I didn't say he sucks. I said he isn't on the same level as Dion Jordan as a prospect. DJ's ceiling is higher and the impact he can create is greater.
I agree with this. I do think back to last year and you certainly see signs of him being very, very talented. I remember two throws to Davone Bess, against Oakland and Arizona, where his placement was impeccable. Same with his throw to Bush in the second Bills game. He also had, IMO, one of his better games against the Seahawks in that comback (you have to forgive the INT that got called back). I also think he only had 3 total turnovers in that 6 game stretch to close the year, and that included the Patriots twice, Seattle, and San Francisco. I'm comfortable with him moving into this year based on those throws and his performances in those games. Of his 13 INTs, 6 of them came in two games (Houston, Tennessee). I think he he becomes more decisive and doesn't make bad decisions on the run, which is something I think CK hit nail on head on Twitter, he can certainly lead Miami to 10 or 11 wins. I think you could realistically expect 3,800 - 4,000 yards, 18 TDs, 10 INTs. IMO, that's a nice improvement from last year, and hopefully, that's a conservative estimate on my part. I also think we'll see improvement as the preseason progresses once the coaching staff settles on an OL. The one bad day of practice where he had 3 picks, and the brief viewing in the HOF game have sent everyone into a (negative) tizzy. All of Tannehill's TDs from 2012: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JCIo3QhXc6k Some of the throws in there are pretty nice. The one to Bess from the first Bills game. The one to Fasano against San Francisco. The 2pt conversion to Fasano against Jacksonville. Clearly, there's talent behind those throws. I think people need to give this kid a chance and really see what he can do.
I am a Tannehill glass-half-full guy, but your 2nd statement implies that he will become either the first or 2nd best QB in the league. Given A Rodgers youth, that means RT will be right behind him and ahead of everyone else. I just don't see it. His future, IMO, is top ten QB. We will be pretty psyched if he reaches that level
I wanted Miami to draft him SO bad...would've required some movement iirc, but I was high on that guy like no other (granted I've not paid attention to several drafts).
flacco, as much as a nonbeliever as I've been, could turn out to be as disrespected and later respected, as Eli. We'll see, but good post. stoopid.
What jumps out to me: of the 7 TDs he threw from around the 5yd line, 5 of them came on designed rollouts. I know deej keeps bringing this up as a strength of his and a necessity because of our OLine, and the coaches seem to agree that moving the pocket down on the goalline raises his success rate. Is 5/7 alot compared to other pro offenses, or are rollouts generally more common in tight fields with mobile QBs?
I prefer it because he has the option to tuck it and make a play, using a pump fake is very effective down there if the receiver isn't open, however it cuts off half the field in terms of progressions..I like the rollout option with a Qb that has athleticism because if your dropping him strait back pressure is usually an issue in that area, and to me the rollout decreases the odds of a turnover.. To me a moving pocket should be stressed by Sherman for the upcoming season..caters to his strengths, and helps our biggest weakness which is protection.
http://espn.go.com/blog/afceast/post/_/id/62327/dolphins-film-review-ryan-tannehill Decent write-up after film-review of Jags game.
After watching the game, I saw some missed chances for Tannehill. I don't like that he escapes the pocket, rather than stepping up in it. The interior didn't play great but I thought Tannehill created a lot of pressure himself with impatience. Hopefully they can build off that last TD.
I wonder if we saw some hesitation from Tannehill because of timing issues, that is he still isnt used to throwing to the new guys?
I'm going to have a little faith Sherman knows what he's talking about, when he says Tanny will be the most improved 2nd year QB. Since he came out and said it with a high amount of confidence, anything less would be a disappointment.
My hope is that RT has a Schaub type year, 4000 yds and 22/12. His ceiling is higher than that, but I think he's very capable of that at this point.
My thoughts, RT looked good for the 2nd game of preseason new receivers and a revamped oline. My opinion, doesnt mean squat
That also seems pretty fair. And if he does hit that, then you're looking a pretty nice jump from year one to year two.
I'd have to see numbers of other QBs to know whether or not that's a higher percentage. But, as DJ says, and I agree with him, if rolling Tannehill out and/or utilizing moving pockets helps Tannehill. Do it. Use him the way Denver used to use Jake Plummer, and I think Tannehill certainly has the skillset to do that. The one thing I'd be wary of with that, is as CK pointed out, for whatever reason, Tannehill seems to "short circuit" for lack of a better term as he gets close to the sideline and tries to throw it. He almost threw a pick on Friday against the Jaguars, and I immediately thought of that pick-6 he threw against the Jets last year. He just needs to learn when to throw it away or just run it out of bounce and live to fight another down. It's somewhat baffling, but I think that's also the sign of a still maturing QB.
I have little faith in Sherman. We are all hoping EJ Manuel sucks. We need everyone to suck, that's where our faith is.
I'm a Tannehill fan, and I think he can be something someday. But I do also think that he may need another year before he really ascends to that level. Towards the end of this season, I expect the light to go off. Whether it is enough to get into the playoffs or not, remains to be seen. I don't think he trusts his line right now as others have said because he bailed early on a few drop backs and even though he does okay on the run, rowing off balance generally isn't a practice you want to do too often. He seems comfortable early with Keller and I noticed Dion Sims staying in as a blocker on a few plays, including the TD throw. It wouldn't surprise me if we end up doing more two tight end sets with a single set back in the early downs, and an empty backfield with three wideouts and two tight ends on third and obvious passing downs. The extra blocker staying in to help protect Tannehill and possibly able to bleed out as a safety valve, could be huge for Ryan's confidence to hang in the pocket.
