"Potential" does not equal "roster spot". Every young player who gets cut at the end of camp every year has potential. Doesn't make them innately valuable.

I said if I must have a one dimensional player, then that one dimension should be closer to Jenkins' skillset than Misi's skillset. I did not say I expect Jenkins to replace Misi, nor did I say that Jenkins will be a good player in the NFL. Stop reading things that aren't there.

Again, you are reading things that aren't there. When did this go from a discussion about depth to actual roster construction? And why is that burden on me--where's your roster? Where's your criteria?

I can count on one hand the number of impact plays Clay has made in his career. He's a second string fullback and tied with Sims for third string tight end. Where on this team is Clay supposed to stick and function? I don't see it.

The common theme is that I am not enamored with the sparkling promise of "potential" just because a given player happens to be signed by the Dolphins. I can go on the forums of the other 31 teams and find someone talking up the potential of young bubble players. Doesn't mean anything.

Yep, even I who went into this offseason w/a "neutral leaning negative" view of J Ireland have come around because he's done the two things I needed to see from him:

-He made bold moves for guys he wanted who also are playmakers

-He finally seems to get that the AFCE runs through NE, and to play Parcells ball against a Coach who has perfected it is only going to get you beat down.

We have the pieces in place, with some tweaks (would like to see either a Vet tackle added or Jerry or Garner offered a serious shot at starting at RT), we now have players AND prospects who can cause other teams problems in game planning.

Once again, you fail to understand that your statements don't exist in a vacuum. There is no rational way to judge our depth so harshly, unless you have a comparative baseline (like other teams) or you're just talking through your butt. Without either of those reasons, then you have to believe our team exists in a fantasy land where all depth players are just slightly worse than starers at every position.

I was giving you the benefit of the doubt, by assuming you didn't believe in that fantasy...perhaps I shouldn't have.

Yep, if Misi is pushed into a reserve role it is not as if he was a terrible starter, it just means Spitler and Trusnik are pushed further down the food chain, maybe off of the roster.

You'd be making quite a bit of ill-advised decisions, to do that now. There is a lot of competition, and it would be wise to let them play it out. Living and dying by what coaches Gms say is a total waste of time anyway. The depth is pretty good, and it does seem he's right that you cant single out 53 yet. That's both for good and bad reasons. We need to determine which CBs,OTs,HBs want it most !

 

Regarding depth. Lance Louis has hardly been mentioned. Its about Incognito and Dallas Thomas. Last time i looked Lance Louis was a pretty decent Guard. Bear fans wernt happy when we grabbed him. Best O-Lineman for the Bears going by their forum comments. He's 28. Should be hitting his prime if his ACL is healing nicely.
Has Will Yeatman disappeared off the radar? Philbin has praised him and says his best is yet to come. Apparently not eh?

 

I think the depth has improved. You're right about Lance Louis and Dallas Thomas. They do provide depth. Samuda has a year under him, he'll be better.

I don't want to get into Yeatman who I feel is consistently overtalked about all things considered. Garner isn't great depth, in my opinion. But I like the interior depth.

Linebacker depth improves with the addition of Jelani Jenkins and the possibility that Koa Misi's Will spot will be occupied on some downs by Dion Jordan, relegating Misi himself to a depth player.

Corner depth certainly improves with the return to health of Richard Marshall, the additions of Jamar Taylor and Will Davis. Though I still can't figure out why they wouldn't want to keep Bryan McCann.

Davone Bess to Brandon Gibson is a step in the wrong direction but the #4 spot (potential #3?) with Rishard Matthews should be improved by virtue of his having a firmer grasp on the offense.

We had to rely at times on Jeron Mastrud as a depth tight end (100 snaps). That turns into Dion Sims. That's an upgrade.

Defensive tackle depth took a hit.

All the way around though...improved depth.

 

Are you confusing Bryan McCann with Brice McCain? I don't see what is so special about McCann.

 

He didn't say he would cut them. He's saying those are expendable. Ireland is saying there are so many good players he's going to have a problem trimming the roster down.

Rank them #1 and on. Is 53+ so good you'd have a hard time to cut anyone? That's what Ireland is saying.

He said he would have trouble suiting 45 players. That's pretty much saying he would cut them.

 

I was not a fan of drafting Jones, mostly because I had developed an infatuation with Eifert. But what was the main reason for drafting Jordan? Yes, he can cover. Yes, he's a physical specimen- all those good things. But we took Jordan because we want to get to the QB consitently and with conviction. When you consider that we could have had a player with triple the sack count of Jordan in 2012 AND a 6'2 CB that averages 4 INts a year or a tackle who may have the highest ceiling of any in the draft, it hurts a little bit.

I, too, love Dion Jordan and the possibility of what the monster can develope into in the NFL. But he also scares me. If I'm an opposing OC playing Jordan today, I'm running at him all game long.

Edit: It's the prospect of having 2 stars in 2 picks at positions of dire need rather than 1 star and a kidney ailing prayer that makes me not love Jordan the pick, not the player.
