Dead money doesnt count agains the cap tho right? That's just the dead contract that they have to pay out, but it doesn't actually impact the cap.
    Am I understanding this correctly?

I don't see how we have dead money on Long, his contract is done.

Jake Long voided the final year of his rookie contract... thus the dead cap.

I think dead cap counts against our salary cap too.

So the #Dolphins actually gained $800k in cap space by cutting Burnett and adding Wheeler. Only one it hurt was Stephen Ross' wallet

There was an accelerated bonus three or so years ago that was to be paid out over x number of years (including this season).

As of right now, we'll have a good bit of cap room next year also, but similarly to this year we'll have like 5 or 6 starters with an expiring contract.

So we will have 10.4 million in cap room awaiting us next year.

We should, yes. Just as if someone's contract were up, only on this instance the player is already long gone.

...it wasn't a question or me seeking affirmation. I was merely responding to the original headline of the dead cap. I all comes off after next year and thus, cap space.

Don't treat me like a newb!

He voided the final year of his rookie deal, apparently we get dinged for that.

Not necessarily true Miami automatically gets an additional $10.4 in cap space next year. Ireland/FO may be setting up contracts so the players being signed take a bigger cap hit next year than this year. It only means Miami is carrying $10.4 million in dead money this year.

We aren't going to roll THAT deep though. For argument's sake, the accelrated bonuses of the aforementioned players are attached to this year's cap and roll off next year. Any contracts that are signed that may eat that room isn't being discussed for now.

Principally Soliai. With how deep this draft is at DL, I would not be surprised if Lotulelei was in play at #12. Him or Warmack would be great imo. Though, Austin is in play either at #12 or a tradeup into 1R.

By cutting Dansby and Burnett and eating the cap hit now, it freed up a good chunk of money next year, as their cap hits would have been a combined 16-17 million. Now, we gain that with no dead money offset in 2014. Ellerbe and Wheeler are unlikely to count that much next season, so its a win for us in that we replaced them with younger, better and cheaper players, and solved what was going to be a hole ahead of time. Win!

Problem with that is Misi was pretty damn good last season and costs much less.
