we shouldn't let facts get in the way. clearly that was a conspiracy to make him look stupid for not coming out.
That is a question I've had for a while. He's 6-5 with long arms, strong enough to play tackle, and I'm not so sure he's really all that lacking in athleticism. How did he perform against pass rushers in the SEC at LT?
That's a different story, and I could possibly be ok with that. What I'm arguing against is drafting him with the intention of flipping him for a profit which I think is incredibly wishful thinking considering any team could've had him up to this point so I don't see why they would use a higher pick on him in the future unless he actually has a legitimate opportunity to prove himself (in time that actually counts rather than preseason, blowouts, or the final game of the year).
He is at least as good as Brees was in all those traits, when Brees came out of college. The reasons he has dropped IMO: the popularity now of QBs who can run the zone read, concern about whether his arm is fully healed, didn't have a good senior season.
hahaha okay, whatever you say man. You clearly don't want to deal with "facts" you would rather compare all facets of Barkley's game to Future Hall of Famers and say he is inferior because he isn't as good as them. We are talking about taking Barkley in the 4th not even the 3rd lol. And since you clearly do not know what the NFL Advisory Committee is or does read this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NFL_Draft_Advisory_Board But don't worry, I am sure your opinion is more important than the "professional football scouting experts" that are PAID for their opinions about prospects. Oh and totally forget about the fact that the NFL Advisory Committee has traditionally been very, very conservative in their projections. Sleep tight!
I just dont see it (unless there's stuff out there by actual NFL teams saying they were well prepared to take him that high). Personally, I know my opinion hasn't changed from last year until now, as I thought he was a 3rd rounder then, too. I don't need excuses to rationalize his drop b/c, like many people, I never saw the talent there to begin with.
Watch the Notre Dame game. He really, really struggled against #9 on ND. That being said, #9 is a legit first round DT prospect for Notre Dame and he had that Lisfranc injury. I still wouldn't mind taking Jones in the 4th though. I think he projects to guard in the NFL. I don't think he has the appropriate athleticism to play tackle. I really like the Cal Center too.
Lmao! Man you're a riot. You either weren't paying attention or refuse to acknowledge he was a first round talent.
There is a slot guy from Rice that may interest you. Sam McGuffie. Durability is an issue, but athleticism and talent isn't. I would draft him after a trading down in the 4th with a 6th round pick. http://www.nfldraftscout.com/ratings/dsprofile.php?pyid=83673&draftyear=2013&genpos=WR The kid's pro day was just ridiculous. I wish I would have been there just to here the ooo's and ah's.
I can't remember that far back to be honest. I don't want to just feed you BS. Personally, based on what I have seen I do not think he would be able to handle the Tackle position. In a pinch he could play tackle, but you don't want him as a long-term solution there. He would be a pretty solid guard though. If you are looking for a pure Tackle I like Reid Fragel. I would also be interested in drafting the 6'6 278 Michael Williams (TE of Alabama) and trying to see if you could convert him to OT. It would be a long term project, but if you draft him you could automatically use him as a blocker for 3rd and short and goal line.
I just find it hard to believe someone can play LT without much help in the SEC, be that good, and suddenly he sucks there because of ridiculous reasons. He's 6-4 instead of 6-5 so what. He did his job against guys that are athletic enough at that level. I think he'll struggle more against DTs than DEs. /
So I guess every other rating they were wrong on was also b/c of ensuing extemporaneous circumstances, eh? The advisory board doesn't draft the players, and it's far from an exact science. It's a guideline but doesn't actually represent what teams will do. Unless you have concrete proof from teams, it means nothing. Colt McCoy was reportedly given a late 1st/early 2nd round grade. Remember when Andre Woodson was supposed to be a 1st rounder? 6th round what? BTW, Mayock didn't think Barkley was a top 10 pick last year.
... like the fact that he's at best a 4th rounder and obviously not viewed as a quality starter by 32 actual TEAMS, which trumps media craze & any advisory grade.
The only reason Jones is still on the board is the foot injury, that he played with in the BCS game against Notre Dame. He is very technically sound in all aspects of offensive line play. He was moved to C as a senior because of team need, and made the move seamlessly. He has not been able to work out yet, other than bench press, where he did 27 reps.
