JETS FIRE REX RYAN AND COACHING STAFF​

New York (GML-AP) – It didn't take long for the New York Jets General Manager S.C. Hisno to make his mark as Rex Ryan was hired. Ryan was original kept on board for one more year, but it seems the coach and new general manager did not see eye to eye. Unfortunately for the recently hired coordinators they will be looking for work elsewhere as well. "He had two good years but hasn't done much since.", Hisno said during a conference call to announce the news.

Some names that have popped up include Josh McDaniels, Pat Shurmur and Matt Patricia who all have New England ties though they appear to be long shots as Hisno wants to make his own mark. "I think the world of them in the Patriots organization, but what you don't do is Mangini another coaches staff". Instead those within the inner circle of the Jets managerial staff are contacting coaches with ties to the Jets organization and even ex-players.

"I like Glenn, he's doing some good things where he is and showed that he can work hard as a seventh rounder. The same should be true as a coach."

Some former Jets quarterbacks have been seen entering and leaving Jets office, but do Glenn Foley or Brooks Bollinger have enough to entice Hisno to hire them as the next Jets Head Coach?

Peter Kipers: Early Mock Draft (Preview)



#1 - Kansas City Chiefs
Geno Smith, QB – West Virginia

So the story goes Matt “Stomping On Sand” Cassels wasn't the quarterback is was made out to be when he took the Patriots to 11-5 in the absence of Tom Brady. So far this offseason the Chiefs have watched as Josh Freeman, Cam Newton, Matthew Stafford and the man himself Tom Brady find new homes and in the not so distant future they'll watch Joe Flacco receive the franchise tag and disappear before their eyes, so for now they will entrust their future on a quarterback that is a combination of Sam Bradford and Donovan McNabb.

#2 - New England Patriots (from Jacksonville)
Luke Joeckel, OT – Texas A&M

Goodbye Joe Montan...sorry I mean Tom Brady and hello the Mallet era, or should I say the dawn ofthe AFC Ryan division. Do they really trust a quarterback from Arkansas? No they don't but they won't draft a quarterback here instead they will opt to anchor the left side of the offensive line with a can't miss Left tackle prospect in Luke Joeckel. Solder gets moved to the right side and you've got one hell of a bookend that will give Mallett all the time in the world to snort a line and toss an interception.

#3 - Oakland Raiders
Mike Glennon, QB, North Carolina State

He's nearly 6'6 and has a strong arm, no he's not their first overall bust from a few years ago but he's not Flacco either. Glennon has good accuracy but his decision making will get him in trouble. The Raiders has holes all over the place but they know they're just spinning the wheels with Palmer under center, so they bring in the guy who'll spin their wheels for the next 3-5 seasons.

#4 - Carolina Panthers (from Philadelphia)
Star Lotulelei, DT – Utah

The middle of the Panthers defensive line isn't particularly scary so they add the best NT prospect in the draft, who's quick enough and strong enough to cause some problems for opposing offensive lines. He can get under the pad and push his man back and what better way to get practice then by going against the a bunch of pushovers like the Panthers O-Line. They go with a safe pick, because they are upset Oakland plucked Glennon away from them. If they were picking later in the first round Nassib with be the choice here as insurance for the pivot position.

#5 - Detroit Lions
Dee Milliner, CB, Alabama

If there's one thing you could do on the Lions and that was throw, they've yet to fix the defensive backfield but with their first pick in the top ten they add an immediate starter with Milliner. Sure they have issues at quarterback now since swapping Stafford for Skeletor, oh I'm sorry. I'm being told that Skeletor is a work of fiction. Just like the idea of John Skelton being a quarterback. Back to point, they need a quarterback but they don't feel there's one worth a top ten pick.

#6 - Miami Dolphins (from Cleveland)
Robert Woods, WR – Southern California

Jake Long is walking, but the new Dolphins GM thinks the draft is deep enough with lineman that he opts to add another receiving threat after missing out on both Jennings and Bowe in the free agent market. USC receivers haven't made the impact one would expect from them in recent drafts but Woods is more complete than his predecessors and comes into a situation where Torrey Smith will be drawing the double teams. Worst case scenario this is a Limas Sweed pick, and it's not like this GM is known for any outlandish pick like that.

#7 - Detroit Lions (from Arizona)
Jarvis Jones, LB – Georgia

They shore up their cornerback group, but now add the best linebacking prospect who can play inside or outside. There's a new rule and that is you can never have too many linebackers that can rush a quarterback. We think he'd be better off adding Kenny Vaccaro at safety but it's not like it's a passing league or anything, especially when you're new quarterback is going to just give it back to the other team every two or three downs.

#8 - Buffalo Bills
Bjoern Werner, DE – Florida State

The Bills are thankful for the slight freefall that Werner has taken and continue to add to their supposed dominate D-Line. Last year with the addition of Mario Williams the fanbase was thinking playoffs with the ability to pressure their rivals offenses however it didn't work out that way. So now they complete the line and once again on paper it looks scary with Mario Williams, Kyle Williams, Marcel Dareus, Bjoern Werner. Whether it becomes a reality, it still won't fill up the Toronto Skydome come next season.

#9 - New York Jets
Keenan Allen, WR – California

You'd expect the Jets to help their defensive backs after trading away both Revis and Cromartie but they need more help with their offense. Unable to throw or run, the Jets add one of the most complete receivers in the draft and have an athletic but young group of guys. Expect this to pay dividends down the line.

#10 - Tennessee Titans
Damontre Moore, DE – Texas A&M

The Titans could use an offensive guard but their defense was suspect and ranked lower than the IQ of the Rams GM. However they get one of the best Defensive Ends here and he should help create a better pass rush. More good news, he can add to the frame and can play end or linebacker.

