Let's assume the Dolphins focus purely on re-signing everyone in free agency, which means Jake Long is back, Randy Starks is back, Brian Hartline is back, Reggie Bush is back, Sean Smith is back, even Chris Clemons is back. The only exception being Anthony Fasano whom I think we've heard reliably they intent to let walk. And Tony McDaniel, if he counts. We'll also assume a release of Richard Marshall. But essentially with everyone back the only glaring hole absolute must would be at tight end because we literally only have two guys. The need areas would still involve WR and CB mostly, as we've yet to replace Vontae Davis and Brandon Marshall. So at that point, why not... R1 012.) CB Johnthan Banks, Mississippi State R2 042.) DE Cornellius Carridine, Florida State R2 056.) WR Stedman Bailey, West Virginia R3 077.) OG Brian Winters, Kent State R3 082.) TE Travis Kelce, Cincinnati R4 108.) WR Marquise Goodwin, Texas R5 139.) DS Shamarko Thomas, Syracuse R7 203.) RB Dennis Johnson, Arkansas R7 210.) DE Travis Johnson, San Jose State This is a draft where I would love to trade off some assets for a bunch of little 6th and 7th round picks giving you the rights to all kinds of players that fall into that area of the draft. I think that area could be crowded with some talent.
Hah, I keep forgetting. Actually I just copied and pasted the original poster's selections and made some edits, forgot to spell check Banks' weird-@ss first name.
I think that would be an interesting way to go about your business in the first year. I think right away you've got Dimitri Patterson manning the nickel (as he should be) and Johnthan Banks starting opposite Sean Smith. The Dolphins want to add takeaways, well Banks is the most takeaway prone corner available, IMO. Keeping Chris Clemons alleviates some pressure on the secondary to replace a safety with a high valued asset, allowing you to take a chance on a guy in Shamarko Thomas that may not have had a high number of takeaways in college but has 4.3 speed and is a smoother, more solid, instinctive athlete than Clemons. He was the best player I saw at Shrine practices. He has some Bob Sanders and T.J. Ward in him. And if you've still got both Clemons and Jones then you can experiment with Shamarko a bit and figure out where best he fits, what roles he's most comfortable with. Cornellius Carridine could very well end up the best value in the Draft. I don't give two ****s about Jeff Ireland's philosophy that you use the picks in the top three rounds on guys that can help immediately and then wait until round four to start taking developmental risks. You don't pass on a value like Carridine IF he makes it to #42 overall, and as I'm playing in fantasyland right now, I'm going to pretend he does. Thing about it is, if we need a rotational pass rusher right away, you can get that. Take a Travis Johnson all the way at the end of the Draft and I think you've got someone you can toss on the field on obvious pass downs and actually impact the game as a rusher. That will help Carridine's having to sit for at least half the season go down a little easier. To help a wide receivers unit that is still stuck in neutral with Brian Hartline and Davone Bess, I'd look at Stedman Bailey who can provide touchdowns and excitement, as well as Marquise Goodwin who can give you blazing speed that defenses fear. Goodwin isn't just a Gates. He did things at a higher level. He's more like a Jacoby Ford. Down the road you could imagine Goodwin manning the slot a lot in place of Davone Bess. At tight end, you lose an all-around guy in Anthony Fasano, I think you replace with an all-around guy in Travis Kelce. He shouldered the load at Cincinnati and he's actually pretty athletic. Good blocker too. He might be forgotten about a little bit but he's a good player. I'm quickly becoming a fan of Brian Winters as a guy that we might be able to plug in at guard at some point. He's got a nasty attitude but also has enough mobility to get out in space. He gets behind his pads and delivers blows. He reminds me of a cross between Eric Steinbach and Richie Incognito. Lastly you have Dennis Johnson who I think could make an impact on every down as a tailback. He's definitely got third down ability, but I think he's got more than that. He's like a bigger version of Darren Sproles.
I'm just not a Phillip Thomas fan..Ck's one of the best, but I would disagree with him on that player..
I don't see us resigning Bush, Long, Hartline and Smith personally, infact I only see Hartline and possibly Bush.
That draft chart game has got me all freakin annoyed, i dont know our exact number slots where we pick in each round, im using the +5 -5 theory,I keep trying to look at both sites, ours and theirs, and every time I come back to ours my page refreshes, I've tried to make my fantasy draft with that damn theory 20 times and I'm given up..lol I think I can get Jordan..Eifert..Lacy..Terrance Williams and Rambo using that thing..lol Draft porn..
