ROFL...I did. Screeeechhhh... I think what we are trying to say..was very well put up by Fin D. Right and wrong...morales...are all dictated by the societies in which we grow up and live in. In normal every day , bedroom in America life, this kind of locker room behavior is not the norm. But..in the NFL, it is. Based on that norm, you dont have to worry about whether or not the person you are teasing, hazing etc....is really inside very upset with it, when as far as we know, not one other person in the NFL years I can remember, has ever done anything like what Jonathan Martin has done. Richie Incognito has been in the league what..9 years? So...hes had what roughly...6-700 football players encounter him in the locker room, and just one, Jonathan Martin, has claimed he has been bullied so badly, he had to leave the Phins for his own safety? How do you deal with that fact....that many players...and only one...Jonathan Martin, who never once spoke a word, said that Richie Incognito made the locker room and playing for the Phins unbearable.
That's basically the risk you take by doing what you're doing. If you're playing those kind of games, you are voluntarily assuming the risk of whatever consequences. You're choosing to step way beyond basic social interactions when you're talking about ****ting in mouths and raping sisters, and you really don't have anyone to blame but yourself if you misjudge your audience, timing, or anything like that. Richie Incognito more Andrew Dice Clay with chronic traumatic encephalopathy than he is Louis CK in a jockstrap, and I don't have any pity for him even if it was well intentioned(Which I am pretty skeptical of)
I dont know that anyone really has any pity on Incognito. I just think its a shame that Martin took this route. I mean...really, what is the purpose of running a very public smear campaign against the Miami Dolphins and Incognito? The Phins said he left the team for personal reasons. They didnt offer any more information then that. Why release the tapes and texts to the media? Why go in front of the media last night...and say he was physically assaulted and his sister was threatened? The only reason you do that, is in some hope to gain financial gain from it. Hes not doing it to ....expose the evil atmosphere of the Miami Dolphins. Hes doing it for his own personal gain.
I would agree with you, if Martin let incognito, coaches or other players know and Cogs just went ahead and did it anyway. But the point you keep forgetting is that Martin not only kept it to himself, he pretended to be ok with it. He joined in. He pranked players. He laughed and joked with them. His actions show that he shoulders more blame for this continuing. He didn't follow a single avenue of protocol. You talk about the risk the Cogs takes by joking with his friends, what about the risks Martin takes by entering into an NFL locker room and pretending he's ok with the ribbing?
That's really not even the slightest bit uncommon, and doesn't indicate that Martin wasn't bothered by it. If you're involved with children on any level professionally, you'll get told this and trained on this kind of stuff over and over and over. Also, the fact that esteemed ThePhins.com poster mommabilly wouldn't stop talking about how Martin had tried to kill himself multiple times pretty much completely destroys the idea that Incognito should not have known to do this stuff.
That's the right thing for Martin to do if the team wasn't handling it. Given the best recourse Ireland seemed to offer was that he should fight Incognito, that's pretty crystal clear at this point.
Your awfully quick to believe gospel for everyone on Martins side...but..when it comes to the team....everything is in your words..crystal clear And...the team didnt KNOW ABOUT IT....TO HANDLE IT. And actually..AFTER THEY DID FIND OUT..and were given the texts and VM's....they suspended Richie. They gave the team the evidence....Richie was suspended. Why did they leak it to the media? Further more...the Miami Dolphins asked the NFL to come in and investigate the team. They didnt wait for the NFL to tell them they were coming. The NFL assigned a very reputable outside attorney to investigate the culture inside of the locker room. Why did Martins attorney release that statement last night?
Not at all. I think you can believe 85% of what both parties have said without problems, and the culpability is what it is.
I'm not sure why you keep coming back to this. It has nothing to do with what I'm saying nor am i arguing that its not common. How common it is to act the way Martin did is irrelevant in assigning culpability. It is not reasonable to assign blame to Cogs for not reading Martin's mind. Martin was using deception to hide the truth. Addicts do the same thing and are still responsible for their behavior. Based on Martin's behavior, Cogs had every reason to believe his behavior was acceptable.
I imagine a common reaction to being bullied is to try to stop it by befriending the bullies, particularly if the bully is highly respected by other people around and dubbed a leader.
Right, I get that. No one is arguing that. Come at from this angle, Cogs was never given the opportunity to do the right thing. Forget Martin's feelings for a moment. Why would Cogs think what he was doing is wrong? If he was told that Martin is hurt or offended then Cogs has the opportunity to the right thing and stop or be a douche and keep it up. He was never given that chance.
