I'd rather have had Monroe. The Ravens apparently feel the same way.

His ineptitude was a prime reason they traded for Monroe in the first place. If they're going to explore a trade option, aim higher.

Bryant McKinnie isn't a very good player and he's a problem. He'd be a downgrade from Jonathan Martin.

Ozzie is light years ahead of the majority of GMs in the NFL, so that statement is meaningless

I wish we'd have been on the line with JAX because his contract isn't too big. His entire deal is like $32 million or something. Essentially you have teams doing what we did this off-season. Drafting a LT then realizing LT and RT are actually different positions. Vernon Carey was one of the smoothest transitions from LT to RT that I've seen recently. He was also a good LT and a veteran when it happened. Same with us and Jonathan Martin, jettisoning veterans who are known commodities for the potential of a young player. Martin has yet to show he's a 5 year starter in our case though. I wouldn't be surprised if Jason Peters is on the outs soon (after this season the latest) to make way for Lane Johnson. Brandon Albert won't be traded because of his expiring contract but I'd bet damn good money he won't be a Chief next season. Albert is the only one of this bunch I'd look to personally. McKinnie isn't what he used to be at 32 and I'm not interested in starting Tyson Clabo twice in one season.

We really should have went after Volmer stronger IMO though. $27 million in NE over 4 years (a lot of that in incentives). We also had the opportunity to weaken a rival who still looks pretty dangerous when they're weakened.

Yup. As good of a TE as he was, he's an incredible GM.

Yes. Lets give up a pick to Ozzie Newsome mid season. What has that guy ever done to make us think any trade for one of his players wouldn't work out in Miami's favor? Oh wait.

If there's any GM in the NFL to listen to its him. If he thinks Mckinnie is expendable we should take his word for it.

 They just traded to get a guy, to replace McKinnie because of how bad he's been, and we should now trade for McKinnie? Wow... He's so good, he's being replaced. Makes no sense...

There aren't any good ones available, and a new one would have to learn the system and get acclimated. We have what we have. Suffer through it and wait for the offseason. We're not going to the Super Bowl this year.

That's not a reason to make or not make a trade. Ozzie Newsome is most certainly fallible.

Let's see...McKinnie has given up 1 sack in 182 pass blocking snaps. Martin has given up 4 in 164, and Clabo has given up 4 in 164. Yeah, gee, I guess McKinnie couldn't help us in pass protection. Nothing to see here folks, let's move along.

That's kinda skirting the issue. Martin has given up 4 sacks, 1 hit and 8 hurries and isn't as penalty prone. Bryant has given up 1 sack, 2 hits and 11 hurries. His run blocking is also rated even poorly. His PFF ranking is in Clabo territory (61), Martin 38. PFF is clearly stating that Tanny is holding the ball too long as they are giving Martin an overall POSITIVE 2.1 pass block rating (Would love to actually hear why they have given him that though).

I traded for Monroe in GML. Hurts me to see him traded so lowly without us getting involved. Very solid top 8 tackle whose having a poor year...but who isn't in Jacksonville. I expect his rating to fly up now in Baltimore.

McKinnie has a better PBE than Clabo or Martin. Our biggest liability now is pass protection. IMO it is ludicrous to think McKinnie couldn't help us in the short term. If we could get him for a 6 or 7, I'd do it. I'd try Watkins at RG too.
I don't know what's going on with their run blocking. Oher is rated the worst run blocking tackle in the league right now. McKinnie is 3rd worst, and Martin and Clabo are 4th and 5th worst. Even if it were a wash in run blocking, I think McKinnie could help the pass protection, and doing a better job of keeping RT17 upright should be the #1 priority for things that need improving.

Have you ever considered the logical paradox that would happen if Ireland made player acquisition you agreed with?

    Think about it.

If every move he makes is bad because you think its stupid, then what happens when he makes a move you agree with? I think you'll be stuck in hate loop wherein your brain collapses on itself.

Not by much. It's a whole 7 spots. Not ludicrous at all. What your suggesting is to fix a bullet hole by shooting the OL with a bigger bullet.

