At the 5:30ish mark, Philbin mentioned that they've been working Vaughn Martin at DE and said they'd get Jared Odrick outside still in camp. So, it appears that philosophy of having a bigger DE is still there. Philbin mentioned that teaching guys multiple jobs is something they want to do because you can only take 46 guys to the game. The more jobs a guy can fill, the more apt he is to be active.

I could certainly see it where Miami might want to have Odrick playing DE as a 5/6 technique, and they can move him inside when necessary and Olivier Vernon plays in other situations at DE as dictated by personnel groupings, etc. Disgustipate had a really nice point about this earlier in the summer.

Coming out, I saw Egnew as substandard in most areas of his game except as a receiver. As a receiver, I saw him as decent, but unlikely to be special. I rated his receiving upside as something less than Keller. He could make the great play, but would never be consistently great. So I wasn't surprised by the reported catch today, but my excitement is muted. It fits in with my expectations of his ability. If he continues to make those plays consistently once the pads come on and in the preseason games, then I will have to reassess my evaluation.

Not good. Chris Perkins reports that Jamar Taylor was seen limping halfway through practice, later carrying a bag of ice (although nobody witnessed where he put the bag) and never practiced again after being seen limping.

Are Starks and Soliai rotating? I wonder if there is any chance Soliai is cut. Would save nearly $6M in cap space.

I don't think there's any chance that happens. It appears the Dolphins have wised up and decided to go with a healthy three-man rotation at that spot. In Chris Perkins' report he said the trio looked the best of any unit at any position.

The Dolphins would be wise to carry that into the season and stop muddying things up with Jared Odrick as damn near a full time defensive end. Let Olivier Vernon take over that spot. It's a good spot for him. He's an athletic run stopper you can pair opposite Cameron Wake, and when you need the extra pass rush you can sub in Dion Jordan.

I think his top potential would be a 5 to 7 sack season, as a starter.

Interesting that Vernon is doing well against Martin... is that him doing well or Martin doing poorly?

Obviously would hurt losing a decent player, but I just don't see Soliai worth the money he's being paid. I am probably in the minority, but didn't think he played that well last season.

    1. I think his best position in sub packages may be defensive tackla, a la Wallace Gilberry.

    2. Currently Dimitri Patterson, Dion Jordan and Jared Odrick would come on the field for Koa Misi, Olivier Vernon and Paul Soliai.

    3. If Wheeler or Ellerbe would come off for sub packages I believe Wheeler is more likely than Ellerbe.

    4. To me if you've got Olivier Vernon, Cameron Wake and Dion Jordan on the field at the same time, then Jared Odrick is probably your one true DT on the field and I would look at Vernon to either rush the B gap or drop back in a zone. You could have Dion Jordan on the same side and he could also either rush the outside or drop back in a zone. I like sending 8 men into coverage. It often confuses teams more than sending 5 or 6 men in on pass rush.

I disagree with this a lot. There are some teams that he won't play well against, but there are other teams that would take advantage of you if you don't have him there to muck up the middle.

The Dolphins would strongly regret letting him go and it wouldn't surprise me if they're thinking the other way, extending him.

Bingo. The guy has done everything right. He's the kind of model you want to hold up for younger players. He came into the league sloppy, didn't really 'get it' and then he came along and now he's actually helping younger guys stay in shape during the off season.

I totally agree CK...and while he was a bit sloppy/immature coming into the league, you have to keep in mind that it takes a few years for a guy to learn that 3/4 NT spot to become as effective as he can...I'm very happy with Soliai now and think that he's got to be a priority to re-sign, much moreso than Starks...

The games he got his *** kicked are the games that he was needed most, against quality offensive lines and run games. That's where a space-eater has the biggest opportunity to make a difference, and he doesn't really.

You're paying a high price for a guy who isn't great, paying a premium for a 2-gap guy when you don't need one, and you're doing so at a position where there are low-cost, high-turnover veterans on the market almost every year.

Yeah, but more accurately describing Soliai's career path would involve him coming from looking like a never-was, kicking *** for one year, and then regressing back to average, not starting slow and becoming good.

What I like most is the versatility. Our nickel could be a traditional 4-2-5, or a 3-3-5, a 2-4-5 or maybe even a 1-5-5 with Wake, Jordan, Vernon, Ellerbe and Wheeler all on the field. Might be 3 comin, might be 5 might be 7, who knows? The offense sure as hell won't.

I don't think he ever looked like a 'never was'. If so, they wouldn't have stuck with him. Look at the history of the really good 3/4 NTs and it usually takes a few years to develop...even guys like Ted Washington and Sam Adams weren't much until their 5th or 6th year... It's the nature of that position....The only one I can think of that had little to no development time has been Ngata. Even Wilfork took 2-3 yrs to grow into the position...

San Francisco and especially the second Patriots game. PFF has him with the Buffalo game being a bad one, but I'm not so sold on it myself. Either way, both of those games were right in his wheelhouse too.

Mr Reliable. Im interested to see if Devlin suddenly makes an impact. Matt Moore is solid. I'd say we have most probably best 1-2 QB depth in the league.

This was exactly my thought. Work Odrick in at a 3 DT rotation (which would be great as it would keep those guys fresh and they all are solid players that bring different skill sets). Maybe give him occasional DE snaps for a bigger line look. Then let Vernon and Jordan and Misi have a mix rotation on the right side.

I won't say Jordan will be the equivalent of an Aldon Smith, but I like him in a similar role as a rookie. Smith did not start a single game his rookie season but was basically a pass rush specialist. That would be great for Jordan.

I also think Vernon will bring a bit more pass rush than ppl expect this year.

Oh, absolutely- It's a slow-maturing position. A lot of college guys don't have 2-gap experience, and there's a whole lot of stuff that comes with experience at that position unless you are just profoundly physically talented beyond just "strong".

My point is, Soliai has regressed. He had a breakout year in 2010, and hasn't really played up to it since. He's been solid but unspectacular. The problem with that is he's getting paid for that higher level of play.

It's not unreasonable to expect a better pass rusher for the money even if he was.

Disagree. Skip believes every single thing he says. it is his special delusion. Ever read his Cowboys book? The guy is a professional troll (that actually believes what he says) and doesn't know anything else.

Omar Kelly is just a boob.

The guy spent 3 hours after game 3 "asking" for Heat fans to "admit" that it was clear that the Spurs were the better team. He had at least a couple hundred people make fun of him, and he just ignored them.

Egnew has history working against him. Chase Coffman and that Rucker guy had solid college careers and flamed out. Missouri tight ends seem to not work in the NFL.
