The problem is with the 2nd WC many more teams say what you want are realistically in it...and there is 8 weeks left....they said something like 8 of 30 teams are officially eliminated, that's it!! Take yourself out of NYY or BOS or TB shoes for a minute KC is only 5 games out of the WC, they were buyers at the deadline, think about that....5 games can be made up in 8 weeks (ask the Sox)...what does this all mean? Much less selling, much less..... Two remedies......one baseball can do, and one teams can do...... 1) Teams can and should be stacking their minor leagues with depth (looking at you Oppemheimer, Cashman) 2) Baseball should push back the trade deadline to mid August....to create more sellers....
No, I completely understand and agree, but also, the Yankees seem to be prospect huggers, but then they never let them play and end up trading them in the long run anyway. If you are going to play with fire and get burned, you might as well try and make the team better now. I'm not dumb to the fact that not every team can have a run like the yankees have had and there is always going to be a downturn in talent. However, i would be happy to see the youth get on the field and play....let them take their bumps and bruises, but let them develop. Im not opposed to a "rebuilding process". But, i want them to pick a direction and stick with it.
Of course you're also lessening the return you get from a buyer by lessening the impact that the newly acquired players have with their new team. I think it might take a few years but teams will start figuring out if they're out of it earlier on.
I told my dad last night that if Kuroda pitched yesterday the Yankees would have won 1-0. Only negative was they would have lost today. Everyone said yanks wont win with Kershaw pitching. When I found out Kuroda was I liked out chances.
Yeah wonderful gift for Mariano as well..... A fishing rod??? I bet he would have taken some of that good LA smog instead of a fishing rod...
True, there's a whole give and take with it really. Of course the smarter teams that are out of it would still trade off their assets in July. Some of things that didn't happen made zero sense to me yesterday. I mean how in the world do the Mets not trade someone like Byrd, who was ready to retire in the spring if he didn't make the team? Even if they weren't in love with the C or D level prospect they were getting back at least they get a body for him. Seattle, Colorado, Toronto, SF and even the Cubs with some of their other spare parts did nothing. I really don't get it.
Alot of teams i think made mistakes. The White Sox were asking for the world for anyone and the ended up getting pretty much nothing. The Phillies could have made a ton of moves and did nothing. The Padres bought low on Kennedy which i think was brilliant. Toronto should have moved players and did nothing.
yes it was definitely weird yesterday....Mets were getting killed on the FAN for not trading yesterday...
Another thing as to why a lot of deals weren't done is because teams are in love with their prospects, right or wrong. Especially with MLB salaries rising and with PED testing, it's getting to be more and more a younger/cheaper game. So teams are more willing to hang onto their prospects, while paying them the MLB minimum, then risk a Beltran for Wheeler deal.
The landscape is definitely changing....less players are making it to free agency as well, teams are signing and keeping there players alla Longo in say Tampa.... Honest question, would you as a GM be nervous giving Cano a big year contract?? He is 31 this October....However 2 things I worry about with Cano, is he really 30? and PEDs..... Sterotypes for Dominicans? sure but that's the really of ballplayers coming out of that Country right now....I am hella worried if they sign this cat to a 7 year deal and in year 3 some PED thing comes out on him creating A-Rod 2.0....just being honest... Thoughts?
I would be worried about giving any player already in his 30s a big contract. But I do think you need to take each player and treat it individually with regards to each franchise. In Cano's case, he is a damn good hitter and a very good defensive 2B. Like Pedroia, players like that tend to age better. The problem with the Yankees is you let Cano walk and then what? Who replaces him? I think the Yankees need to resign Cano and will because if they lose him they have no internal replacement ready and nor is there anyone in the FA market that could replace him. Of course that doesn't mean you pay him at any cost. Pedroia just got 7 for 100 or so? So the Yankees should offer Cano something like 7 for $115 million that way you make him the highest paid 2B in the MLB. I think that's a more than fair offer to him. And Cano's bat plays extremely well at YS and even if he loses a step or two in his mid to late 30s he could probably handle 1B or DH. So while it wouldn't be ideal to give him a 7 year deal, I think he's someone you take the gamble on especially due to his position and his bat. I wouldn't worry about the PED stuff and you have to assume that Cano is telling the truth about his age as there is no evidence to think he's lying.
