Because you can find guys like Wallace. He's limited and overrated. Pittsburgh gets it - it's why they signed Antonio Brown.
Why do you keep saying this when you're constantly corrected? It's a little grating and kinda brings credibility into question. They offered Mike Wallace a larger contract than they offer Brown. Wallace rejected his, while Brown signed his. Now, in my line of work, we typically only see people who receive offers higher than other offers as more desired
It's the first time I've noted it. And we don't know if that is true. Thanks for being a smartass - it's not necessary.
They offered Wallace a contract which he refused, then they signed Brown. Why do people skip over that crucial fact every time they want to denigrate Wallace is beyond me. I wonder how much of Brown's performance was due to Wallace lifting coverage the past few years. We'll see soon enough. EDIT: Just saw your post above. Ok, you never read it before. But now you have They offered wallace somewhere around $8m/year. He said hell no and held out. So they threw the money at Brown and told Wallace to pound sand. That's the Steeler way.
Couldn't that just easily mean they knew Brown would sign for less? For all any of us know they'd be willing to pay Brown $60 million but knew he'd take less and they Wallace would want as much as possible so they offered him the max they thought he was worth.
I don't think the Steelers sign both Wallace and Brown ever. If they offer Wallace $10M, they offer Brown his $8M, they would do what us Fans are calling the Dolphins not to do. Spend almost $20M on one position. The fact remains, they offered Wallace first. That's all we're pointing out. We don't have to dig any deeper. A complaint about Wallace is that they chose Brown over him. Which isn't true. Wallace forced their hand. The Steelers aren't one to chase players. That's been their MO for years.
He's the one that alluded to a guy he knows the Dolphins are after whose name begins with a consonant and doesn't play wide receiver.
Let's be fair though, Pitt did reportedly offer him $50 million over 5 years before he rejected the offer and then that's when they folded up the tables and extended Brown for $7 million a year.
Thank you. I've seen a couple of well respected posters claim that Pitt realized that Brown was more valuable and that's why they signed him and haven't signed Wallace. I had thought the deal they offered was $55 million over 5 years, but $50 over 5 is still a LOT of money. Obviously they think he's a very good player. Not overrated.
Yeah they thought him valuable but because the deal was never consummated we never got any details on it. Could've been a deal that paid him more along the lines of $9 million a year until the final year which is never meant to be paid, e.g. We just don't know.
Not being snarky, but does anyone recall the last time the Fins actually signed their #1 target in free agency?
What does that mean? The first guy they went after? The most expensive guy they went after? How can you even confirm it? It's possible when they went after Karlos Dansby they got turned down by someone they were after first?
This is what I will do because of Alens statement...go watch more isolation pays on Wallace, use the rewind pass for the steelers, and try to see where he's coming from, his reputation gets that respect where I have to make sure for myself that this guy is worth what he's asking for before I talk with so little room for a mistake..now you may have already done that, then so be it, but from experience, when he goes out on a limb like that its because there's something there worth noting..jmo.
So there is a chance that Miles Austin makes it to free agency as a cap cut soon. Am I crazy thinking that he would be a better WR here in Miami than Jennings? Younger, cheaper, and the drop off if any is minimal..... Thoughts?
I've read that in the past. Still don't know if it's true. Regardless, it doesn't change my opinion on Wallace as a receiver and route-runner. He's limited and people can say what they want but the tape backs it up in my opinion. I know we all se different things when watching players -- I respect everyone's opinion except those who are rude -- and I am fine with that. But in my opinion, Wallace can be found via draft, which is cheaper, and is not the ideal receiver. He can blow the lid off of coverage - sure - but you don't need to sacrifice a majority of your route tree for that when you can win vertically without speed.
I think Ireland will be on him like flies on ****. Ireland selected him IIRC, or if he didn't, he certainly had a hand in it. As such, it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if we went after Miles Austin. It would be Ireland's way of giving Philbin what he wants, but also a player he has a history with.
Important to note that it wasn't Ireland that did any of the legwork on Austin coming out. It was Brian Gaine. But Ireland I believe made an offer to trade for him in 2009.
alen, I've linked your excellent article twice now, but it appears that some on here want to ignore it because it doesn't talk glowingly of Mike Wallace and identifies his weakness -- a weakness that makes him an extremely poor fit for Miami's offense.
No he was a playmaker and a very good WR, who we kept for a short time and failed to replace. We are never big players in FA, so I'll say it again its a NON Dolphin move.
Do me a favor and don't post it. I'd rather they didn't read it, honestly. One should form their own opinion and stick to it. If one believes Wallace is quality and I'm wrong, then I respect them for believing it.
Don't say all that. My opinion is the same as all others. Its just written word. You can watch the same game and see different things. For instance, I can see the issues that I mention in his game against Philadelphia this past season. They played soft squat coverage on him and some press. He had some issues with it. You may not think so.
I like Wallace, I feel like he can become a better all around WR while still being the vertical threat Miami has been missing in some time. Is he a good fit? That's a question that will be answered via FA. If we make a legitimate offer to Wallace to me it's obvious Philbin believes he IS a good fit. If we lowball him and move on (ala Matt Flynn) that will answer the question of if he is a good fit or not. Again I'm in Wallace's corner as a player, but at the same time I won't be frustrated if we don't get him...if you catch my drift.
I don't think he'll be better. He'll only regress. He's not a limited route runner because he has poor technique -- it's a physical limitation. He's a straight-line athlete and as the years pass by in what could be some sort of mega contract, he's going to regress because he'll get slower. Speed is the name of his game momentarily and as he loses it, he'll become a lesser player. It's like a basketball player that is an OK shooter and just relies on his quickness to get to the basket. As he ages, he'll be less of a threat at the basket and because his shot is a mixed bag, he won't be consistent. Just my view, of course. Doesn't mean I'll be right. It's all projection at the end of the day.
Oh, look. Greg Cosell thinks the same thing. http://network.yardbarker.com/nfl/a..._atop_dolphins_recommended_wish_list/12861484 So, even Cosell thinks he's not going to be consistently effective when running intermediate digs and short crossing routes. It just so happens that those two routes are mainstays in the Dolphins offense.
I know someone mentioned earlier that Wallace is a quality comeback route runner because of his speed already threatening cornerbacks. That's simply not true. He takes too long to break off his route and break down. He "motors down", as scouts like to say, and that's problematic. It's like a quarterback throwing with an elongated motion. Gives DB's more time to break to the ball.
I understand you're point I just disagree with it. Players can develop especially 26 year olds without many offseasons. To you're basketball analogy guys who lose their athletic ability develop into very good jump shooters in time. Look no further than Kobe, Lebron and Michael Jordan.
sorry, I was just being honest, hopefully that's the way it came across...I wasn't checkin the dude, just being honest to what I do when you make a statement with that kind of magnitude, I go back and check my own sh&$... Doesn't mean you'll change my opinion, but I want to make sure I've covered my all my bases before I would go against the grain like that.
Well as with the Matt Flynn situation, I'll trust Philbins input on rather he can make Wallace into a more complete WR. Most people thought it was a great "fit" for Matt and him signing with Miami was a foregone conclusion. But obviously Joe didn't think so, and he was right.
Didn't think we would sign Flynn at that pivitol time after watching his college and pro reps...we were in search of a franchise caliber skillset, Flynn was not that, and we happen to have an incredible draft of QB prospects leading up to the last draft..good coach/ GM decision.
