with the kids in school. The kids losing out on attention are the ones that are easily passing the MCAS tests and meeting the quotas. I can see it in my children's elementary school and they go to one of the best public school systems in the state.
