It's one of those injurys that just lingers. As long as he's back after the bye week I'm okay with it.

I didn't know that Jimmy Graham was traded to the Patriots. When did that happen?

This is probably the more appropriate thread for this.

The two injuries on their side that interest me most are to DE Tyrunn Walker and CB Jabari Greer.

Walker has not gotten many snaps, but he's been highly impressive on the ones he's gotten. I've had a crush on him as a player since I saw him first in preseason of 2012. He was a nightmare to block, all over the place. PFF has him 16th out of 66 in Pass Rush rating among 3-4 DEs and that's with only 35 snaps. That's like a guy being 16th in receiving yards while only playing 10 snaps a game. If you flip to their efficiency metrics which take into account number of snaps, he's top 3 amongst 3-4 ends for pass rushing. If he's unavailable, even for those 12 snaps or whatever, that's a good thing.

Jabari Greer isn't a special corner but he is their starter. His being Limited in practice is interesting.

The other injuries, I'm not sure how much they work in our favor. Guard Tim Lelito was out of practice but Jahri Evans is back on a Limited basis and he's the starter. Lelito had an AWFUL game in place of Evans, according to PFF.

Lance Moore could be out but Nick Toon comes in his place and the way Moore has fizzled I'm not sure the younger, more energetic Toon isn't an upgrade. He played really well this preseason.

Mark Ingram continues to be out of practice and that's a positive because it means they dish the carries to Pierre Thomas, Darren Sproles and Khiry Robinson, all of whom are an upgrade.

Broderick Bunkley continues to hurt but he's only played 7 snaps this year anyway, he's not been part of the defensive turnaround at all.

Roman Harper possibly being out is interesting. Harper hits like a mack truck. But I have ALWAYS considered him much more of the PROBLEM on that worst-in-history type defense the Saints ran prior to 2013, than the solution. I don't know what the fascination is there. He missed Week 3 and that was their best game of the season, defensively. Rafael Bush looks like a straight upgrade.

I'm going to go ahead and guess that Paul Soliai, Cam Wake and Dimitri Patterson miss this game.

Wake is the toughest call, IMO. He will want to go. But we have a pretty conservative staff that has already gone through some situations where they suffered setbacks (Dimitri Patterson, Jamar Taylor, Dion Jordan) that cost players more time than they thought. But this is the best player on the football team. You can't mess around with him. If he does play, it will be situationally on obvious pass rush downs.

I think Koa Misi will play with a harness. Dannell Ellerbe will play through the pain. Chris Clemons will be a go, just as he was last week.

None of the other injuries are of consequence.

Our secondary against their skill units and quarterback does scare me. Nolan Carroll, Jimmy Wilson, Chris Clemons...Reshad Jones has NOT been good in coverage this year...

I wouldn't necessarily say Jones has been great against the run either. It's been a disappointing 3 games so far for him.

The X-factor in the secondary could be Will Davis and/or Jamar Taylor. There is not much film for Brees to study on these guys. Would be nice if that counted for something, but I'm not counting on it.

I think he's been pretty good against the run, personally. I don't blame the run stopping issues on him. Good blitzing, too.

If Will Davis gets significant time in the slot, I think he has that big play I mentioned in preseason.

Sometime this year the kid makes a big, positive impact highlight reel play. I believe that comes Monday, if he gets enough snaps.

I think he loves the spotlight, and this is MNF vs the undefeated Saints. Time to do his best Tracy Porter Superbowl pick-six impression. Coincidentally, I see some similarities between Davis and Porter.

if you see video interviews at their lockers during game week after practice, they will play...misi had an interview yesterday, so had ellerbe, they don't allow injured players to speak to the media i guess, wake had no interview this week, so we'll see if my theory is down the drain or not

Wouldn't surprise me if you were right for the most part. Although I will say Omar on twitter mentioned something about Wake being unavailable to talk to media because he went immediately for treatment for like the second or third time that day.

I think you would be surprised by Reggie Wayne's production as of late.

Since Colston has been in the league, I believe he has 1 season where he clearly out-produced Reggie Wayne overall. The rest is a matter of opinion.

Since Colston came into the League:

    Colston: 546 REC 847 TGT 7,596 YARDS 13.9 AVG. 59 TD
    Wayne: 681 REC 1,094 TGT 9,099 YARDS 13.4 AVG. 51 TD

I think the recent history is especially relevant since Reggie Wayne is what, 34 or 35 years old? Just take last year as an example, Reggie got a lot of yards but Colston had twice the touchdowns.

Given how many overall weapons the Saints have and how Brees likes to distribute the football, fewer yards is understandable to me for Colston but the touchdonws IMO shows his value. For example, Wayne averaged only 7.5 yards per attempt his direction while Colston averaged 9.2, which suggests a good part of Wayne's yardage premium was just due to the rookie leaning on him rather than on rookies like Hilton, Allen and Fleener.

