Could this all have been just fraternal stuff that went way too far? I'm a white dude and you wouldn't believe some of the stuff that me and my black, mexican, asian, etc. friends say to each other all the time. But it's always in joking and just messing with each other. Then again, we're all really good friends and have been for years. Maybe Cogs just got waaaay too comfortable? I guess I'm just rambling...trying to make sense of it all...
I've never joked about harming someone's family. Can't say I've told someone I was going to **** in their mouth either.
It's pretty vague though... for all we know he said he's gonna plow his mother and you could legally take that as a threat.
I don't know what context that stuff would be in that would make it ok, particularly given the fact that Martin seemingly didn't think it was ok
Right..that's what I'm sayin. I'm not trying to justify anything at all..but we've said stuff to each other about visiting wives while a buddy had to work late, and it's always in jest.
My friends and I would say **** like that to one another in college. Context matters but probably won't in a court room.
Its hard not to want to clean house as a fan, its just so surreal. I miss discussions of Zach Thomas moving to safety at this point.
Nope, you just hold 'em down w/o any warning and pinch their nose until the mouth opens. FinD says you owe him a new toothbrush by the way.
Anyone remember the Egnew reports of a "player or players" verbally putting him down in his rookie training camp? It was about his 'toughness'. Who was it?
I saw Ice Cube say something like that in the 21 Jumpstreet movie. If a movie cop boss can say it to movie cops, maybe an offensive guard mike think it's okay to say it to an offensive tackle. In all seriousness, this story has gone from the weird to the bizarre in a hurry. And here we are in a season where we haven't been to the playoffs in a long while, we're 4-4 with Tampa next (so a good chance to move to 5-4), so we're in line to make a pretty good push for the playoffs and a successful season. It so reminds me of my Auburn Tigers, when we were undefeated early in the 2010 season, and Cam Newton had just broken out against South Carolina and LSU, and the huge story broke about recruiting violations and his father wanting money and so on. Even though Auburn kept winning, it took so much fun out of the season. Of course, we did end up winning the mythical national championship. So if things parallel... maybe the Dolphins make the playoffs. But it's definitely hard to enjoy (at least for me).
http://nfl.si.com/2013/11/04/richie...phins-jonathan-martin/?sct=hp_t2_a9&eref=sihp WOW: Update: Citing multiple sources, CBS’ Jason La Canfora reported Monday that Martin has made available to the Dolphins and the NFL several texts allegedly sent to him by Incognito that include racial slurs as well as threats to both Incognito and his family. Among the texts are at least one instance in which Incognito refers to the biracial Martin as a “half-n****r”. La Canfora added: “There are several instances of threats as well, the sources said, and overall disturbing exchanges, including one in which Incognito refers to defecating in Martin’s mouth.” Sorry if this is a repost, haven't had the time to go through the entire thread. But wow if this is true Incognito needs to be cut yesterday and we need to try and recoup any money we can from him if we gave him any bonuses. Wow, I'm speechless.
Nah. Cogs can and will be cut. The story kind of ends there. People can make more out of it all they want but it seems like this is all falling square on cogs. Which is fine, cut him. Garner will get us through.
I remember him getting punked on Hard Knocks I thought it was funny. Essentially it seems the rookie season is trial by fire for these guys. Either you fold or rise up under the pressure, if vets are hounding you because your dropping passes and missing blocks well then work on it and shut them the eff up with improvement. Egnew was god awful and he even caught crap from coaches not just players. Bottom line is the NFL is no place for weak minded individuals, people like Ed Reed, Ray Lewis, T Suggs, , and N. Suh eat people like that up for breakfast. So think of vets like that nagging asshat big brother of yours that keeps putting you in headlocks and beating you up daily, he does it because he can but deep down it builds character.
I heard coming in that the $15K for the Vegas trip was during our bye week just a couple weeks ago, I would suspect that this stuff has been brewing and Martin having to pay for a trip he didn't want to take and didn't take was the final straw and hence everything blowing up in our faces. Just speculation but it does make sense to me.
Adam Schefter @AdamSchefter 3m 1: Richie Incognito left this VM for Jonathan Martin in April 2013: "Hey, wassup, you half n----- piece of (expletive)... Adam Schefter @AdamSchefter 2m 2. More Incognito to Martin: "I saw you on Twitter, you been training ten weeks. (I want to) (expletive) in your (expl) mouth.... Adam Schefter @AdamSchefter 2m 3. Incognito VM to Martin: "(I'm going to) slap your (expletive) mouth. (I'm going to) slap your real mother across the face (laughter). Adam Schefter @AdamSchefter 2m 4. Incognito to Martin, all on same VM in April 2013: "(Expletive) you, you're still a rookie. I'll kill you."
Apples to oranges. MLB took over the Dodgers because Frank McCourt couldn't pay his bills and there were questions whether he was going to be able to meet payroll. The NFL isn't going to take over a franchise because of "lack of institutional control" to use an NCAA term.
Adam Schefter @AdamSchefter 2m NFL has heard Richie Incognito's VM to Jonathan Martin. Dolphins have heard the voice mail.
I agree with this. It'll be portrayed as an actual threat because of the literary outlook people will have though. I guarantee that.
Well, I think Martin's gone, too, and if we don't make the playoffs, so are the GM and coach, but that was probably happening anyway... but that story is yet to be written. In the end, and through this week-to-come's media maelstrom, I guess after next Monday, I'd just like to be 5-4.
True, but its just as likely that he never let Ritchie know it bothered him to the degree it did. I've seen nothing form Ritchie that would indicate he was serious about this stuff. Based on the dates given, its quite possible that Incognito was just joking around (repulsive, I know) and Martin was offended and approached Philbin (stories said they met in the spring). Then it seems like things got better because Martin was joining in with the hazing and pranking...until the lunch incident.
I want to hear the voicemails because that's when its easier to get a understanding of their intent, if he is serious on doing harm to Martin or just thrash talking with him.
Well Incognito is gone, he's a free agent anyways but I wouldn't resign Martin. He's not that good and I find it hard to believe that he'll regain the respect of his peers in the NFL.
