Five down, four to go. Gotta catch up to the Bears who already signed their number 1.

Eh, must say I'm not wild about his game, I prefer a faster running back.

But we do sort of need a do it all type of back as DTrain is just not reliable and should have his roster slot on the line, I liked what I watched in DTrain at KSU but he is just to inconsistent and has a hard time staying healthy.

    When does our OTA start?

Can we just give him his nickname already to stop all the miss spelling that will happen if we don't...Gilly sounds good to me.

I'd hope that means Miami will sign Taylor, Thomas, and Davis before Tuesday. I believe Dion said in his interview at rookie camp that he'd be back for the mandatory minicamp. Hopefully he'll have a deal done by then as well. Though, I could certainly see the offset language being an issue if Miami is insistent on that like they were with Tannehill.

    Well, to me:

    Miller
    Thomas
    Gray

    FB/HB Clay

    RB/KR/WR Thigpen

Is probably our best running back combo heading into the process, Javorskie Lane is another player who is on the bubble, Thomas can be beaten out, but that is my lineup heading into it all.

Right now I see the RB position with Miller being a question mark, as to whether he can be the primary back on this team or not.

As far as Thomas is concerned, we have seen what he has to offer and it isn't much. I will be surprised if he is still on the roster once the regular season begins.

Gray and Gillislee are huge question marks because they have never played a single down in the NFL and we don't know what they have to offer at this time.

Personally I would feel better about the RB position if Bush was still with the team but the Dolphin coaching staff and the GM felt otherwise. Hopefully they made the right decision in not signing Bush to a new contract and the RB's now on the team will have success in 2013. Because without a solid running game this season, Tannehill is going to be under added pressure in the passing game, especially with Martin protecting his blind side.

We already have the fast elusive guys in Miller and, if need be, Thigpen. What we lack is a reliable power guy for 3rd and short and goalline.

I could only see this happening if we're going to running Single Back like 95% of the time. Javorski is the only guy we have with the build to consistently lead block in the running game. Unless you think Sims can provide that ability (I hear he's a good blocker, but haven't watched his game to see him block on the move)?

Gilly isn't here to compete with Gray, IMO. He's here to compete against Thomas.

I still believe they'll use Gilly for a more traditional RB role and Miller as the Tavon position, so slot, RB, end arounds, etc.

If you mean compete with Thomas as in a 3rd down back, I'd agree. However, I'd consider it more like this:

Lamar Miller - Starter, he's more of an all-around back.
Thomas/Gray - I think this is more the competition between the two big backs for the short-yardage/goal line specialist.
Gillislee - 3rd down back and can spell Miller.
Thigpen - Kick returner and gadget player.

If healthy, I'd bet my money on Gray beating out Thomas for a roster spot.

Not directed at Fin D, but just in general I also think they'll keep both Lane and Clay. Lane's a decent lead blocker and did some nice work on special teams last year. Miami kept 5 TEs last year, so I don't see why they'd have a problem keeping at least 4 TEs plus Lane again this year. I could see them keeping Keller, Sims, Clay, and Egnew if one of the young receivers shows he's worth a spot. By that I mean the group of Binns, Fuller, Tyms, and the undrafted guys. I think they like Rishard Matthews more than most fans do.

I truly believe Gilly was brought in to compete with Thomas and the loser of that battle will be let go, unless Gray bombs.

    - From you're earlier post in the thread.

Considering you're pegging Lamar Miller as the Tavon position, and that Daniel Thomas was predominately a short-yardage back and 3rd down back last year, and the use of Miller was about as traditional as it gets, you've piqued my curiosity. Factor in that Marcus Thigpen and Reggie Bush were used in the slot from time to time last year, I'm not sure what you're getting at when you're saying Gillislee is competing with Thomas, when it would seem to me they would have pretty different roles, other than possibly being the 3rd down back.

    Right.

I think the goal is to get Miller on the field with a chance to have the ball. He has the most explosive skill set on offense outside of Wallace. The problem is, he's not very good in pass protection. Making him the #1 RB makes passing downs tough. You want him to be a screen option, but you don't want him protecting Ryan.

So, if Gilly beats out Thomas, he can protect Ryan and Miller can be out on the field in another position or he just becomes the 3rd down back. If Gilly can't beat Thomas, then we'll have to rely on Miller to be a more traditional back and get spelled by Thomas. Basically, if Gilly beats Thomas, I believe our offense becomes more flexible.

