Still say I'd rather sign Jennings and look to draft one or two of: Patterson, Patton, Swope, Bailey.

My biggest concern with us signing Wallace is that we don't make wide receiver a priority in the draft. Hope I'm wrong about that.

You'd prefer we get GJ and make getting good hands in the draft a priority, which is fine, but are concerned with us getting MW and not making hands a priority in the draft.....

I don't get it, what would make the priorities shift, if we signed one FA WR or the other, Both would be signed to be "#1" technically, so why would it change? I don't think skillsets would do that imo.

    curiousity, not an attack.

I am excited for the signing! We get him and a wr in the 3rd like Swope or Woods and we are set.

I still say we atleast attempt to put down a Hartron for Megatron offer. I mean, they would have to add sweets, but it should atleast be discussed.

No, I get that dcafiero. I realize it's a bit of a contradiction on my part.

I guess my concern is if they sign Wallace (presumably to a big contract) combined with the recent signing of Hartline, that Ireland might feel as though he has adequately addressed the WR position. That he sees both as being young and longer term solutions. I fear he would then prioritize other positions ahead of WR in the draft. And, we would either not draft a WR. Or, pass on the higher rated prospects. Maybe he takes a flier on a guy late in the draft.

I could be completely off base with this hunch, but it's just a sense I have. And, like I said....I hope I'm wrong. We'll see.

This is a very reasonable concern, Although, One could say Ireland could very well completely avoid the playmaking talent pool in the draft regardless of signing MW or not .

Who knows what he will do in 'ultimatum do or die' mode, but -- I would hope that is not the case as well.

I got to ask everybody everywhere is saying Miami is hands down the favorite, done deal, and when you look at teams cap space of possibly interested teams it does reflect that Miami is indeed in the most advantageous position to get him.

That being said, why pay more?

That is the most likely outcome. If you're on the guillotine, why bother worrying about the future, heh. I do want us to sign one of the FA hands, MW included, but I agree with the statement that it really shouldn't make us pass on people like bailey and some of the other shiney receiving talent if the opportunities come up. That would blow.

Teams might not be interested because of the price. If the price comes down, more teams could enter the foray and raise his price back to where we're the only ones willing or able to pay it. That's how bidding goes, the number goes up until there's only one interested party left.

Considering none of us know a thing about if Wallace is coming here or not, we should understand we know even less what happened over the phone between his agents and the other teams. Point being, there could have been weeks of negotiations we don't know about. We also have no idea what the deal we've offered is, if we even offered one yet.

Maybe we have no competition at 11mm a season....but we do have competition at 9mm a season, and we don't want to get in a bidding war, or risk losing him?

Was about to post this haha. I dont think the deal is done because that would be tampering to agree to a deal this early, but I feel that they are on the same page and some say Miami had little to no competition for him

Which means that Wallace already practiced with Tanny, bought a house, and signed a deal with 790 for his own radio show.

This is part of the reason I've tried to push calm rational thought about Ireland, because the fans create pressure and that pressure can effect a GM's decisions.

We can pretend like it shouldn't matter and that Ireland or any GM should be above it all, but our fans reached new levels of insanity last off season with actually protesting and paying good money for airplane signs. So yeah, Ireland may get fired, but he also may overreact to fans who are like LB & JW and end up hurting the team more.

With respect to Jon Martin? I guess I'm willing to give him another year at right tackle to see if he improves. The more he improves there, the more likely I am to trust him at left tackle. But if we just toss him in at left tackle after he looked the way he did, and we still don't even know if he's really been re-making his body yet the way we all hoped...that feels like putting the cart before the horse.

The Dolphins just recently reported in for their off season training stuff. I remember there was an article talking about how now is the time for Jon Martin to prove how much he wants it by re-making his body. But I disagreed. I thought he should've been re-making his body for the last two months already, on his own. That's how you show how much you want it...by coming in having already done a ton of work. We'll see if that's the case though. That's my biggest source of discomfort with him aside from the fact he got destroyed by such a wide variety of rushers in 2012, including at left tackle.

Pressure may as well be his middle name at this point, I personally think its silly to assume fans have absolutely zero impact on decisions. its an entertainment based business.

Well, this contract will definitely hurt the team. That is for sure. I just hope they find a sucker that will take it off our hands in 2 years.

Contrary to what you want to believe, If a very fast young vertical/deep threat with 32 TDs who has proven he can run a plethora of complete route trees, goes to a team with virtually no receiving talent on offense is hurting said team, then consider me a masochist.

Edit: The guy might not be the best option, but if you honestly believe that the FO and Coach Philbin will agree to ink this guy for top dollar and it will produce only negative results, I really don't know what to say. I may be in the minority but I put a lot of faith in Philbins influence on player selection with JI

This may not be an interest to a lot of people on the board, but I find teams' handling of PR and fans interesting -

Whether the Dolphins sign Wallace or not, they've really mishandled how this story was treated in the public eye. After being spurned by Harbaugh and Fisher and Manning, how could they let fans' expectations get so high for Wallace? Now, if they don't sign Wallace, even though I don't want them to, it's going to be viewed as a failure. It appears as if they put all of their eggs in that basket.

And if they DO sign Wallace - they've let the fans get so comfortable with the idea that they are the front-runners, it won't appear as much of a win. They're just expected to do it now. And they've let the story sit for so long, that it has turned from 'Miami signing Wallace' to 'Miami going to have to overpay to get Wallace.'

Now, maybe they come out with some huge trade and this was a smokescreen and makes them look like geniuses - but at this point, I'm struggling to see a win in terms of PR for the team. Obviously I'll take wins over PR, but I do think how teams handle this kind of thing can be a reflection of how well the organization is run as a whole.

The Dolphins PR hasn't done anything though aside from say we signed Hartline and Moore. Everything else is a "creation" of local and national media. How can the Dolphins PR come out and say anything about a guy who technically isn't a FA until Tuesday?

PR is about controlling the overall message - not just what you put out there. What you put out there is advertising.

I read an article that spoke about the Dolphins knowing by now if they have a LT in Martin or not, ie. they will see if he's put in the effort before the off-season training stuff really starts. That's the way I read it anyway, not that they would know after the off-season training.

If that's the case, they should know now if they need to really make an effort to re-sign Long or look for another option in FA.

Where do you think the media is getting these stories? They can leak their own quotes about other players. They can downplay the interest. They can have coaches make abstract quotes comparing players like Wallace to others without naming them.

The media is reporting what people want them to report. They have two sources - teams and agents.

The entire board used to talk about how Mortenson was Parcell's mouthpiece - and now all of a sudden it's impossible to believe a team can partially control the media's coverage?