Because he should have a sense of where the line is and not to cross it. Richie's an adult. You make it sound like he's a toddler pushing his parents until they say 'no'. He's not a child; we need to raise the bar, imo. I don't know if he was the one talking about Martin's sister, but to me that's just something you never say. Particularly if he knew Martin had some psychological issues like his parents knew about (I image Richie knew of them as well). And now this story about holding mandatory OL meetings at strip clubs and fining no-shows? Another instance where something should click that this ain't right. (Jason Cole: http://www.nationalfootballpost.com/Incognito-held-Oline-meetings-at-strip-club.html)
Martin gave him no reason to think he was in the wrong. He laughed at his jokes and joined in on his pranks. They hung out together. The line you think Cogs should see was purposely hidden by Martin. You want Cogs to read Martin's mind and come to a conclusion that is counter to every tell Martin is putting out there. To you those are things you'd never say or want said to you, my friends are different. Hell my wife and I have said way worse things in jest to each other. The key here is that you'd let the person know what they were saying is unacceptable and Martin didn't. That means he bears responsibility in this.
He's just getting bigger and bigger and bigger every time his size is referenced. There's a potential for bullying and harassment any time there is a difference in power, regardless of size, age, physical size, fighting ability, etc.
Gusti....we arent going to change eithers opinion on this matter. Suffice it to say...I believe in personal responsibility. I wont be teaching my kids the Jonathan Martin Anti Bullying technique where you pretend to like your bullier for a year and a half, and then when it best suits you, throw everyone under the bus and run and cry help. My kids will be taught that if you are bullied there are support systems in place, for you to let the appropriate people know. And they will be taught, that sitting there, and smiling and joking around with said bully, and actually taking part in the "bullying" of other players...is not acceptable.
With all due respect, even if I'm not going to change your opinion, you're wrong almost categorically. What you're saying is basically contrary to the standards and practices to how bullying, harassment, etc. is handled in a professional context.
And your choosing to use a one sized fits all paint brush with regard to this...and that's naïve to say the least.
Because the lawsuits of lawsuits in coming down the pike. The lawyers on both sides are lining up all their ducks in a row....and it will bring people from every political corner into this mess. Agendas on top of agendas. By the time this is over....it will not be about Incognito anymore. It will open up a huge can of worms and pandoras box. Once the agents and lawyers get involved...this will be the messes of messes
I'm not sure what is a one-sized fits all paint brush as far as this goes. You're ****ing with a guy who you purportedly believe to have psychological problems, and afterwards he behaves strangely and almost contradictory? That really shouldn't be a huge shocker.
Well...Gusti you do have a point there. If in fact, Incognito knew Martin had contemplated suicide on more then one occasion, it would seem to me to put him through the normal hazing, and "toughen up" process as counter intuitive. I do have to give you props on that point.
Because public perception is important to him and his career, and a trained professional should be managing that given he's a public figure and not in the right frame of mind in general for it?
I don't think there is room for plausible deniability here- If esteemed ThePhins.com post mommabilly, aka Richard Incognito Sr. said that Martin had previously attempted suicide, Jr. knew about it. Is it really less damning if Incognito made that up to denigrate Martin and/or his complaints?
Well....I hate to say this, but what do you think the chances are that Martin has come completely clean with everything in regards to his agents, and more specifically his parents. Going public was a horrible idea....as now all of his dirty laundry is sure to get aired. For example....if we are to believe Cog's dads account of Martin's suicide attempts...then we should also believe him about Martin's drug use. Something tells me...his parents are about to learn alot more about Martin then they know.
I'm not sure, it's possible that he hasn't. I don't really think he had a choice other than to go public. If he quietly checked in to a mental health facility, and didn't air any grievances in public, what changes? I'm pretty well certain the Dolphins would have done little and buried the situation, and there's little doubt our crack team of investigators in the local market wouldn't have figured a damn thing out. Would the Dolphins have suspended Incognito? Would Philbin or Ireland done anything, given what is said to be their reactions to what occurred? If the Dolphins didn't fear a public relations disaster, would they have put him on the Non-Football Injury list and not paid him, like was rumored? I mean, at the end of the day Martin isn't on trial.
Well..in fairness..he's not. But how he handled this has put his entire team on trial. Sent from my SPH-L710 using Tapatalk 2
The part I am just not getting is why? Why air the lockerooms dirty laundry? Why not go and ask for a trade? Asked to be released? He had to know that once he did this he would never be able to go back into that lockeroom. That once he did this he would not only put his teammates, the coaches...the organization..the whole football fraternity on trial. Most importantly...all the skeletons Martin has in his own closet? Whether he likes it or not...he is now going to be the poster boy for so many different people and agendas. Both sides are going to come out guns blazing. Nothing good can come out of this. Nothing good will
If he's truly getting ****ed with and the team isn't dealing with it, it's absolutely moral and appropriate for Martin to handle things the way he has
Problem is that not only will the lockerooms dirty laundry will be aired but so will Martins. No turning back now
So what? Why should Martin be loyal to the team in these circumstances when the team doesn't seem to give a **** about him?
