coaching, coaching & coaching, along with more flexible/protective adjustments in the offensive scheme & game plans... these guys have to step up & do their job

could any of these ideas be part of the week-six fix?

    1) let Tannehill roll out & pass. he has wheels & is a very accurate passer on the move. use a QB draw now & then... use a safety valve out of the backfield... Marcus Thigpen comes to mind
    2) employ TE's to bolster the OL more often or simply use extra an offensive linesmen once in a while
    3) find the most mobile athletic linesmen (not in the starting line-up) & convert him to a situational fullback
    4) insert Nate Garner at RG or give *Danny Watson a shot at the start, while moving Jerry to RT
    5) stick with the running game... there has to be balance in the attack to keep defenses guessing

got to protect RT or start Moore until we can provide reasonable protection. the chances of him becoming damaged goods with 77 sacks on the season are probable... just not worth the loss of a franchise QB in-the-making in pursuit of play-off bragging rights

    :deadhorse:

my personal expectation is a fix in game six. I believe Tannehill has the potential to lead us into a decade-long predominance of the AFC & turn this franchise into a perennial contender in the NFL, if he doesn't become road-kill in his second NFL season. you have to consider his lack of experience at the university level. great expectations have to be aligned/reconciled with prudence...

lastly, at this point in time I do not think there can be found a viable answer outside our roster

*Danny Watson: how many first round offensive guards have ever been drafted? the guy has to have something going for him. maybe all he needed was a change of scenery & another chance to be all he can be. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Danny_Watkins

that's the 2nd time I've read that here. such an insanely stupid idea. We are 3-2. starting your backup is giving up on the season. no team is going to do that. no coach is going to do that if he wants to stay employed.

Ohio Fanatic, maybe you should read before you post...

I said: "my personal expectation is a fix in game six. I believe Tannehill has the potential to lead us into a decade-long predominance of the AFC & turn this franchise into a perennial contender in the NFL, if he doesn't become road-kill in his second NFL season..."

I am not suggesting we start Moore over Tannehill if there is a fix in the making. I would, however, consider it after game six, if it becomes obvious there is no remedy available.

I respect your right to agree or disagree, but only after you've read what has been written & refute it in a civil manner. in the end, I doubt if Philbin will ask either one us our opinion on the subject. he makes the decisions. having said that, nothing would surprise me. I rule nothing out.

now tell me, what is your fix for game six?

p.s. the only thing stupid on a forum is to bloviate after taking a statement out of context.

I hope we can find a solid fix in game 6.. I agree that I can't approve RT being sacked so many times in one season, but I doubt he'll ever lose the starting gig before it's too late.

I'd like to give Watkins a chance or attempt more runs. However, I feel like one has to improve before the other is effective. It's an infinite loop of blame the OL 2013.

I Did read your whole statement. and usually I enjoy your posts. but IMO, whether there's a "fix" or not, you don't pull Tannehill. You find a way to maximize his protection, even if it's only a small improvement.

Please, stop. We're a 3-2 team, possibly contending for the playoffs. Ryan Tannehill is the starter, period. He's not getting benched for his own protection... The idea is absurd. It will never happen. And Tannehill isn't "probably" going to be damaged goods just because he's getting sacked.

While I may not have responded the same way, I don't disagree with the sentiment (that is, don't pull your starting QB) that Ohio Fanatic is making. I understand your context, but here are a few notes:

    1) Right now, Ryan Tannehill is our offense. One of his strengths, as has been pointed out (especially in CK's) posts, is that he makes decisions and gets rid of the ball quickly. As bad as our offensive line has been, Ryan Tannehill still somewhat mitigates their "badness" by his quick decision-making. We have a chance to be 4-2 and go to New England with first place on the line if we can beat Buffalo. There is a reason coaches don't pull starting QBs. The whole locker room would question it, because every player to a man in that room thinks Ryan Tannehill is the quarterback that gives them the best chance to win. And the players aren't the only people that see that. Coaches, fans, and owner see that as well. Pulling the starter in the situation we're in is unheard of, and the coaching staff would make a serious mistake to do so, no matter how much one thinks Tannehill's career and the Dolphins record down the road would benefit from it. Players don't play for down the road, they play for the season they're playing now. There would be a team mutiny, at least in thought if not in action, if Tannehill was pulled.

And on the practical side, you're pulling a guy who makes quick decisions and is a little more athletic for a guy who makes slower decisions. Does that sound like a recipe for success behind our leaky line? That sounds to me like a coaching staff really trying to break the sack record. Because they'd be sabotaging the team by doing so.

    2) One of the fixes, as has been mentioned by Tannehill, himself, are more rollouts, screens, bubble screens, etc. The latter two are more like extended runs, and you can add quick stop routes to those. Throw it out to WRs (Thigpen included), and let them make some of those 5-7 yard plays we're not getting in the running game. They're high percentage, and every once in a while, like on a run, you break one.

    3) Running the ball more often in general. A few posters, and Mike Pouncey, himself, have suggested running the ball more often, and being committed to it, will help ease the pass rush we encounter some. It will also give us more chances to break runs and get running yardage. Yes, it gets hard to discipline yourself, as a coach, and especially against good run-stopping teams, to do so, because you find yourself in too many second and longs or third downs, whereas the instant gratification of a 10+ yard pass feels better. However, keeping defenses honest is important insofar as just not letting them tee off on the QB. We got to do that against Cleveland, remember? How'd that end up for Brandon Weeden? Sort of the same way it's been for Tannehill. Run the ball. It's a fix.

