Ireland and Philbin wouldn't touch him with a ten foot pole. I'd bet they wouldn't even offer him a vet minimum contract.

What is amazing we believe these guys. Omar is nutty and has a man crush on Wallace...and I speculate that is how this whole thing started.

That's quite hypocritical coming from someone who has dedicated half his post count to whining about Jeff Ireland ad nauseam.

You and these other newbie pudden-heads seem to want to be confrontational just for the sake of it even though Section didn't post his comment with you newbies in mind, and he shouldn't have to either. If you guys have a problem with him publicly notifying his fellow long-time posters about tidbits to come, then do what you do best and start a rant about it in the SoapBox forum so the rest of us aren't bogged down by your annoying inappreciativeness.

    Carry on.

If we tried to trade draft picks for Maclin and Jones then I don't see why that mentality wouldn't still be on the table regarding Cruz if the price is right.

No, I'm sure you'll have Mike Wallace on the show. I'm just not sure there will be a tremendous amount of value to it. The normal sports bar with a microphone song and dance bracketed by herbal boner supplement and and CASH 4 GOLD advertisements to the "entertainment" of the thirty people who listen to AM radio in 2013.

Hank Goldberg wasn't good at radio or particularly entertaining, but he legitimately had sources, and had some reason to be on the air. That's more than you can say about pretty much anyone since Jim Mandich died.

I'm an instructor for a medical program. I've also taught high school History.

I like Michael Johnson, but given the depth at DE in this draft, why is our top FA target a DE?

It just doesn't seem like the most efficient use of resources to me.

Wow ... Johnson and Wake. That would be a terrifying prospect for QBs, particularly for one whose name rhymes with Mom Grady.

Snag Johnson and Jennings (whose price should be much more reasonable than Wallace) and trade down in the first for Eifert, and I would call it a most fortuitous offseason.

If you think what you'd have to pay a good OT compared to what you could offer a DE of Johnson's ilk, financially it may make sense. The other thing is people need to look past the position a little bit more. How many DE's available in the first are actually the same player Johnson is? Thats the question that needs asking. How many of those players are there and can they produce now, or do they like Johnson need a bit more time to learn the position and the role within this defense?

Whereas a OT that fits in a zone blocking scheme may find the transition easier. Something to think about.

DaMontre Moore is not the answer to my question. He's not big enough and would need to gain 20 lbs at minimum. There is a certain skillset Coyle and for that matter his 'mentor' (for lack of a better word) Zimmer prefer. The only other guy off the top of my head would be Anthony Spencer, but he's not nearly as athletic. A guy that we could draft is Millaciah Goodman, he's about 270 and can run. Check out his game against FSU and see him drop into coverage and remind yourself he's 270 lbs doing that and then consider his length and wingspan - something Jeff adores.

Getting an OT at 12 means only paying him 4-5 mill off the top of my head, whereas in FA they will much more. Its availability to talent and cost coming into play here IMHO.

There are going to be limited successes in both free agency and the draft at any given position regardless of what the appearances are when the off-season starts. You've got a certain price point, someone who can play the right side, etc. and so on.

DE should not be our top priority, but Michael Johnson would be one hell of a get. As much as we need WR, DB, and TE help... I approve of this course of action.

My first guess would not be DE.. although someone like MJ would be sweet, and i'd love to have just an abusive D line, thats just my gut. I mean its JI, and with his recent confession of his mancrush on OV... although just media talk, It has to be atleast somewhat telling. I don't know. I wouldn't be surprised if he just sticks him there as a starter and says "There, I fixed it".

Again, I would like the move. But, If I had to put money on a position thats not a WR, it would probably be TE or something in the d secondary.

Late edit: As a noob here, I must admit I think I love this thread. :chuckle:

Irelands public comments about players usually turn out meaning the opposite. In other words having Johnson means Vernon can come on and in 2 years or so as Wake begins to tail off a bit (which is likely due to age) Vernon who needs time can THEN slide into a more prominent role. One he had last year, but proved he wasn't quite ready for. He needs a season or two to get things down and given how much he needs to learn, assuming he can take in and then use each move in the right circumstance may be a bit much.

I see it in kids all the time. There is a period where they can take it in, but there a lag between taking it in and actually having it show up on the field. There is a lag betwen one and the other.

I would love that however, IF we do sign Jennings the ideal scenario would be. Trade down from 12 to late teens. Draft Patterson to pair with Jennings. Now we have 3 3rd round picks. Trade a second and a 3rd to move back into the first and draft Eifert. Now we still have the same number of picks as before, we pick up 2 huge offensive playmakers, and still can address whatever we want with our other picks.

Sorry to get off topic here but speculating on what Jeffy has been saying all offseason so far I believe that this FA to be named later is going to be either a DB or a DE. Michael Johnson and Cliff Avril seem like the logical fits. As for CB it could be either Grimes, Houston or Cox. WR is too much of an obvious need at this point so I think all this Mike Wallace hoopla is indeed to let them operate behind the scenes for what they truly want to do.