  28. MrClean

What I am suggesting is replacing a pass blocking liability with a somewhat better pass blocker. You apparently do not agree that McKinnie is any better at pass protection than Clabo or Martin, either one.

What is John Jerry's problem by the way? He's played well at tackle at times and he's built like a RT.

Jerry is not working at guard. Clabo was never meant to be a long term solution. Why not try Yeatman at right tackle. I would do it now and that might be Clabo is cut. I don't know. Sometimes we shoot off about a lineman not playing well and do so without an understanding of assignments and roles. However, Jerry appears to have regressed. But you have more than one guy on the staff that supposedly understands the OL. Outcomes for the next few weeks will determine if they fix it. 18 sacks now, what will it be in a month? That will say a lot.

I just don't agree with this logic that if a guy is big and powerful at RT, he suddenly can play guard, it simply doesn't work unless the guy has the technique, knee bend, and nasty attitude that defines interior play. Jerry is Vernon Carey junior at RG.

When you have our head coach and OC both having backgrounds as successful OL coaches, combined with the OL coach they selected to oversee our OL, it would seem they'd collectively know what they're doing when it comes to assembling a solid OL.

And yet often times that simply isn't the case. There have been numerous times where we've said collectively on this board that something isn't going to work and it doesn't. I'd give Philbin the benefit of the doubt because he's an intelligent guy but I seriously disagree with starting a large tackle like Jerry at RG, while not playing Watkins who is tailor made for a ZBS guard. Physically he's another Incognito.

That's exactly what I have been saying. PFF has him rated at Clabo's level. I would have been all over that Monroe trade though. He has at least played at a high level the past couple years and should rebound in a better situation.

Right now the only thing they can try if they aren't willing to make a trade is to slide Yeatman in at RT (because if he can't improve on Clabo....why waste a spot on him in the first place?) and try Watkins at RG. Can it really get worse at those 2 spots?

It really isn't meaningless. It takes GM's like Ozzie Newsome to get teams to be consistent winners in the NFL. The best teams in the the NFL are always the teams which have the best player personnel directors and a top tier coach.

Mediocre teams have mediocre GM's and mediocre coaches and bad teams have bad GM's and the worst coaches.

The only way the Dolphins will ever get to the level of the Ravens on a year to year basis is to hire a great GM and great HC. I don't believe Ireland is now or ever will be a great GM. As far as Philbin goes, I'll let the next GM decide his fate. If this GM wants Philbin to stay and thinks he is the right man for the job, I'm okay with that. If on the other hand he wants to hire his own HC. I will have no problem with that either.

Jerry hasn't been working out since he was drafted, yet he is still here. Ireland has shown a history of taking players like Clabo who were once decent players but aren't any longer. After six years as the teams GM and millions spent on the OL, you would think that Ireland could have at least drafted and signed five OL's who could make up at least an average NFL OL. Unfortunately he appears to have no clue what he is doing when it comes to building a quality OL.

He has drafted one decent offensive lineman in the past three years, Pouncey. He signed Incognito in free agency. Other than those two offensive linemen, Ireland has signed or drafted a bunch of below average to just plain lousy offensive linemen over the past three years. In his first three years as the teams GM, the only success he had signing or drafting offensive linemen was when the Dolphins took Jake Long with the first pick in the 2008 draft. None of the other offensive linemen drafted or signed in free agency during those first three years were worth a damn.

The OL and the secondary were major areas of concern for this team when Ireland came here six years ago. Both these units continue to be major areas of concern six years later. This team may be 3-1 right now, but they are still several players away from being a legitimate top tier team in the NFL.

The fact that the overall defense has regressed this season with the addition of Ellebe and Wheeler is also a bad sign for the future of this team. Grimes appears to be the one solid addition to this defense. Unfortunately he hasn't been having a season which is any better than Smith has been having in KC. So the Grimes signing appear to be a wash when compared to not resigning Smith in the off season.

PFF also has McKinnie ahead of either Martin or Clabo in Pass Blocking Efficiency.
    33rd, McKinnie, 94.1
    40th, Martin, 93.4
50th, Clabo, 91.2, out of 60 total tackles who've played at least 50% of their team's snaps.