My hopes for day 3 are, in the 4th round in no particular order, 2 of Barrett Jones, Matt Barkley, Alex Okafor, Jesse Williams, Quinton Patton or Ryan Swope. I'd be satisfied though with any of Stepfan Taylor, Johnathan Franklin, Andre Ellington, Denard Robinson for one of the picks. I think we can address depth at RB though in the 5th with either Cierre Wood or Dennis Johnson. I'd use one of the 5th rounders on Dustin Hopkins.
Brees has elite feet, even back to his Purdue days they were incredibly quick in his pocket work, in setting & resetting, and especially under duress. Barkley isn't in Brees' league in that regard. Brees is more quick twitch than Barkley, and that fraction of a second counts. Brees has close to a 6th sense when plays break down; Barkley doesn't. Brees' athleticism is greater... and rushed for 546 yards & 5 TDs as a senior alone. Barkley rushed for minus 113 yards in 4 years. Brees even caught 6 passes and 2 receiving TDs. Personally, even w/o the zone read stuff I wouldn't have given him higher than a 3rd round grade but could've seen him go higher to a QB desperate team. The Bucs drafted a backup, non zone-read QB, Glennon. They could've taken Barkley and given him time to fully heal if he hasn't done so already, but they chose the QB with greater potential upside. The Seahawks started drafting for depth in round 3 and seem more comfortable with Brady Quinn as Wilson's backup than Barkley. With their 3rd round pick they basically said Christine Michael as a backup to Lynch is more important than Barkley backing up Wilson. Arizona is rolling with Drew Stanton to backup 33 year old Palmer but chose to pass on Barkley in the 3rd. Saints just lost their backup and decided Luke McCown is a better contingency to 34 year old Brees than a 3rd on Barkley. Eagles are a Mike Vick injury away from Foles running an offense that Barkley would seem better suited for but they passed on him as well. We just gave Oakland a 2nd rounder back but they still seem to feel Matt Flynn > Matt Barkley.
Hey UCF, remind me what round Barkley got drafted in? That's right, he hasn't been drafted yet. Sweet dreams.
I just keep seeing playmaker for Miami as one of these picks. DT depth would not surprise me but Ireland loves to get skill position players in the 4th-5th. He may even double up at WR if he sees value there.
what do you mean "refuse to acknowledge"? I've never acknowledged him as a 1st round talent. He's always been a 3rd round at best talent on tape, dating back to his junior year. It's funny this supposed 1st round talent hasn't been drafted yet. Obviously the prior 1st round Advisory grade & media/fan perception was wrong. The kid's not in a friggin' wheel chair or anything. He's simply not physically talented and never has been.... expect when he was younger and matured faster than everyone else. Boomer, where are you man? Get in here and throw some jabs with me.
I just stopped saying my peace over a year ago, and after drafting Tannehill I didn't really spend much time in QB discussion. You'd have to search through draft threads. I'll try to find you something, pappy.
I mean if you're looking for a slot WR that can actually make big plays, is tough as can be, blocks like a truck you can't ask for much more than Ryan Swope. It seems like the obvious pick you just have to be aggressive in making the move to get him and Jonathan Franklin. If you have to trade a seventh or trade back with the fifth do it.
I also did not have Barkley as a first round pick last year when the hype was at its strongest...Todd was all over it..
I have watched a lot of Barkley and do not agree that Brees is superior in all those mentioned comparisons. I'm done discussing Barkley unless we draft him. You expressed your opinion and I expressed mine. Neither of us are changing our minds. The teams you mentioned that did not choose to yet draft him as a backup also did not draft any other QB as a backup. Tampa Bay did, but IMO the made a mistake. Glennon is an awful pro prospect IMO. We'll see how it all plays out though. None of them have drafted Nassib or Wilson either and I'd take either of them over Glennon, any day.
I forgot the round you get drafted in decides your career I guess Tom Brady is just a farce this whole time
He was seen as a first round talent his junior year. That is a fact. He was given a first round grade. Just accept it and bow out.
Phillip Thomas is someone that can add interceptions for you. His straight-line speed at 4.57, 210 isn't impressive but it's actually not that bad. Renaldo Hill was a 4.6 safety that was much slower than that for Miami and you never really saw anyone burn Miami with him out there. There's much more to safety play than a 40 time. His quickness is excellent and his vertical plus strength is also very good. If they want to create turnovers he'd be a heck of a pick.
I agree. In the 4th I want Miami to go with Phillip Thomas and Devin Taylor. I would like Barkley but I doubt they pick him. I also wouldn't mind trading up for Patton, Lattimore ,Jeff Baca or Brian Schwenke.
