A little disturbing how easy Dion got behind Martin, he really didnt do much on both of the sacks to get past a left tackle..I couldn't see the handwork up close, but I didnt see a lot of it to get past him..

Linebackers can't tackle in practice and therefore tailbacks can't show how well they finish runs in practice. Guys like Gray and Marshall need scrimmages and games to show what they've got. Similarly you go back to the linebackers and you need these settings to see a Lee Robinson make a play or two. Sometimes this also affects pass rushers, especially smaller more explosive guys like Cameron Wake whose ability to finish is what separates him from the pack. (hoping this doesn't open up 80 consecutive posts bytching about anything/everything Omar Kelly says)
random... Why do I have a feeling Egnew will be released and then picked up by the Pats? He will, of course, thrive in that offense.

LOL I think we just naturally have that fear about everyone. The more likely division opponent to pick Egnew up though would be the Jets who already did that with Clyde Gates. Clyde isn't thriving of course but they did actually play him against us. The Jets currently have Jeff Cumberland, Kellen Winslow (yup, still playing), Konrad Reuland, Mike Shanahan Jr., Hayden Smith, Chris Pantale and Dedrick Epps at the position. Judging from that, they like receiver types with questionable blocking skills. I was a fan of Jeff Cumberland's coming out. I had him as a late round pick or UDFA and he made my list (which was about 80 strong, that year) of guys I would target. He's their top tight end. If they like Jeff Cumberland that much I have no doubt they'd love to get their hands on Michael Egnew. Cumberland has Egnew's weaknesses but isn't as natural a pass catcher.

I think I like the idea of Dmitri Patterson starting opposite Grimes. Interior corners usually rely on quicks and instinct to cover short areas. I haven't done a single viewing of Patterson but if that describes him I'm comfortable with him in zone. I've advocated getting rid of both Patterson and Marshall but if Patterson is good, he has one more year I believe, so cutting Marshall works and we'll have two corners going into their third years when Patterson's contract is up. If I remember correctly the night ended on the field in the goal line drills with Davis making an Int.in the end zone. Don't remember much from him otherwise.

I noticed Jonas Gray quite often last night, thought he was one of the nice surprises of the evening. What also stood out to me was for only being 5' 9" tall, the guy looks BIG. Kid's gotta have some serious build/muscles on him, and at that height can run low to the ground. What stood out to me last night at the scrimmage was his finishing as well. (Oh darn, I just agreed with Omar on something )
I think just generally speaking the red zone and close to the end zone is where you see Ryan Tannehill light up. I've always considered him a major touchdown threat from close to the end zone, since before he came out. I once posted a study of the percentage of plays inside the 10 yard line that various quarterbacks convert into touchdowns. Ryan Tannehill I believe was highest in his class, unless you start counting some of the lower tier quarterback prospects like Darron Thomas and Kellen Moore. It could be a coincidence that Tannehill looked lackluster during regular scrimmage time but then started lighting up when he got inside the red zone and near the goal line...but I'm not so sure. It would be nice if he became one of those guys that could punch the ball into the end zone from up close at a premium rate (40+ percent). Drew Brees is the creme de la creme near the goal line, if you're wondering. His three year running average is 44%. Aaron Rodgers, Peyton Manning, Josh Freeman, Carson Palmer and Matt Ryan are pretty tight on his heels though, all at 42% (counting Peyton's last three years of playing football). Believe it or not Christian Ponder is at 40% for his two years in the league. Tom Brady is at 38%. Matt Schaub is at 37%. Matt Stafford and Tony Romo are at 35% but both are real jerky running averages, inconsistent. Matt Cassel was at a more consistent 35%. Phil Rivers and Mark Sanchez are at 34%. Ben Roethlisberger and Ryan Fitzpatrick are at 33%. Eli Manning is at 32%. Jake Locker is at 32% over his two years but at a very low number of reps. Kevin Kolb is also at 32% with also a low number of reps, though higher than Locker. Michael Vick is at 31%. Cam Newton is at 30% over the last two years. Jay Cutler and Sam Bradford are at 29%. Andy Dalton is at 28% for his last two years. Blaine Gabbert is at 27% for his two years. Joe Flacco and Alex Smith are at 26% for the last three. Russell Wilson was at 43.5%, one reason I fawn over him so heavily. Andrew Luck was a pretty spectacular 43% himself despite some heavy disadvantages. Robert Griffin was at 42%, also very good. Colin Kaepernick was at 32% this year. Ryan Tannehill was at a low 28% but between the lack of weapons and a few plays that I really felt were bad breaks (drops, etc)...don't know if that's representative. Would like to see a lot more reps.
Did not having wallace or hartline have anything to do with Tanny looking "lackluster" or does not having your top 2 targets have any bearing on the first scrimmage of camp?
He already commented a bit when they checked into camp. He gave Gray the "nicest body among tailbacks" award.
Talked about it a couple weeks ago.. dude has excellent genetics,one of the best position specific bodies on the team..I couldn't tell much about his running ability from the video though, I would think a 3.5 average that most of our backs had is pretty good against our defense, they were swarming last nite.
Yeah the guys I compared him to a lot that way were Thomas Jones and Shonn Greene. Maurice Drew is a little smaller. He came out only 5'7" and 209 lbs. Thomas Jones came out about 5'10" and 216 lbs but he played in the NFL more about 220 lbs. Shonn Greene was only half an inch taller than 5'10" and was a solid 227 lbs. Jonas Gray is only a quarter inch shy of 5'10" and was 223 lbs when he came out.
I don't know much about going after averages with any of the players between Miller, Thomas, Gillislee or Gray. Too few carries. Think you have to focus more on individual plays and what you thought they showed. Seemed like Gillislee really impressed that way last night, showed some good vision and quickness. Jonas Gray also seemed to impress with his power. So I would say, whatever the averages were doesn't matter, those two probably had the best performances overall...minus the fumble from Gillislee.
yeah I just couldn't tell from the backs what was really happening to make an assessment on any of their games..there were defenders pulin up in the hole at times..

Did you happen to notice what blue jersey it was that got taken from the right side of the line all the way to the left side of the line in the backfield to where he rolled up all over that left tackle? The legend continues. LOL.
Les Brown laughs at that blocking technique. I reckon Eggnew wants to see if he can take those blocking bags used in practice out for preseason games to use... or he can throw medicine balls at the feet of oncoming defenders. There has to be some loophole to the rules that he can use.