Plus schematically Colston is a nightmare because of what he can do from the slot with that size. Philbin would cream himself if he could get hold of him, I think.

    Got some interesting facts... 2013...

Brees has good QBR (avg) and stats for the first 2 quarters so far this year (3 TDs-1 INT)... but...

He goes down to the 70's in QBR in the 3rd and 4th quarters (2 TDs-3 INTs)...

Now Thill has decent (avg)- QBR in the first 2 Quarters (1 TD-1 INT)...

He has good numbers in the 3rd-4th quarters (3 TDs-1 INT)...

So if the Monday night game shows NO leading the first two quarters within a score or so... We have the history to take the game in the 2nd half...

On the Colston argument. Arguably the best slot reciever in the NFL. But when he plays on the outside he's just not as dangerous. IMO

Indeed. Was hoping Evans would be out for the game. Colston has a foot injury of some sort. Hopefully it slows him down or is bothersome enough to affect timing. Brees has been put down 10 times this season already, so their pass protection is already suspect. Looking for a big game from DJordan, Wake (on passing downs if he plays), Starks, Odrick, and our other blitzers.

Saints fan perspective: Colston is definitely more dangerous in the slot than on the outside (as the X or Z). I don't know about best slot receiver in the NFL, there's some good ones (e.g. Cruz, Welker, etc.) but since you said it, I'll go with it :) . But in fact, much of Payton's scheme is based on exploiting match-ups and space to open up the seam and middle routes. If Graham is standing up, Colston is lined up in the slot and Sproles is on the field - the opposing safeties and linebackers have very difficult choices to make. When you add deep threats (getting Meachem back was tremendous) to pull the top off, the possibility of DB help goes away and Brees looks to find the mismatch in the middle of the field - or perhaps to find Sproles on the wheel route if the defense has over-compensated to Graham and/or Colston in the middle.

Lance Moore is an excellent route-runner who is also good at exploiting space in this scheme (either in the middle or on the short to medium outside routes). But he has had a quiet season so far and now has an injury.

The Saints OLine has definitely been off this season. Pass protection and run blocking have suffered. Brees has been hurried and sacked far more than his average. I think Evans is going to play - he would have played last week if he had to, and now he's had eight more days of rest or light work on the pulled hammy.

A good Phins pass rush could mean problems for the Saints. Especially if you can get it without blitzing too much. Brees's effectiveness goes up quite a bit when blitzed.

Yes, we've had our own issues with pass protection as well. The right side with Jerry and Clabo have struggled in each game, but also the backs and TEs have had serious gaffs with assignments and missed blocks. Both Tannehill and Brees have been put down far more than you would have expected for either team.

Tannehill typically fares well against the blitz as well and has really good accuracy on the run. This season he is really shining on 2nd down with a 119+ passer rating on that down, setting us up for 3rd and shorter distances than in the past. Expecting the Saints to try and neutralize Wallace and Hartline, so Gibson and Clay should have some opportunities. Also hoping Miller busts some long runs and gets his hands working in this game. He dropped too many last week.

Definitely agree with all that you said. I want to see Dion Sims maybe get a few balls thrown his way tonight in the red zone. We're going to have to figure out this tight end situation because of Keller obviously with his contract and the fact that we've spent 3 early round picks the past few years on TE's you'd think 1 should really blossom.

I think the Saints should fear Miller the most - especially if he also gets touches in the passing game. I think screens really slow the Saints pass rush (because it comes from the edges) and we have been vulnerable to big runs. I'm hoping the elevated play from Cam Jordan and Junior Gallette (our edge rushers) continues - they're both having breakout seasons.

It's really a shame about Keller, I hated seeing him go down . . . he's got game that I'm sure is being missed. I don't know too much about the Dolphins other tight-ends. The Saints have done a decent job of covering TEs but some of these personnel have historically been bad it it so it's hard to know just how much we've improved there.

Slot performance this year according to PFF:

Brandon Gibson tied for 6th. Colston right behind tied for 9th. Colston is only spending 56% of his time in the slot. Gibson 94% +

Screens would really slow the pass rush, but our OL has to be able to execute and get out there. John Jerry is too slow, so screens to the right would dpeend on Pouncey and Clabo, who is not nimble either. More likely a screen to the left, which still may not function too well as Martin is spotyy blockng in space despite being able to get out there, and Incog is pretty good blocking in space IF he gets there but he is so spotty about being mobile enough to get out there and get good position that overall he is not great on screens either.

If we run screens, it's a lot on Pouncey. And likely to the left.

The widlcard is, I think Dion Sims could be helpful on screens. So could Rashard Matthews. Not as receivers, but as blockers.
