I would rather have Carrol out on the boundary than Marshall, honestly. He's acceptable there until Taylor/David are ready. Patterson and Marshall are terrible out on the boundary. That's been proven throughout their careers. So there competition was regarding the slot, were they both excel. Patterson won so Marshall was released.

Nickel and Dime Cb's, you folks do realize Patterson has a sprained ankle, the same guy who said he did not want to put up any bad film which ushered him out of Cleveland, so that would then mean Carroll as the #2 and Stanford or Wilson as the Slot Cb, and the other as the #3 cb. Grimes/Carroll/Wilson will most likely be our starting Cb's on Sunday, not exactly comforting.
So we should blow 5 million bucks by keeping Marshall around a game or two until the other guys get healthy? Anyone even know who Clevalands 3rd and 4th WR are? lol. I think we will survive...

That is not what happened. There were a number WRs he tried to get last year. He knew the whole time our WRs weren't acceptable and said as much. Thing is, WRs have to available before you can acquire them.

For the record, Richard Marshall is not listed as a starter for the Chargers. He's behind Derek Cox and Shareece Wright.
He was a starter-like paid guy without a position. He wasn't good enough at S to unseat any of the starters. He lost a battle to Patterson to get into the lineup. One of the two (Patterson/Marshal) were not going to be here come the first game. He lost. He legitimately lost on the field to Patterson. It's that simple. It's a money move. Davis wasn't hurt when he was cut and Taylor was on track to start practicing again. It was a good fiscal move and a good football move, at the time. Ireland is good, but not good enough to predict that Taylor was going to suffer a setback and Davis was going to turn an ankle. Oh and they did the humane thing for Marshall by letting him go in time to latch on to another team... Oh, and Mr. C...we wouldn't have seen a lot of Taylor even if he were not injured to this point...geez, it's before the first game of the season in his rookie campaign, how is that "a length of time"??
We cut him before we owed him more money. Our pass rush is better than last year. Nickle and dime corners aren't a big concern week 1 against the browns without Gordon IMO. Both corners (rookies) should be back week 2 when we will need them more. Having Marshall tomorrow doesn't make a difference either way.
Why are you so upset, this is the same team that traded Brandon Marshall last year and never replaced him, the same team that allowed Jake Long to walk and do nothing to replace in either a trade or a draft. Its the same old story.
I guess im mistaken. I thought we all agreed in the offseason that either Patterson or Marshall would be gone by week 1? If we kept Marshall, he would be our nickel. I think he was set to be paid around 4 mil this yr. To be a nickel back? When we have 2 rookies at the same position? Aren't we paying Grimes 4-5 mil to start? Keeping both Marshall and Patterson at their current salaries would have been both a poor financial and a poor football decision. We need to be able to get the rooks on the field and let them develop. Not too mention that Marshall is mediocre. My enduring memory of him is getting smoked by Holmes in OT in the jets game.
some players don't need to be replaced, the system takes care of that all by itself (Brandon Marshall). Although I'm not sure if you noticed the two wr's we signed in the offseason named Wallace and Gibson? Jake Long's long term days were numbered when we drafted Martin in the 2nd round last year. He was also not a good scheme fit.
Dude last year we had no number one receiver and we paid the price because Ireland did nothing to replace him, this year Long walks whats Ireland's answer, nothing. If you believe no getting a suitable replacement for Long is important you are wrong. This offensive line is so full of holes and I wonder if Tannehill will be able to make it through the season without being injured.

Of course it isn't comforting (though it looks like Patterson could be ready). But, that's all hindsight. When they cut Marshall (which probably was related to cap ramifications as well as potentially not grading well against the other competitors), they had Patterson and Davis (who was playing well) and both were healthy. They also expected Taylor to be back at some point (evidently they still do as they did not put him on PUP or IR). They had 6 CBs (not including Wilson) after the drop to 53. 4 were going to get the bulk of PT early (Grimes, Patterson, Davis, Carroll) with Taylor coming in as the season moved on. But, injuries are injuries. They are unpredictable. Essentially you are arguing for $5 M cap hit, in case 2-3 guys are injured and not ready for the start of the season. The arguments here are all based on hindsight and not reality at the time of the cut.

