Thatd make for some good role reversal. I'd be bashing Irish and others could defend him. Imo we should be all about skill guys on offense and guys who can help us stop Brady, preferably by hitting him so hard he retires mid game. We won't win **** till he's gone.
I don't think it is a given that Wallace gets all that much attention at $10+ per year. It will take a team that (1) has plentiful cap space, (2) needs a WR, (3) doesn't have too much invested at WR already, (4) needs a speed guy and not a move-the-chains guy, (5) has a strong belief in downfield passing, (6) is not bothered by Wallace's "limitations" and (7) is not enamored with any fo the WRs they think will be available to them in the draft. The fact that everyone is reporting that the Dolphins will break the bank for him will probably scare off some teams in the early part of FA and they may address their WR issues before it becomes apparent that he can be had for less. I think if Pitt was going to keep him they'd have made an effort. And are they really going to have Wallace and Brown on big deals. Is KC really going to spent $20+ million per year on their starting WRs? I don't see the Colts being all that interested in light of Hilton. Like KC, I don't see Tampa spending another $10+ on a WRR ClReveland is a pretty strong possibility, but we don't know if they fit conditions (6) and (7) above. I can't see Tampa signing another $10+ million yr receiver and I don;t think cincy would see it as such a pressing need already having Green.
I had no idea that the objective of the draft was to please the fans. Especially this tattered fanbase.
Wasn't Cincinnati also supposed to be interested in Mike Wallace a year ago? Has that changed? That frightens me, as they have more cap space than we do. Interested to see who we sign between Wallace and Jennings, but I'm getting the feeling that we are going to be hesitant to pay them inflated contracts. Someone earlier on in this thread said that they wouldn't be surprised if we just had Hartline/Bess/Rookie, and I'm sort of falling into that thought process as well. I think people on these boards need to keep their expectations in check. For some reason, the majority here think that everything is just going to fall perfectly into place when it may be the furthest thing from actually happening come free agency. We might not sign either of them, by choice or competition.
That's not what I was implying at all. I'm just of the idea that if Ireland's already got Hartline and Wallace in the fold, there wouldn't be as big of an uproar from the fanbase if in fact he did take a G in the 1st round; they'd already have their "big name". Ireland should do what's best for the football team, not the fans - I'll leave it at that.
Shouright has stats that show I can hold my own vs Warmack. But he seems to be unavailable at the moment.
Cincinnati's had some whispers about it, but with A.J. Green, Mohamed Sanu, Andrew Hawkins, and Marvin Jones ALL producing last year I don't think it's likely. Plus they have Jermaine Gresham who improved, and they still managed to work in Orson Charles and Ryan Whalen into the offense quite a bit. I think they're going to be policing up their current free agents more so than going after any big names from outside. They've got to figure out what to do with Andre Smith, they're trying to work out long-term deals for Michael Johnson (just franchised), Geno Atkins and Carlos Dunlap (both free agents after 2013), and they have decisions to make on Rey Maualuga, Adam Jones, Terrance Newman, Manny Lawson, and Thomas Howard (all starters/heavy contributors last year).
Yeah Pitt is working restructuring harrison and Polamalu as we speak. Keenan Allen and Wallace are players they will want to keep. Bet they keep 1.
I trust Dave Lapham, their color commentator. He called them giving the franchise tag to Michael Johnson right after their playoff loss, I just regurgitated what he's said since about that. He's usually pretty plugged into what the team does (WAY more so than guys like Rose, Cefalo, Griese or the Finsiders). I'd just think that given their holes on defense, and knowing they want to lock up Johnson, Atkins, and Dunlap long-term, I just can't see them throwing enough coin at Mike Wallace.
I am ****ing terrified we will be used as leverage again this offseason, and not sign anyone Anyone else not sleeping Monday night?
According to Jeff Darlington's article... A) The Dolphins are set to ink Brian Hartline to a contract worth approximately $7 million per year B) The Dolphins recognize that Mike Wallace is going to get more money than both Vincent Jackson and Dwayne Bowe, and are OK with that C) The Dolphins will be in a bidding war with Minnesota for Wallace's services I'm astounded if this is all true.
There's almost too much info out there linking us to Wallace. Have to imagine this has all been leaked by the team for leverage on Jennings / trade partner or by Wallace to drive up the market. Either way it is WAY too early for this much talk about Wallace to Miami - there is no way the team can have all of their eggs in this basket.
