I'm on record calling Luck the best prospect I've ever seen, but one knock on him is that he can't make some of the throws that a Tannehill or CKap can. It doesn't make him incapable. It just means that he plays the game differently than those guys do. For example CKap isn't all that good at reading defenses. He tends to see the guy open and then throw it rather than anticipate the opening. Luck anticipates it far better, but he couldn't wait as long as CKap does to pull the trigger. RT is between those two in terms of arm strength and anticipation.

Second batch all the less impressive as they were against 2nd and 3rd string defenders.

File it away that Jake Long has been far worse than Martin, which comes as no surprise, shame to see him head down hill like that so young.

When healthy he was elite. A non-shut down corner does not tally 23 passes defended, 5 INT's, and 87 tackles (2010). Those are very close to the numbers that Darrelle Revis had his breakout (and best) year. Close meaning 33 more tackles and 1 less INT 8 less PDef's. Last season, Richard Sherman tallied one more PDef, 3 more INT's and 23 less tackles. Two more injury free years and Brent Grimes is never a Miami Dolphin.

I'm not sure I'd call anybody outside of Revis a shut-down CB, but I would have no trouble calling Grimes a top 10 CB. In fact, I would say he's top 5. I actually see several top 5 at their position players among our starters. Wake, Grimes, Pouncey and Jones I would certainly put in that group and I might even add Ellerbe. I think that Tannehill Wallace and Miller have the talent to potentially produce in that category but won't for various reasons. RT needs a couple more years of experience to potentially reach that level. Wallace and Miller would need near perfect situations to reach that level as I see their talent as a little lower (relatively). I do think they could produce at top 10 - 15 levels this season.

Jake Long has been ordinary in every offense except Hennings

The injury excuse is just that. An excuse. Ireland made the right call this offseason

IMO Ireland offered Long way too much. I thought Ireland was fortunate that Long chose St. Louis.

Revis isn't even the best CB in the game right now. Richard Sherman says, hello.

    I
Top 10 isn't unreasonable. Top 5 is a possibility, but I'm not giving it to him just yet.

I could see Wallace bing top 10. That speed and deep threat ability is only rivaled by Megatron. Obviously he's not as complete, but Wallace is still a big playmaker none the less.

I would add Starks to the top 10 list. Prior to his mother's failing health, he was doing work. Actually, he's done work ever since coming to Miami. Also, highly flexible with his ability to play DT in the 4-3 and DE in the 3-4. The former suiting him best, however.

Starks and Soilai are a top 5 tandem against the run. And with Odrick kicking inside, Starks/Odrick might just be a top 5 tandem against the pass too.

Hopefully, Dion Jordan joins this conversation sooner rather than later.

According to PFF this preseason, among all OTs, Martin is 2nd overall and Jake is 152nd.

Damn Saints appear to have struck gold with Terron Armstead. Rookie 3rd round LT and ranked 6th overall. 80 snaps, no sacks, no hits, one hurry. Their UDFA from 2012 RT, Bryce Harris has 95 snaps at RT, and allowed none of all 3 categories and is ranked the 1st overall OT. Neither of them are the starters either. Wonder if Jeff would have taken Armstead rather than Dallas if he'd been on the board.

Martin could finish this season #1 and I bet LB would still be talking about it as a blown Ireland pick ;p

The Saints' Bryce Harris has 95 snaps at RT, and allowed none of all 3 categories, sacks, hits, hurries, and is ranked the 1st overall OT.

Funny how his struggles and PFF numbers were national news, but now his achievements and those same numbers aren't.

The one thing Revis has had is longevity as a top CB not in terms of reputation, but in actual play on the field. CBs have been so devalued that you see guys named as a top CB, but then be pretty average. That's why I'm hesitant to elevate CBs to the top spot.

I debated putting Starks in the top 5 potential group. He certainly has played at a top 5 level, but having not seen anything of him this preseason I hesitated. But top 10 seems fair, potentially of course.

Agreed about Jordan. He certainly has top 5 talent. It may take a while for him to realize it especially if they have him trying to be an all-around type DE/LB too soon, but I expect that at some point in his career he'll be in the Def player of the year conversation.

Somebody on that staff really knows how to get the most out of their offensive lineman, I mean, how many mid-round picks has that team transformed into pro-bowlers? The responsibility of taking care of one of the better QB's in the game probably factors into their motivation, too.

Or Brees gets the ball out of his hand so quickly their numbers look better.

This is always overlooked when discussing LT's.

I don't think Starks belongs near the top 5, or even top 10. Outside of his breakout year(which was what, 2009 or 2010?) he's been quite inconsistent, and will have dominant games and streaks but just as often he'll be in a funk where he's very average. He's not that great a run defender, either.

I'm hoping the Dolphins don't go in to the 2014 off-season with the idea that Randy Starks and Paul Soliai are the centerpieces of the defense, because they're both quite replaceable and even upgrade-able.

Agreed. Much of the struggles in building our OL has been b/c we haven't had the QB that makes the decisions quick enough to make them look good. Really other than CP that one year, we haven't had one since Marino. If RT develops you'll see that suddenly our OL will be considered very good.

I'm guessing they let Starks walk. Then the starters are Soliai and Odrick, with Kheeston being the main sub.

That'd seem to be the way it's looking. Wouldn't be mad about that at all. It's still a spot I might try and address with a lower-level free agent or low round draft pick, a la Randall, come next offseason.

I think they should strongly consider letting both walk, with an eye towards Odrick as the 3 and an acquisition/Randall as the 1.

I feel like that is too bold.

Then again, they did jettison Burnett and Dansby. I'd also say that Soliai and Starks are better at their jobs then Dansby and Burnett were at their jobs though.

Generally, that speed of decision making is very dependent on experience. I've found that all players get faster with more experience, although obviously the rate of improvement and the top speed they can/do ultimately reach are highly individualized.

AH YES the sunshine pumpers out in force . Look people back during Sparano 's second year most folks were able to see thru the jive about the fins except Miami fans. if other teams can draft olinemen but we cant then that is a sign that our gm is the problem .

I want to win really bad but I 'm not going to pretend that we are better then what we are just to make another fin fan happy .

one the flip side I like the directon we are heading on defense one more draft should help us there.

I have never liked Ireland and never will because as long as he is picking the talent we wont win more then 8 games.

I say this because we have had offensive line issues ever since the trifecta came and it should never take a decade to build a team let alone a oline.

yes its preseason but other teams that are contenders are looking the part but Miami on offense look the same ole same and like it or not that s the truth .

I hope I am wrong but this year has the makings of a repeat of the 04 season . I hope we can win and I hope I am wrong but there s a feel to this team that don't feel right and it is the oline and no star runningback or tightend and polease don't give me our young guys will be fine because fine wont win above .500 let alone a playoff game.

I know some will throw a hissy fit but we just don't have any stand outs except Wallace . Hartlne , is just a average at best wr I think we need another wr and tightend and three more olnemen then we will be rockin and rolling but it never should take this long to rebuild and look at other teams they have bounced back and the Dolphins are still floating around. and that isn't gloom or doom its the facts and it should tell you how god or bad we will be and the Bengals , Tampa Bay and some others already have shown signs in the preseason Yes the dolphins have shown some signs but it sure looks like the oline is the same as last years .

On defense we may be ok there so I'M not too concerned there but what about special teams and what happened if the young wrs and olinemen don't help us enough to win ?
the only wr that is impressive is Wallace but he needs more then a potential wr like Hartline .