#11 - New York Jets (from San Diego)
Ryan Nassib, QB – Syracuse

The Jets strike again in the first round. After adding to their offense with a receiver they call the number of their future signal caller by selecting the next starting Ryan in the AFC East. Nassib brings some toughness to the Jets quarterback position, but might not be much of an upgrade over Sanchez... BUT... he's still better than Sanchez.

#12 - Cleveland Browns (from Miami)
Eric Fisher, OT – Central Michigan

They said goodbye to Joe Thomas as they continue to remake their 3-4 defense by adding Solai and Clay Matthews in a couple trades early on, so it's on natural for them to replace Thomas with a good left tackle prospect in Fisher. Yes I understand the strange connection, his name is Fisher and Thomas went fishing on draft day, but what matters is... Fisher won't be Joe Thomas. He'll hold the line, but he's not a pro bowler. We'll see if the defense takes them to the playoffs. It certainly won't be the offense.

 

#13 - Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Xavier Rhodes, CB – Floridat State

They traded away Talib during the season, and just dealt Eric Wright earlier leaving them open for a need at corner. The Bucs stay in state and grab Florida States Rhodes, who has great size and could be considered a small linebacker with the cover skills of a corner. Best comparison would be Sean Smith of the Dolphins. Will it be enough, I doubt it so expect a second corner taken in round two or three.

#14 - Carolina Panthers
DJ Fluker, OT – Alabama

It's no secret that the Panthers are actively trying to move Jordan Gross and his large contract, but what happens once they do? They could go for a middle of the road free agent to man the blindside for the season but in reality they reach out and grab the man mountain that is DJ Fluker. He came in at 355 pounds to the senior bowl and looked good. Fluker also had the longest arms at the senior bowl. No Matt Barkley sighting yet.

#15 - New Orleans Saints
Dion Jordan, DE/LB – Oregon

The Saints are always quiet in the offseason not doing much to change the team during trades, and make minimal splashes in free agency. What you can expect is for them to make big moves in the draft. They don't call New Orleans the big easy for nothing. Coming there way is The Big Duck. Jordan measures close to 6'7 but at only 247 pounds he's best projected as an outside linebacker in a 3-4, which happens to be what the Saints are looking to change their base defense to. Will it work? Do ducks fly? Well Jordan does because he plays well in coverage but is underrated in his pursuit in the run game.

#16 - St. Louis Rams
Matt Barkley, QB – Southern California

For suspect class of signal callers, we're about to see the fourth quarterback selected in the first half of round one. There's no denying the Rams GM is a California kind of guy, what with his In N' Out burgers and lassez faire accounting ways it only makes sense for Barkley to push out Bradford. I heard the Rams were looking for three first rounders, starting wide receiver and All Pro linebacker for Bradford and in his mind that's still giving away Sammy. The Rams are happy that Barkley sunk his draft stock because he could have been a top three pick last year. He's been in a pro offense and I blame USC's coach more than I do Barkley for their underachieving.

#17 - Pittsburgh Steelers
Kenny Vaccaro, S – Texas

The Steelers defense looked old and beaten most of the time last season, and injuries kept Ryan Clark and Troy Polamalu apart, except for a handful of games. It's too early to take any of the other cornerbacks as they will be dealing with issues there as well. Instead they'll bring in the defensive quarterback of the Longhorns. He could start right away, or bring him along slowly. Either way this is a winning pick.

#18 - Dallas Cowboys
Barkevious Mingo, DE/LB – Louisiana State

Where is the Cowboys GM? We're not sure but the Texas Rangers have been sent to find him, or the very least his cell phone with the multiple trade offers he's passed up on his latest offseason scouting trip to... the Saloon. Last I heard he was watching a Tarantino movie with a bucket full of suds and a bunch of singles in one hand. The other hand? He turned in a card to bring in Anthony Spencers replacement, why Mingo? They love Mingo fighting down South... or in Texas, wherever he is.

#19 - New York Giants
Chance Warmack, OG – Alabama

Another Crimson Tide off the board, this time Chance is the first offensive guard taken as the Giants look to fill the spot opposite Chris Snee. Heck they might even look at replacing that contract of Snees. As a first team All-American and one of Bama's three captains he's got the leadership the Giants want and is one of the better all around athletes at his position with great technique. One of the Giants strong points has been their offensive line and they add a strong piece for the future.

020 - Chicago Bears
Lane Johnson, OT – Oklahoma

One of the Bears weakness has been their offensive line, luckily for them they manage to snag one of the top tier tackles in the draft. A former quarterback and tightend the Bears could be a little more creative on offense as well under Marc Trestman. This is a no brainer and solves one of their most glaring holes... no, not Culter.

#21 - Minnesota Vikings (from Cincinnati)
Kawann Short, DT – Purdue

Big Kevin Williams isn't getting any younger and they've gotten by with a platoon of players in the other defensive tackle position. So the Vikings bring in a guy with a large wingspan that can help bat down some balls and possibly replace Williams down the line. Another option would be to select either Matt Elam or Desmond Trufant to continue building the foundations for a strong defensive backfield which their defensive can benefit from.

#22 - St. Louis Rams (from Washington)
Zach Ertz, TE – Stanford

The Rams got their quarterback, and after trading Bradford for defensive pieces they return to their offense by bring in a big body tight end that caught close to 900 yards at Stanford. He can provide a safety net for Barkley. Why not a receiver like Cordarrelle Patterson? They've already spent a pick last year on a developing receiver. Patterson may be physically ready but his route running needs work.
