The Dolphins worked out free agent OG Danny Watkins on Monday.
The Dolphins need guard help. There's been speculation -- fueled by Eagles GM Howie Roseman's recent comments -- that Watkins lacks passion to play football. He's apparently still interested in collecting paychecks, if he's willing to work out for teams. Watkins went unclaimed on waivers Sunday. Sep 2 - 6:13 PM

Born and raised in British Columbia, it was not until the age of 22 that Danny Watkins gave up his stick and his skates for a helmet and shoulder pads. While attending Butte College in Oroville, CA, Watkins first stepped onto a football field as a way to earn a scholarship and quickly established himself as one of the best junior college lineman in the nation, garnering All-America accolades as a sophomore. A first-round selection of the Birds in 2011, Watkins battled injuries in the latter half of the 2012 season after breaking into the Eagles offensive line with 12 starts in his rookie campaign.

I'm speaking of his lack of playing ability on the field. I have seen him enough in Philly to know I don't want him in Miami.

  7. I think with his love for firefighting he might be a better fit with the Heat...

John Jerry could barely make it to the first quarter last Thursday, he's not ready to start so we need somebody to start there.

I remember some of the gurus here really liked him before the 2010 draft. Alen was very vocal in his praise of Watkins as I recall.

I don't think he'd be a bad project at all, regardless of Grossman's unprofessionalism

Roseman seems like a real *** hole. Cannot imagine Ireland opening his pie hole and diss a cut player like that.

No, he just calls their mothers prostitutes.

But in all seriousness, what did Roseman say that was so bad? The only thing I could find was

He might just be a great project for us. And if he's not, so be it...

Watkins played tackle at Baylor and Guard for the Eagles, and the Eagles did not give him much of a chance to play tackle for them even when Peters went down and they sorely needed a tackle.

I don't know if this says more about the Eagles or Watkins, but take it FWIW

    Read the part bolded....

I think Watkins was worth a look but if we dont offer a contract I can understand why. I havent seen much from him yet to indicate hes a starter at the NFL level

Eh, great athlete, things went to crap in Philly so he may have been caught up in that situation.

Didn't they have Howard Mudd maybe 1 yr? Then Reid sort of lost the handle on the Eagles as a whole.

i've changed the title to acknowledge that Watkins might not have had his tryout yet. It might be scheduled for tomorrow.

Watkins did have a tryout with the Dolphins, but Panos said he hadn't yet heard back from Miami.

Not a bad signing (If this is the indeed the case). Hopefully a change of scenery and a new coach will do him good.

We have lots of extra DBs.

We had to do something at right guard. I'm happy to see the level of desperation that this shows. Much better than not realizing the seriousness of the problem.

I have a feeling Yeatman will be cut here... fml... although it should be Don Jones. BTW, until I see a 2nd source on him signing, I will call this unofficial. Jason La Canfloral is well known for sucking.

I hope so, looks like teams just did not want to pick up his rookie #1 pick deal, he MAYBE can play G and Tackle and is a good athlete with upside.

Garner is a FA after this year, perhaps he can step in for Nate, who is the definition of "average".

Besides, his a Canadian, you know Ireland and Canada...

At the least, he is healthy and should be able to either compete with Jerry or provide some depth at RG and maybe tackle. Nothing ventured...

Ready or not, doesn't mean Watkins is a better option. In fact I'd go as far as saying that Jerry is the best option at RG on the team right now whether Watkins is here or not.

Agreed, like the pickup if it is true, but objectively he's behind both Jerry and Garner.

What I do not like about all of this is Roseman takes a swipe, and now the meme has formed that "..he does not have the fire to play in the NFL..."

He has not even practiced in Miami yet.

Ya I dunno about all that. Sometimes a change of venue is just what the doctor ordered to get somebody re-motivated and ready to prove. Or could go the other way, no way to find out but to try it. Any aspiring OG or T that gets a call from Miami HAS to at least believe they have a shot at playing...considering our depth.

That and to me, you just have to see how he handles things in Miami, he has a clean slate to me at least.

It will take some time for him to just learn the linecalls, and in the waiver wire thread it was mentioned he had a concussion 3 weeks ago, so at least give the man some time to adjust etc.

We will see if Miami can salvage Danny Watkins's career. Here's the thing. Many on here are putting him at right guard, and one of the reasons he was cut by Philly is because he did not fit well at right guard. The guy is a natural left sided player. He's a player I liked a lot during the draft, but for whatever reason, he hasn't played well as a pro.

I trust Adam Beasley on this one. He says he called his agent and his agent said the report is untrue. He said if Danny had signed with Miami, as Danny's agent, he'd tend to think he'd know about that...but that Danny had a tryout with Miami and has yet to hear back from them.

It could happen but it hasn't yet.

I don't think the reports are necessarily mutually exclusive. Could be both sides really like each other but the agent doesn't like that they are immediately surrendering any leverage when there are other teams interested.

I keep hearing this. Wondering what people saw in the game, or PFF ratings or whatever to make them say this.

I watched the game and don't remember coming away with this feeling. That said, I didn't key on Jerry.

Jerry was bad in the first game he played this preseason, and did not improve much in the next game.
