Just draft the mother grabber and worry about oline and corner later, he's that good..and he's that important to our young Qb, and to our anemic offense. Question is, what if Austin and Eifert are on the board..that's why I've been calling the 1a and 1a all offseason..they are equal to me in terms of what they could do for our offense..
Either a smoke screen or they haven't learned to keep secrets yet. I want Eifert, but this quote starts to make me think they are looking elsewhere
The Dolphins have been good at keeping secrets and being conservative in the draft for years. I haven't seen anything to suggest it'll be much different this year.
I'll be happy with him in the first, ideally in a trade down. Frankly, I'll be happy with just about any position other than DT, OG or RT. Ireland has to work hard to mess up our first round. Of course, we know he has it in him.
I know that both are essentially playing on one year deals at this point, but we have Starks and Solia there, and a backup in Martin who Ive read good things about, as well as Randall from last year's draft. Not to mention Odrick, who could slide over if we take a DE. Unless we had a plan in place to move one of the starters for a second rounder, taking a DT seems pretty far down the list of good options. Yes, long term value, but we can get that a lot of other places where we need more help.
The one year deals, the fact our base defense is a 4-3, and that DT is probably THE most important part of any defense, make DT our biggest need after OT, IMO. And unlike OT, it cannot be easily filled in FA.
Or Star. Either one, I'd be very happy with at #12. i wouldn't prefer a trade up for one of them, but I'd rather see that than a trade up for an OT, because we can solve OT in other ways.
To me, that's the real appeal to this draft...We could use a TE like Eiffert, or a DT like Star, or a Guard like Cooper, or a even a RT, although I don't see any I'd take at #12, but then I don't look at RTs in the draft or a WR like Patterson or Austin or even a LT like Johnson who may be available... At this point, and this is a good thing, not only do we not know who Ireland may go with, neither do other teams... On top of that, whichever route he takes is going to be a good one for this team... For those who don't want us to take an OT or OG, if any of the top 5 guys are there (the 3 tackles and the 2 guards), I predict that's where he goes though...We've spent a lot of our resources to get more O firepower this offseason and he's done a good job of that...He could round things out with the OL at the top of the draft and we'd still have a very good offseason...
No, I don't think it's a smoke screen. Tyler Eifert is a guy whom has properties that both Ireland and Philbin would like, and blended in such a way I think it's pretty reasonable to think their decision making process would think quite highly of him. I think the real question is if it's at #12.
What he brings to the table is clearly a need, if not a must have. Look at Miami's receiving corps as it is currently constructed. Miami still needs another run after the catch guy, but they also need that big, physical target that can be a major threat in the endzone. I'm pretty convinced that if they will come out of the first couple of rounds with a tight end that can fill this role. They will either take Tyler Eifert at 12, or they will grab Gavin Escobar at 42.
Then there you go, it's a smoke screen and by your logic Eifert is almost a certainty to be in another uniform.
If they slide down, that is such a cop-out and once again Ireland will have proved that he's not learned his lesson about acquiring top flight offensive personnel. Atlanta showed that being aggressive can pay off, and sometimes you need to take a few chances. He's basically always gone for the safe pick. The one time he did trade and was aggressive we ended up with Daniel Thomas - not exactly a ringing endorsement of his evaluation skills.
Well I wouldn't mind him at all either. But I have read somewhere his blocking is just not that good, and that is what we lost in Fasano, and didn't really get back with Keller. We need someone that not only can catch the ball but block like a pseudo-lineman.
I have no problem with that, that's the beauty of identifying the top two offensive weapons early...leverage.. I don't think we can be satisfied with Wallace and Keller as the end all be all for this offense..Eifert or Austin will complete me.
I don't believe you will get him in a trade down, he's a legit top 15 prospect in this draft..tops at his position by a good amount, and incredibly versatile and complete, solid work ethic, no red flags, just a pure prospect, worth every #12 penny.
We passed on Graham..we passed on Gronk...why pass again on an elite prospect, it just doesn't make any sense to settle.
Lets say we give up 54 for Albert. I would expect Ireland to trade down to get another second round pick. The question in that scenario is "How far can we move down the draft board and still have Eifert waiting for us?"
Really? They showed a ton of interest in Tannehill last year, and there were plenty of reports they wanted him including reports during the Manning pursuit when there was talk that they would still draft Tannehill. There was also plenty of interest in Pouncey the year before as they sent just about the entire front office to watch him at his pro day. I think if you look at who they are showing interest in, you will find the player they plan to draft among those names.
I think a scenario that could be in play for what your talking about here is to wait and let the draft unfold, have some trade down partners on the phone, if by chance BOTH Eifert and Austin have not come off the board when it's time to pick, then I think because of the similar impact both players could have for us, and how even they are on my board, there is some leverage in moving down at that point while minimizing the risk to lose out on both..not too far though..
Eifert is the player I have been wanting Ireland to draft all along. It makes complete sense to draft the best TE in the draft and add him to the array of offensive talent the Dolphins have acquired in free agency. Of course drafting Eifert, if he is still on the board, would be the best upgrade for the offense and would give Tannehill another potent weapon. Unfortunately we have to remember who is doing the drafting. So the Dolphins drafting an offensive lineman with their first round selection is what I expect from Ireland. Hopefully the Dolphins will trade for Albert before the draft and this will make the OL less of a need and Ireland will be open to drafting Eifert, if he is still on the board at 12. My biggest worry, besides Ireland drafting an offensive lineman, is that Eifert will be drafted before the Dolphins selection.
Question. Ive been watching a shed load of highlight tape on Eifert. He seems to be always in the slot on those highlights, even seen him lineup wide! Granted its the Notre Dame Offense way of utilizing him but we are talking NFL for him. Where will we use him most? Can he block? Highlight vids dont show the bread and butter blocking.
All the stuff from a positioning standpoint that Eifert did with Notre Dame would be asked of him in Miami. Philbin/Sherman have tight ends lined up in-line, in the slot, as a wide out, and an H-Back/motion guy. How much of they do what is dependent on their skill-set, but Eifert would get a blend. You can find videos that show Eifert blocking, just look for ones that are "VS" whatever that show all of his snaps in a single game. He's not a great blocker, but in comparison to most of his peers and the standards of what comes out in college he's solid.
He's not gonna be able to take a tackle at 12 Jdub, none will be on the board, if he takes a guard over Eifert or Austin then there's gonna be some serious criticism.