Well, let's try and see the bright side of this for a moment. Is a wide receivers unit featuring Mike Wallace, Brian Hartline and Davone Bess...a good wide receivers unit? Is that the stuff "Greatest Show on Turf" offenses are made of? Will it turn Ryan Tannehill into the player we've all been waiting for, for about 13 years now?
Well thats a diverse set of skills at WR. Hell, if we are going to overpay for Hartline and Wallace, lets go ahead and overpay for Cook too. O face!
This is my problem with re-signing Hartline. Even if they sign Wallace they HAVE to draft another skill player with speed. You can't sign one guy and assume the problem is fixed. They've identified this is their #1, or close to, problem - yet would put all of their trust in ONE player fitting perfectly and staying healthy? Hartline is a nice player - but if you lost him, you could conceivably make up his production with a combination of Bess and Fasano. If you sign Wallace, you still need to draft a guy, which means you then have Wallace, Hartline, Pick, Bess, Fasano, Egnew, and Clay that have significant assets allocated to them. Ireland's history of doubling-up on positions makes me hope he realizes this as well.
So then the next question is, with $7 million annual to Hartline, Bess at $3.4 million, and Wallace at more or less $12 million, a total of let's say for arguments sake $23 million invested in the wide receivers unit...approximately 1/5th of your total salary cap weighted in your receivers...are they going to play worthy of that?
Hartline for 7 million per year are you kidding me Jeff? I'm your biggest backer and I just flat out do NOT understand this move. It's terrible. If Hartline is going to get that money somewhere else, let him. I know, we have to keep SOME of our best FAs but in a world where Hartline gets SEVEN MILLION DOLLARS PER YEAR Ive gotta believe you can replace his production with a well timed 2nd round pick.
I guess my issue with that receivers unit is you still don't really have a lot of touchdown threat there. Wallace is a vertical guy. Hartline's issues are well out. Davone Bess not exactly a touchdown guy either. There's no power there, no James Jones or Jordy Nelson. No Eric Decker, Dez Bryant, A.J. Green, Brandon Marshall, Demaryius Thomas, Julio Jones, Marques Colston, Mike Williams, Michael Crabtree or Vincent Jackson...none of the big/explosive types that punch the football in. Puts more pressure on you to find that at tight end, or to whip the ground game into such good shape that it can do what it does even inside the condensed spaces of the red zone.
If Dolphins sign Hartline to $7 million annual, that doesn't mean that he will have a 7 million dollar cap hit. He could easily have a 4 million dollar cap hit. Heck his contract could be 7 million a year, but if you look closer it is a 5 million dollar a year. There are so many unknowns. To answer your question, there is a chance that they can. Wallace is good at deep routes, Hartline is good at medium routes and Bess is a master at short routes. With good play at quarterback that could be an effective wide receiving corp.
Agreed about the more pressure to find a tight end. Hopefully Mathews can step up as he does have the power to score.
I think that's irrelevant. Over the life of the contracts you're looking at annual averages of $23 million assuming Bess kept at the same price tag.
Do you think they'll look to add a TE with Clay and Egnew already on the roster? I've been assuming they would re-sign Fasano, but perhaps not. They've spoken highly of both Egnew and Clay in the past - I know Ireland isn't afraid to cut his mistakes, but beyond just the financial assets required for a TE, the roster spots might not necessarily be available, either.
Ben Volin is already saying the Dolphins are "expected" to make a play for Jared Cook. And if Jeff Ireland is operating this off season under some weird, anti-Ireland "we won't be outbid" credo, then perhaps they even get him on top of Wallace.
didn“t we already assign that kind of money or even more into the OL some years ago, i rather put it into a position that touches the football, so hell yeah do it
Id be okay with grabbing Eifert with #12 overall versus getting Cook for anything resembling 6+ million per year.
Here's another question. If we can't protect Ryan Tannehill any better than we did against the 49ers and Patriots (Week 17), will it matter that we have Mike Wallace running deep routes? Aren't people trying to explain that the reason Wallace got less productive in 2012 was because the offensive line couldn't pass protect for Big Ben?
I'm talking about cap hit. You don't just magically make salary disappear. A reduced cap hit in year 1 means increased cap hits in years 2 thru 5.