Marshall did better playing boundary in 2011 than Carroll ever has. Since he got hurt in game 2 last year, it is impossible to know how he'd have played had he stayed healthy all year. To say anyone plays boundary better than Carroll though is damning them with faint praise.
So what? He's the nickel corner, will play about 60% of snaps, and is an injury away from starting for them.
1. It was a definite money move. Anytime you keep mediocrity like Carroll, Stanford or Wilson over Marshall it is totally about money. No disagreement there. 2. I do not agree. Ideally, they would like the 2nd rounder to be healthy enough to be the 3rd corner and playing nickel right now.

As stated earlier in the thread, Marshall was being severely overpaid relative to the market as he was scheduled to make 4.55M this year. With Patterson also contracted to make 4.6M, one of them had to go. (I would have been tempted to ask Patterson to take a pay cut as well). Well, Marshall went through waivers unclaimed and signed with the Chargers three days later. The market determined his worth to be $840k. Less than 20% of what he would have made if he had been retained by the Dolphins. The salary cap means nothing compared to winning this year AG, you win then deal with the cap, not keep yourself from winning b/c of the cap, let the GM worry about that stuff. And the GM is the one ultimately responsible for wins and losses, which is why if this burns us, it falls directly on Ireland's desk.

Do we know whether the Dolphins ever even asked him to rework his contract before cutting him? If they did, it was not reported that I saw. Obviously this move was entirely about money. When your top two corners combine for over a $9.5 mil cap hit, they won't fork over another $4 mil for a 3rd corner. But, let's not pretend we are better from a talent perspective with Nolan Carroll as the 3rd corner. The best thing I can say about him is this the final year of his contract, and next year hopefully he can take his lack of instincts and ball skills to another city. Maybe play for the Iowa Barnstormers or the Edmonton Eskimos.
He was pretty mediocre in Carolina his last season there, perhaps, but to say he sucked in Miami, when he played less than a game and a half before hurting his back, and then gutted it out for another two games before having to shut it down for the season, is pretty short sighted IMO, and the kind of thing one says when it fits their preconceived notions. I really doubt 95% of fans watch more snaps than PFF does, and they say Marshall was fine in coverage in 2011, but inside and outside. He was poor in 2010 in Carolina, but had plus rating in 2009 and 2008 both. I am willing to admit that Marshall is gone because of the size of his contract, but I will never agree based on anything that has happened heretofore that from a talent standpoint we are better off without him and better off with Carroll, Wilson and/or Stanford.

He was fine as a slot corner in 2008 and 2009, yes. He sucked in 2010 as a boundary corner. You want to disagree that he was more of a safety/slot corner than a boundary corner in 2011 that's fine. I'm going to actually believe the guys who've watched his tape in CK and Alen. It makes sense and the numbers support it on PFF. He had a high amount of Slot corner snaps that season. 2012 was a short season for him. But it was bad. Based on his history, I don't think it would have gotten better. Going into this season, I knew either he or Patterson were gone with the winner playing as a slot corner. From what I've seen from Carrol last season, he's acceptable as a boundary corner where as Patterson/Marshall are terrible. Carrol will play until Taylor is hopefully ready soon. In 2011, he had 500 snaps in coverage and 144 in the slot. 144 isn't high. Mike Adams was their main slot corner as for number of snaps. He had a much higher pct of slot snaps in Carolina. PFF had his rated very high in all three of their coverage matrixes both overall and in the slot. The slot snaps were not enough that they'd have offset a bad performance on the outside. Looking at his numbers for coverage snaps per reception, he was better overall than in the slot, 17.9 compared to 13.1 in the slot.
Those numbers may have been numbers as a safety. They may not be as a boundary corner. That was the safety/slot corner thing I was referring to. Almost a third of his coverage snaps were from the slot. Not much but a good amount. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk - now Free