They won't identify a single team though, that'd give the NFL too much pressure to act. I think as long as they keep it vague, they have plausible deniability with regards to "I was just building up my brand, hoping to stir up interest. It was all made up" Versus specifically saying "Yeah the Miami Dolphins have been going after me hard"

The flaw in this plan that I see immediately is that Patterson may not even be @ #12 as it stands with his he is wowing scouts with his phenomenal ceiling. Now you're talking about him falling somewhere in the late teens? That's where you're picking in the 1st if you're getting a 3rd rounder as compensation.

Why are we trading back in this draft when we are already lush with draft picks at the risk of losing a player you single out as worthy of your 1st rounder? That seems foolish. Go grab him.

So then what do we do at WR/TE?

    Second and third rounders?

To me, we need immediate impact at those positions, which I'd rather fill through FA.

I agree with this to a certain point, but if we sign Jennings to a relatively modest 8 mil per year, wouldn't that fill a void? You can then attack the 2nd round in a very rich WR draft?

#12 overall last year, Fletcher Cox, signed a 4 year deal worth $10.7x guaranteed. So you're getting a guy for 2.4-2.5 mil a year cap hit versus 7 mil a year.

I see where you are going with this. While he might not be available, I think it all boils down to if we resign hartline. IF we do, and IF we sign Jennings I don't think Patterson will be our 1st round priority. I listened to a podcast the other day about Patterson and the guy was super high on him. I believe that Patterson would be 2 years at least before he contributed majorly. I like Patton in the 2nd round much more at this point. If that is our focus on draft day, I see no major flaw with trading back in the 1st. Again it all depends on what we do with hartline and jennings but I believe trading back would be imperative if we did both of those things. It would allow us to draft either Banks or Rhodes who I am both very high on. Again we wont know until FA starts what our plan will be.

...and we are not a radio show. We are a TV show. on CBS4, Saturdays, at 11 am.

and yeah..Wallace is not gonna blurt stuff on the air, and truth be told, I hate interviews, but he is topical and fans want to hear from him. But my BS barometer is top notch, having worked in construction my whole life. I'll know what is real and what's not by talking to him.

I don't know about generalized statements of where the value is, etc.

There's a lot of DE value in this Draft. There is talent to consider at 12 overall. Dion Jordan certainly reminds me of Michael Johnson in a lot of ways. If you don't take Tank Carradine at 12 then you're not getting him at 42 IMO and he's a wonderful talent. Jarvis Jones could be a great pick. There's talent to be had below that. You could imagine Alex Okafor lasting to the 42nd or 54th pick and he's fantastic. Datone Jones is a very interesting player. Corey Lemonier, Devin Taylor and Cornelius Washington are interesting.

There's a lot of OT value in this Draft. Some at 12 overall. I think we assume Luke Joeckel will go 1st but I don't think that's a safe assumption. Eric Fisher or Lane Johnson could overtake him. All three are excellent. Lane Johnson is my favorite. But there are some really interesting options below them. Menelik Watson is superb. D.J. Fluker is superb. Xavier Nixon is very, very good.

Account me a doubter of these theories that Jake Long as a 27 year old that has been in the league only 5 years is only 1 or 2 years from retirement or being relegated to Marc Colombo status. I don't understand the Tony Boselli references unless you can reference specific injuries on Long that will present hefty problems in the future. Tony Boselli retired for a SPECIFIC reason. He had a shoulder problem and he got it fixed, and before he went under the knife the Jacksonville doctor (who I believe has other complaints against him) convinced Tony to have an unnecessary surgery on his other healthy shoulder to clean it up. He botched the surgery on the other shoulder and it was THAT shoulder that was responsible for Boselli's retirement. It never healed. At first he refused to sue the doctor but I think he might have done so later. He certainly made it known he feels like that doctor singlehandedly retired him.

Jake Long has one SLIGHTLY ABOVE MEDIOCRE (not anywhere even close to 'bad') year in a new style of offensive line play (yes I realized he played zone in college but he hasn't played it in the pros) and suddenly he's finished. And it's not like he missed whole seasons the last two years. He averaged 1100 snaps his first three years and then played 801 & 745 snaps the last two years. It happens.

No matter how high I am on Lane Johnson he could show up to the pros and be nothing better than a Marshall Newhouse, for example. And you'd have used a 12 overall pick on that. So let's not pretend there's no uncertainty-based discount when it comes to replacing Jake Long.

Do you save money? Yes. Probably about $7 million per year. And what do you use that on? Free agents that have approximately the same bust rate as draft picks? So let's not pretend we're getting dollar-for-dollar on that, either.

I don't think there are easy answers here.