    --------------------

In your post, if you just highlight my post and click the button that looks like a thought balloon (it should be on the end) it will put my post in a quote box and be less confusing.

    Interesting.

I think Miller wasn't nearly as bad as some might make him out to be in pass pro. Sure, he needs to get better, no questioning that, but IMO, he was better than Reggie Bush was. I think he's going to be the starter. I'd think Gillislee is probably the #2 back and 3rd down back. That's why I had the battle more pegged at Thomas vs. Gray as a short-yardage and goaline back as Jorvorskie Lane proved pretty ineffective there last year.

I'd still think Marcus Thigpen would get looks in the slot over Miller (I just think Miller is a pretty traditional back, like Frank Gore). There was some blurb a while back about Thigpen getting those opportunities. Plus, with Keller and Clay, I think we'll see them get some opportunities in the slot as well. Also, after watching Steelers highlights of Wallace, it was interesting to see how many times they motioned him to the slot or traded him off the line for a TE or H-Back so he could get a better release.

See, I don't think there'll be a contest between Gray and Thomas for short yardage play. If Gilly beats Thomas and Gray is even only the same as Thomas in short yardage I think Thomas goes away.

I too think Thigpen will get his shot at XR spot, I just think Miller gets tried there first.

Fair enough, I can agree to that.

As for Thigpen, the original blurb was from Ben Volin, and is copied here by KFFL. March 17th was the original date. Just don't see Miller getting first crack at it. IMO, the starter's job is his to lose, and I don't think he will. I think there's too many other interesting players that can be used there - Hartline, Gibson, Keller, Clay, Matthews, Thigpen, the UDFA receivers, etc. Not saying Miller won't be used there - he very well could - but I think it'd be on a very limited basis.

My being wrong is pretty frequent and fairly well documented.

Tavon ran the ball too and would have here if he was drafted. I don't view it as starter or not starter, i view it as someone being the XR and someone being the RB.

Agreed about Tavon. While Miami's offense isn't a carbon copy of the Packers, if there's one noticeable element missing in my opinion, it's what the Packers have in Randall Cobb. I certainly think Tavon Austin would've been that guy for Miami. He would've been a nice fit IMO. Of the guys now, Rishard Matthews intrigues me based on what we saw in his snaps down the stretch. I don't think he's Cobb or Austin, but I think he could be a more explosive Davone Bess, if that makes sense.

Miller has never been a good receiver and hasn't shown much versatility, even back to his UMiami days. He fell in the draft due to injury and lack of versatility--on top of not being the smartest dude. Never cracked 100yds receiving in a season, and I'm pretty sure I've never (or just very seldom) seen him line up anywhere but the backfield - let alone catch a ball from wide/slot on an actual route. Cobb and Austin had legit histories and production in both the run and pass game, lining up all over the field. There's just no evidence to suggest Miller would be good at or even simply capable of this. He never even played third downs in college (not exactly Tavon- or Cobb-like as an x-factor). I guess anything can happen, so maybe he can learn this stuff? But he's just never done it. He did return a few kickoffs part-time in college, was fine at it, iirc; but Thigpen's a good option there. Thigpen if anyone is more likely for this role you're talking about, imo.

Part of the job that Ireland has done that I like is not just how aggressive he was in free agency and the draft it's who he got rid of..I thought going into the the offseason that we should replace three players, Bush, Smith, and Burnett..Grimes for Smith, Dion for Burnett, and Miller for Bush...I don't think you should worry.

    So that's 16 guys.

    Then figure Tannehill-Moore-Devlin.

    That's 19.

    Then Martin-Incog-Pouncey-Lewis-Thomas-Jerry OL

That's 25. Another 25 for defense. Then Longsnapper, Punter, Placekicker bring it to 53.

That what you figure we'll roster?

Why didn't we try Davone Bess at runningback? You're saying that Miller can fill a slot/WR role and run routes in this offense...things he has never done in his career and things (catching passes) that actually kept him from being drafted higher. Pass-catching from the backfield was one of his weaknesses (he barely does it), and now you want to split him out or to the slot. He couldn't learn the playbook or duties of playing RB last year, and now you want to put him in places on the field that he's never played from. He has never been on the field on third downs - does that scream mismatch versatile x-factor like Austin and Cobb? Miller lacks versatility and intelligence...and you're proposing that he play a role predicated on versatility and playbook intelligence. It's just a little unrealistic, imo.
