Can The Phins passing game be overwhelming?

I just read an interview Brian Hartline gave where he stated he believed that the Dolphins have the best receiving corps in the division. We have Mike Wallace, Brandon Gibson, Brian Hartline, Dustin Keller and Lamar Thomas maybe coming out of the backfield. I think Hartline is right. On paper I think we have the best receivers in the division.

Now New York has pretty good corners but they are a mess this year. The Patriots have a good defense that bends and doesn't break but not an elite one. And Buffalo's defense has underachieved I feel and is starting over with a new coaching staff.

Do the Dolphins have the sheer firepower to break these defenses? If Tannehill plays solid and improves this year instead of hitting a sophomore slump I think there's sheer talent on offense to air it out. I think if the Dolphins play up tempo like they are planning and keep the pressure on and don't try to play the ball control game like Sparano wanted to. If they go more to the Patriots model where they constantly put pressure on you and try to run the score up each time I think the offense can be dominating in the AFCE. What are your thoughts?

Ugh, Lamar Thomas has to be simply terrible now. He wasn't even that good in his prime. No way we have the best passing game if he's involved.

Gah! Lamar Miller! Obvious brain malfunction. Sorry. I would like others thoughts on the offense though.

Yeah, I don't know what we're thinking, especially with Gadsden still on the market.

That's classic with the Lamar Thomas....gotta love Dophans...

Anyway, we do, on paper have the best WR corps...what we don't have is a congealed OL behind them, and then there is the question of whether Tanny improves from last year. The ten years of the offensive system that NE employs, along with a usually strong pass blocking OL and arguably the best QB on the market has allowed that they don't necessarily need the best receiving corp to maintain their offensive output. We are in the second year of this system with a 2nd yr QB and new pieces around him. We all hope that will solidify our offense into the top half of the league, but that remains to be seen...

Pure talent wise we may very well have the best receiving corp in the division on paper. How T-Hill and pass blocking improve this season will dictate whether they are able to take advantage of said paper talent.

Can they overwhelm? I think there will be games when they do ... and games when they struggle. I certainly expect them to be a lot better overall than 2012 though.

The Bills selected wisely in the draft and FA as per receivers- Woods, Goodwin and Da'Rick Rogers is a pretty serious haul imo. If we would have gotten just one of those WRs to add to our off season acquisitions I would have welcomed it. We dumped an average slot WR in Bess and got what, Brandon Gibson? Is that significant progress? For a fraction of what we spent on Wallace and Gibson the Bills reloaded the WR position for their rookie QB. As things stand now we might have the best WR corps in the AFC East- only because we dropped mega bucks on Wallace and the other 3 teams in the division have either weak or unproven WRs. We went from maybe the worst WR group in the NFL to an ok one because of the Wallace acquisition- Hartline's claim is kind of an empty one imo, and my disappointment at not getting at least one WR in the draft, especially a slot improvement over Bess, is tempered mainly because I'm looking forward to seeing more if Rishard Mathews. Hartline is ok, but he's still just a guy who barley got 1000 yards because of one huge game- and he remains awful at scoring TDs. So many good WRs in this draft and we didn't get at least one of them. Damn.

I was really upset and surprised we didn't get another WR in the 2nd or 3rd with so much talent available. Long term Buffalo will probably have the best WR group. There was so much talent and we didn't draft any. And it's a problem.

I think Ireland is scared of drafting pass catchers. He's shied away from it the entire time he's been here. If I remember correctly he's never spent higher than a 3rd rounder on a pass catcher and those were for Patrick Turner and Michael Egnew. This is a passing league and we have a GM who is afraid to draft pass catchers.

I think and hope that we will have a great offense this year. I am worried that we are not drafting and developing our own star receivers. If we keep depending on free agents it's going to keep hurting us.

As much as Hartline has been flapping his gums he better put up this year. Even if its all just "on paper talk" it's like he's annointing a offense that hasn't accomplished anything.

Ultimately, most of our pass offense will be reliant on Tannehill. If he can get the ball to our WR's in space, then we can be overwhelming. If not, we will probably be good but not great. The QB is always the linchpin. WRs need to get seperation, OL needs to block well, but the QB erases a lot of negatives and enhances positives. Hopefully can make the leap, but I would expect 1-2 years more until he hits full on.

Until we prove otherwise, I'm keeping Patsies receiving corp w/Gronk and Hernandez (and now Amendola) on top until we show that we are better, mainly because a receiving corp is only as good as it's QB

Tom Brady isn't a receiver. I don't think he belongs in this debate.

Receivers don't do squat without their QB.

Best WR corps in the division, and overwhelming is the debate. Line up Calvin, Andre and Brandon, with Joey Harrington throwing it and you're not overwhelming anyone.

If Hernandez and Gronk come back healthy they still have the best receiving corps in the division even with 3 corpses at wideout.

Can we overwhelm? I just don't see our corps as that intimidating.

It all Hinges on Tannihill. You can have the fastest car in the world , but without a great driver you go nowhere.

Brian Hartline is having a little fun with the accolades.

By saying "best in the division" he knows damn well he's not saying much, because:

    1. The Jets are working with a distraction in Santonio Holmes, a mediocre slot guy in Jeremy Kerley and a totally unproven Stephen Hill.

    2. The Patriots just ditched Wes Welker and replaced him with a guy who can't stay healthy, have another slot guy in Julian Edelman who also can't stay healthy, and from there have two rookies in Aaron Dobson and Josh Boyce, neither of which are even significant rookies.

    3. The Bills have Stevie Johnson and rookies Robert Woods and Marquise Goodwin. Woods and Goodwin are Day 2 guys. Da'Rick Rogers may figure in if he gets through camp without pissing off the coaches enough to cut him.

If the Dolphins don't have the best WR unit in the AFC East then it's probably the Bills. And that's saying a lot.

Disagree. I love when our players have confidence. I love Richie and his attitude too. Tired of being pushovers.

I appreciate when they win and have this attitude. It goes cart then horse and just because you talk doesn't mean you cant be a pushover. Just ask Channing Crowder who couldn't shut up if you put a dirty jock in his mouth and he was never a playmaker. Then take a guy like Ricky Williams who, for all the beating he took from fans, when he did play was above average and never ran his mouth.

Are you talking about driving literally, or the bad metaphor?

Just 2 or 3 seasons ago, we had the best receiving corp in the division, or close to it. A strong corp with great receiving RBs. But we didnt get anywhere.

    The bad metaphor.

He said you can't go anywhere in a fast car with a bad driver, which isn't true.

Hell, the flip side is Mario Andretti wouldn't win the Indy 500 in a stock Corolla.

This team is talking a lot about how great they can be...if they don't back it up on the field they'll just be "Jets lite".

All I mean is even if its only 2 or 3 players, although confidence is good, hearing them say how great they can be and how they have a playoff team in the Spring considering the past 9 seasons have seen the worst teams the Dolphins have ever fielded in the NFL, I'd rather just wait for them to actually prove it in a full season. And the last game I watched they were embarrassed by the Patriots on every side of the ball...so I am jaded, and hearing "We have the best WRs in the AFC East" & "we are going to be great this year" in May does nothing.

The funny thing is I do expect a playoff team...but I still get bothered hearing even one player say how great they are when they haven't done anything but frustrate us for 10 years.