    4) And when you do run, how about let's run it a little more behind our two best blockers, Pouncey and Incogs? I think, to this point, our runs behind those guys have been pretty successful. We like to run stretches and off tackles, but really, right now, our strength is probably more running inside the tackles. We don't have a true fullback, but it's not like Charles Clay is helpless. He can block some in there. So there's that, and there's also the read option, which Tannehill has run to some success. I don't want him taking a ton of hits (he gets enough of those already), but a little more read option might spark something in the running game as well. Certainly, it has helped us in down and distance, or in a big play here and there. And you might try running Thigpen a little bit out of the shotgun. We're in the shotgun an awful lot, and that may be a good way to get Thigpen in space. At least it should get some more positive runs than we have been getting.

    5) Lastly, I mentioned on another thread, I might at least give a try to swinging Jerry to tackle and trying Watkins at guard. I think this, while not helping the passing game too much on the face of it as a Watkins/Jerry protection duo sounds a lot like a Jerry/Clabo twosome in theory, would help the running game a bit as Watkins is a decent run blocker and Jerry's probably as good or better than Clabo out there on the edge. Sounds like the coaching staff is against this line of thought, so I'm really just shouting into the wind.

There's probably not a lot else to do. Tannehill, I believe, is going to keep getting better. We're going to get healthier on defense, which hopefully will turn into a couple more offensive possessions each game and maybe some shorter fields if we can get some turnovers. At 3-2, there's still a whole lot to play for, really everything to play for, so a change like pulling Tannehill (because you're risking his long-term availability) doesn't make much sense.

he is on schedule to be sacked 77 times in his second year. to my knowledge, this has never happened to a QB before in NFL history, having the the guy survive & thrive. only Randall Cunningham even comes close to that mark at 72 sacks in year two... if you think getting hit by 300 lb freaks of nature, especially from the blind-side 77 times is not a potentially career-ending event in the life of a rookie QB, then we have an irreconcilable difference of opinion.
having said that, you might be right. I hope so. we shall see... if the fix is in, the entire subject is mute.

we are in agreement... that is all I have suggested. having said that, if the sack-direction is not mitigated everything (including saving Rookie Ryan) is on the table. or at least, in my humble opinion, should be for the good of the franchise. just not worth the loss of a franchise QB in-the-making in pursuit of play-off bragging rights. hopefully, it will not come to that...
like you & every other dolfan I am looking forward to an exciting 2013 & post season

As bad as the OL and RB's have been so far this season, it appears many on here have overlooked the fact the defense has regressed this season, when compared to recent seasons. Granted Wake has missed the past two games, but the secondary has played very mediocre ball for the past five games and the LB's have not been the upgrade expected when Ellerbe and Wheeler were signed to replace Dansby and Burnett. In fact Dansby and Burnett have played superior football for their new teams so far this season.

None of the rookies drafted in the early rounds of the draft have really helped much at all. Jordan has make two relevant plays in five games, but I expected more from the first defensive player taken in the entire draft. The fact he appears to be a player the coaches don't have confidence in stopping the run is not a great sign at this time. I expected a lot more play from him once Wake when down with his injury, but so far he has had very little playing time.

The pass defense has been questionable so far, especially in regards to covering the opposing teams TE's. Without Wake, the pass rush has also suffered greatly over the past two games.

If the Dolphins had a great offense at this time, a regression by the defense may not be as big a problem. Unfortunately the offense is still a huge question mark because of the OL and the RB's.

I don't know if the problems this team is having on offense and defense are coaching related or just that the overall talent isn't good enough to overcome these issues. Hopefully the second part of the season will resolve these issues. If not, the coaches and many of the players will have to be concerned about their positions with the team after this season is over.

    everything is always "coaching related"
having said that, we have had crucial injuries throughout the defense. the offensive line has escaped relatively unscathed. they have no excuse.
anyway you cut it, 3/2 is not chopped liver with the schedule we've had to play.

How has it regressed? If anything they deserve credit for playing well despite missing their starters at the end of the last two games.

I can understand that it's depressing we have so many injuries and our healthy Oline sux balls. But it's too doom-and-gloom around here.
If Sturgis hits that FG and we pull out a win vs Baltimore in OT, how different would all these threads be? We'd be 4-1 and talking about "shoring" up the protection, not benching Tannehill for his own protection or blaming the coaches.
    - We can get healthier
    - Our Oline can only play better, because they can't play much worse. At least their healthy, and if they stay that way, they might move up to the 24th ranked Oline (I can dream).
Don't spend the whole bye week convincing yourself the sky is falling. If we lose at home to Buffalo, THEN we can all join the CLB. (glad I never changed my description

Exactly OF, yds allowed means little compared to points allowed.

We were dinged up and this Bye came at a great time for everyone, players and Staff.

We all know Ryan can't abandon the pocket every time. That is just not productive. If the OL line is getting beat you better dial up some screens and draw plays.
The rub is we don't have that play maker in the backfield. Miller hasn't been good in space. Can't get a yard in two plays. Pinning that on the Oline? Wallace should be getting a bubble play to utilize his speed. What about a wheel route sometime again?
    Sherman has been real bad.

tHE COACHING on this team is pitiful. I know people try to blame it all on JI but I think Philbin is really a passive aggressive coach, show some balls JOE, give me Belichek's Mind with Rex's fiery personality and Ozzie's talent evaluating and roll it all into one and BAM, you got yourself a winner. Right now you have just Skinny Joe, Okay guys i love daniel thomas, that's my guuuuy. He reminds me of Richard Jenkins from Burn After Reading, a scared rabbit, if your scared Joe, go get a Dog.
