I'm not sure they are real big on promoting guys for self-esteem reasons. He's earned it, either be it in the context of being a much better player or at least doing the stuff they've wanted from him in the limited context this off-season.
I don't think that's it. I think something that is not followed or talked about very much is Charles Clay's disappointing season. Unlike Egnew, he actually got chances. He just didn't produce with them. His being screamed at by Mike Sherman in Hard Knocks was overshadowed by Egnew's because Egnew's was much more epic, but Clay followed that up by making a lot of what I would think are assignment mistakes on the film. It seemed like they kept struggling trying to get him involved during the season. I think there's some frustration there. Easy to see the signing of a Dustin Keller as replacing Anthony Fasano who departed in free agency, and easy to see the drafting of young guy Dion Sims as an indictment on fresh young guy Michael Egnew...and I'm sure Clay himself kind of sees things this way. Perhaps he underestimated Egnew a little bit based on what happened last year, and just didn't reach out and grab this off season in quite the same way Egnew appears to have with his MMA training and attempt to pack on muscle. I think the coaches are right now rewarding that effort. But if you really look at it, Dion Sims is obviously very similar to Anthony Fasano, and Dustin Keller is more similar to Charles Clay than Michael Egnew. Clay better watch himself. He has no reason to look down his nose at Michael Egnew. Clay himself didn't do anything special last year.
Clay is more of an H-Back, Egnew is a move Te, and Clay had drops he also produced Td's. IMO, Clay's competition is more J Lane then Egnew.
Would like to hear the presser of Philbin talking about bringin in Penny, that's pretty cool.. Charles clay better learn to be a good blocker, never liked him in route.
I don't know.. I think Clay, Egnew, Keller, Sims are all going to make the team. The one in danger is Lane... we have brought in a bunch of pure fullbacks to compete with him.
I see Sims as the replacement for Fasano in terms of his role as a blocker and Keller as the receiving TE they keep looking for.
I've mentioned before and why I was confident that grimes would be ready to go for these ots's was not just how he looked months ago doing his drills, it was the body language and swagger for which he did them that told me he was fine..I've seen enough athletes rehab to know what to look for in that dept.
He must think SAMCRO is after him and is feeling the pressure. Dan Carpenter looks like Jax Teller from the early seasons of Sons of Anarchy.
Which I think means injury. Philbin is usually forthcoming when it's an excused absence due to a personal issue. He won't say what the personal issue is, but he will say it's an excused absence due to a personal issue. However when it comes to injuries, he's tight as a clam.
I don't think he commented on why Reshad Jones was out that first day. He said he only comments on guys that are there.
Clay had surgery in January. That could possibly factor in, no? I'd rather Egnew win the job though. Clay is small and has half the athletic upside.
The only reasons I would imagine Philbin being mum on Wallace's not being there are if the team is upset about him not being there, or if he's hurt and they don't want to say anything (since they don't have to). I'm just going to guess it's the latter. Could be something small like jammed fingers or a sore (but not torn) hammy.
It could factor in if they aren't very impressed with Clay's rehab from the surgery. The main thing I'm getting at is that Charles Clay did not have a great year and inspired a fair amount of coaching staff frustration of his own, so if Michael Egnew blew them away with his willingness to work hard to get better any way he could while Clay just kind of had a ho-hum off season rehabbing a surgery but not necessarily doing so with impressive focus...then that could explain why Egnew's leaped him on the depth chart for the time being. They don't seem like a staff that does this sort of thing to give a guy confidence or to coddle him.
is it a bird....no....is it a plane...no....who is it...it´s FB Bryan Rupert...and yes of course i had to look that up lol
Omar's top three OTA performers: 1. Rishard Matthews (3 TDs) 2. Kelcie McCray (diving INT) 3. Koa Misi (pick-6) I look forward to seeing Rishard Matthews beat Brandon Gibson on the depth chart in camp.
If they are messing with Sturgis' approach or how he kicks the ball off his foot it could affect his accuracy. Kind of like fixing a QB's throwing motion; sometimes you have to deconstruct it and make it worse before making it better.
Man, Matthews could end up being a pretty big player. Solid hands and toughness. Look forward to seeing him this year for sure.
Well, he's on his feet in today's OTAs, so I'd say that's an improvement, hopefully we can say same for Hartline with the ball in his hands.
I'm not seeing the pictures but I don't know that I would be able to say for certain if I did see them. All I know is someone actually put out there in writing that he's 20 lbs heavier which means more to me than a few action shots which don't necessarily show everything you'd need to see in order to make the assessment. I'll go ahead and trust the report of him being 20 lbs heavier.