My mock draft, version 2.0 12.) Alex Okafor, DE, Texas 42.) Jordan Poyer, CB, Oregon State 56.) Markus Wheaton, WR, Oregon State 77.) Stedman Bailey, WR, West Va 82.) Robert Lester, SS, Alabama 108.) David Quessenberry, OT, San Jose State 139.) Adrian Bushell, CB, Louisville 203.) Levine Toilolo, TE, Stanford 210.) Cierre Wood, RB, Notre Dame
OK, I will take my shot at it: 12.) WR, Cordarelle Patterson 42.) CB, Jordan Poyer 56.) WR, Stedman Bailey 77.) OT, Brennan Williams 82.) LB, Gerald Hodges 108.) CB, Darius Slay 139.) OG, Omoregie Uzzi 203.) TE, Levine Toilolo 210.) RB, Marcus Lattimore Thinking: 1. Patterson just fills a need and he is exactly what the Dolphins offense is missing with his ability to make plays after the catch. He would be starting across from Jennings in my world. 2a. Poyer fills a need at CB considering Smith is likely to walk. Unlike Smith Poyer has shown the ability to finish plays 2b. Bailey would play in the slot and once again is needed for his ability to create after the catch 3a. If the Fins can not come to terms with Long they are going to have to take a tackle. Can go into the season with the rest of the guys they currently have on the roster. 3b. Hodges adds depth to a thin linebacking corps 4. Slay is a guy that put together a nice senior season with 5 INTs. Seems to be another guy that can finish play and create turnovers 5. Uzzi is a mobile OG that can be put in the LG position allowing Incognito to move to his move natural position of RG. Jerry is not a bad reserve OL type guy even though he doesnt fit the system 7a. Toilolo big bodied TE that can create miss matches in the redzone. Needs a year or two to get stronger (whats up with Stanfords conditioning program?) 7b. Not sure Lattimore is there at this point of the draft but if he is I would take him and tell him he is not playing in 2013. Give him a full year to rehab and you may have a solution at RB.
I just used the one supplied in the OP. Then just use the CBS Sportline overall rankings and put the players in the mock draft at spot equal to, or above where they fell in the overall rankings. Sure, other site's rankings are going to be different, but for the sake of consistency for all of us, we should all use the same one. It is all just for fun anyway.
or 12.) WR, Cordarelle Patterson 42.) CB, Jordan Poyer 56.) WR, Stedman Bailey 77.) DE, Trent Murphy 82.) OT, Brennan Williams 108.) CB, Darius Slay 139.) OG, Omoregie Uzzi 203.) TE, Levine Toilolo 210.) RB, Marcus Lattimore
I like him better than Rambo. I decided Okafor is more polished than Zeke, so a better choice at the top. I decided that with Jonas Gray, it's like we already have one rookie RB, and wanted to put more emphasis on corner back. Also added in an OL. Woods looks like a good value in the 7th. The only thing I do not like is not getting either of the top 2 TEs, but ya can't have it all I guess. I like 2.0 better.
Going by the rules in the OT (not necessarily who I think will realistically be there): 12.) DE, Dion Jordan 42.) CB, Jordan Poyer (tough to not pick Terrence Williams here) 56.) LB, Arthur Brown 77.) WR, Stedman Bailey 82.) S, Bacarri Rambo 108.) WR, Chris Harper 139.) QB, EJ Manuel 203.) TE, Joseph Fauria 210.) RB, Mike James This is also assuming Wallace/Jennings/Bowe are signed in FA.
Lester looked terrible in one on one coverage today, waiting for players to get into your body before you make your first move is no way to go thru life son.
All Star game practices are not the end all be all when it comes to evaluating these guys. It's just another tool. It would be foolish to lower a player much on your draft board based on an All Star game IMO. Lester was a pretty good ball hawk at free safety over his career, and that matters much more to me than 1 week at Mobile.
So we are 27th in the NFL in scoring offense and the first three picks are defense? Other then Bailey this draft does nothing for the offense…. nothing personal… but me no likes
Purely for giggles as this stuff pre free agency is fairly pointless: 1 (12) Xavier Rhodes CB FSU 2 (46) DeAndre Hopkins WR Clemson 2 (56) Larry Warford OG Kentucky 3 (77) Aaron Dobson WR Marshall 3 (82) David Bahktiari OT/G Colorado 4 (108) Gavin Escobar TE SDSU 5 (139) Devin Taylor DE South Carolina 7 (203) Tyrann Mathieu DB LSU 7 (210) Jordan Rodgers QB Vanderbilt
The first 3 picks are defense, but IMO there is fantastic value in getting Bailey at 77, Harper at 108, Fauria at 203, and James at 210. I like both WRs a good deal. Terrence Williams was very nearly my pick at 42, but I think CB will be a bigger need come draft day. I think the Dolphins can really make their mark on offense in free agency and supplement it in the draft. This draft is under the assumption that the Dolphins sign a front line WR and they could very well add a TE and/or OL help. I would have thrown a lineman in there, but I just don't know enough about them. At the end of the day you have to take value and I think that's what I did here. Jordan can be a dynamic pass rusher which is something the Dolphins need. Poyer is a good CB IMO and is something Miami will need badly, especially if Smith leaves. And I think Arthur Brown is a fantastic player and could go as high as the 1st round, so him being there at 56 was too good to pass up.
I would go: 12 - Ezekiel Ansah 42 - Kyle Long 56 - Stedman Bailey 77 - Marcus Lattimore 82 - Ryan Swope 108 - Tyrann Mathieu 139 - Ray Ray Armstrong 203 - Levin Toilolo 210 - Vaughn Telemaque
Here is a new one. 12.Jonhathan Banks CB 42.Kyle Long, T/G 56.Quinton Patton WR 77.Stedman Bailey WR 82.Tank Carradine DE 108.Brian Winters G 139.Brandon McGee CB 203.Vance McDonald TE 210.Kerwynn Williams RB
There's an adage I've heard from some football expert types, that goes something like "a player can't lower his draft value by playing in an all star game. Only raise it or have it remain the same." Not sure I totally agree, nor do I recall who all said it, but I've heard it more than once over the years.