When they implemented the 2nd wildcard a lot of people talked about how there would be less selling. Simply because more teams are still in it.
Same with the Marlins and guys like Qualls, Polanco, JP, etc. The only explanation I've heard that makes some sense is that, they were basically getting offered nothing, so rather than take whatever lowball offers you were getting, you establish that you're not going to just give away talent and maybe in the future you get a better offer for your next Byrd, or Qualls, or whoever, bcause GM's around the league have seen that you're not going to just sell to sell. So if it's theoretically some C- RP spec (and let's face it, every organization has like 15+ of these guys) versus the chance of a greater return for someone else down the road, I could maybe get behind that thought process.
Scully said it was A reference to Mariano following in his father's footsteps(A fisherman by trade) and finally getting to Fish. Also, can CAshman come out and tell showalter to STFU. He's complaining that the Yankees are being let off the hook for Arod's contract. If I remember correctly this guy Coached Arod in his admitted PED years and turned A blind eye. Suck It, Buck!
I mean I guess it that thought process makes some sense, not sure I would agree with it 100% though. I still think it makes sense to get a warm body back in a deal and who knows maybe 1 out 10 of them can give you from value at the MLB level.
Awesome I take back everything I said.....didn't realize that aspect of it......thanks!!! And Showalter wakes up and goes to bed with the Yankees on his mind, he still isnt over being fired by them....all he ever does is talk about them.....Sox too....yeah Buck thats it they want Wieters.... Rememeber when he bashed Jeter? and said Theo isnt smart.....
I feel like Buck, Carl Crawford, Adrian Gonzalez and Bobby Valentine should go to group therapy together to talk about their former employers together.
I really think A-Rod is just delusional at this point.....at first I thought he was just playing the game, but he actually believes everything he says...like he doesn't know at this point there is no way they can void his contract? What is he talking about, the guy was ripping PED's like a madman in the ALCS last year!!!!
The guy plays Friday then after the game he has a presser where he basically embarrasses himself badly, those quotes I posted above where just some....He went from almost crying, to talking about being happy to be back when asked about his suspension, to the end which was what I posted....Throwing shots at the Yankees and MLB around without any proof of anything, unlike MLB who is quiet with all the evidence. Anyway he does that THEN goes to the team and asks for a buyout settlement for the rest of his contract and NY tells him it is out of their hands at this point, they cant interfere with MLB and what they are doing...AFTER THAT he goes to MLB and asks to negotiate a deal on the punishment at which time after the lastest round of uncalled for shot taking MLB told him that window was closed even though MLB gave him until today to decide....He has thoroughly pissed MLB off at this point.....It sucks because I think the Yanks wanted a buyout all along and he asked them for it, they have their chance....not sure if they are telling the truth or not about they cant do anything about it....
I read that he won't be able to play even through the appeal process, so it's a win for the Yankees if he loses since he wouldn't have played for them. If he wins, arod wins
All old jokes aside, I think this really should be a cause of concern moving forward with Jeter. Not sure he'll be able to handle playing SS everyday moving forward with all these leg injuries.
You guys actually pay attention to A-Rod? The guy has been a paria since the day he donned pinstripes. I don't know many Yankees fans that have ever embraced him. Can't wait until he's gone. When the Yankees re-signed him I cringed. We had a chance to get away from him and like a someone Ina bad relationship we didn't. If we as an organization do not learn from this we're in deep **** in the foreseeable future.
It doesn't matter he is gone.......it is his swan song....they should have been trying to find his replacement already...
He's still going to be on the 2014 roster and getting paid, it's going to be a potential problem. The Yankees do have his replacement it's Eduardo Nunez, don't you listen when Cashman and Girardi talk about it? Seriously though, as far as a replacement for him good luck. There's not a whole lot out there unless you want Stephen Drew.
Pineda shut down again due to shoulder soreness. Could that go down as one of the worst trades ever in terms of lack of production from Montero (who's also looking to get a PED suspension today) and Pineda?