Getting your wish so far http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/2013/8/11/4611578/nfl-preseason-2013-e-j-manuel-bills-colts
Means nothing. The kid is an untalented heaping pile of poo as far as QB skills go. Wait until defenses start gameplanning for him.
I don't think he was hesitating FF, he didn't have time to hesitate ya know?...the only way he's gonna get any reps with Wallace deep is if he moves the pocket himself and resets...he's just not getting nearly enough time to relax his feet, see the deep receiver clearly and throwing with a sense of touch or power..throwing deep is difficult because you have to have the time, and you have to be able to truly see your target to be accurate, if your throwing to a spot or area of the fieldmyour fooked, and unless your not distracted in the pocket, there's no way to be accurate.
Let's have a film session on passing game:
We have Ryan Tannehill, our future is tied to him, for a few years anyway, we have a HC and OC that agreed with our GM that Tannehill is a diamond in the rough. He has way too little experience, his OL is giving him poor protection, his running game isn't exactly scaring any defenses YET, and it was only the 2nd game of the PREseason. In ways it was treated much like the first game of preseason. To make judgments on Tannehill beyond this game is strictly conjecture and IMHO doesn't belong in this thread, at least from what Deej says the premise of the thread was. Flacco doesn't play here, he has WAY more games under his belt at the QB position, why are we comparing these two? What's the value in that? Based on ONLY the Jags game, Tannehill is still tentative, still not reading defenses well, but is showing some of the promise we all are looking for once he got "rolling". The two passes to Keller were solid, and alone could change how defenses have to play us. Having a seam threat go-to TE like Keller will likely open up Wallace, Hartline and Gibson which can keep defenses from stacking the line, opening up the running game. What Tanny did show Friday night was the ability to be accurate and change up a pass from a zip-line spiral to a floating duck when it was more appropriate to Keller in the end zone. sadly that raises the question: was the TD pass intentionally thrown that way? if so, WOW, if not, we don't know more than we've got a great TE that may help Tanny in similar situations. I think we've surrounded Tanny with some talent and depth at WR, TE, & RB that, given the OL comes together, could elevate Tanny's game. I honestly think Tanny needs another season to become the "elite" QB we all hope for. I'm predicting a 9-7 record this year and if we do better IMHO it will be because we have an "elite" top 1-2 Defense. I'd be happy with that, especially if it gives Tanny the time to develop his game and take it/us to another level. But none of that came from the Jags game, just like most of the posts in this thread. But we all have the right to our opinions, especially on these pages/threads. The above are mine and I am totally responsible for their content.
I'm considering his whole body of work so far in establishing my expectations for his season this year. And like I've stated several times, I expect a 15 QBR increase, several more TDs and same or less INTs (maybe a few more INTs if WAY more TDs...I could certainly live with that). I think he has the juice, but I'm not sure he'll really take off until after the bye, which could put us back a bit, but as an optimistic fan, I'm still going to say we go at LEAST 2-3 before the bye...maybe even 3-2. Some may say "you're a homer and you're on crack, nothing they've shown thus far says we'll win before the bye" and I think that's a bit over-dooming and pessimistic, sorry. This coaching staff has shown me more than any we've had since Shula. I trust 'em.
I expect 2-3 and would be very pleased with 3-2. IMO, this defense is good enough to win football games. If the CBs step up where they simply could not last year, along with ellerbe and wheeler bringing some speed to the ILB positions, we should have great squad out there. Another reason to be hopeful for tanny is all these new guys on defense HAVE to be better at creating turnovers (they can't possibly be worse), which should give him for more opportunities than a year ago. Im an optimist though. Well not in real life...but with football i am.
And WHEN we get to the playoffs, I want the Ravens...they've knocked us out the last 2 times, by the same score, iirc...would love to return the favor!
When 1/3 of the starters is considered elite I think the term elite loses it's shine a bit. To me, elite is just that, elite. There may be 1 member. There may be 3-5. But it's not top-5 or top-10. Those are ... wait for it ... Top 5, or Top 10. For years there was Manning, Brady and everyone else. Favre was off his rocker. Brees threw a lot of TDs but INTs as well. Rodgers wasn't playing yet and then the first two years was damn good, not elite. Roethlisberger was winning but wasn't as good as Manning or Brady. For a few years, there was Manning and Brady and then everyone else. If you called the top 10 elite, you would lump everyone in the same cat as Brady and Manning and that makes no sense. Granted, you are entitled to define elite however the hell you want. Just my 2 cents on the word.
Tannehill is still relatively inexperienced and still has a long way to go. I like the kid. He shows great promise, but like a lot of young QBs, he relies too much on his arm strength and doesn't always use the proper mechanics that will serve him better over the course of his career. On that throw into the endzone to Keller, Tannehill was trotting to his right away from the pressure, saw the opportunity to hit Keller for the TD and and fired by jumping into the air to throw it. I have the picture frozen on my TV atm. That throw was all arm and was the reason it appeared to be a wounded duck. Despite what he does this season, and I think he'll be improved, I agree that next season is when he really comes into his own.
you have made us all laugh a lot over the years Sam, but I also enjoy when you talk football like that, sexy kind of.
