didn't Banks pay the same respect to Patton? BTW, not sure why Patton isn't getting late 1st round consideration.... or at least early 2nd.
I really like Patton but I can't draft him ahead of guys like Hopkins, Williams, Bailey, Wheaton and Justin Hunter.
One comment I meant to make earlier and forgot to is this. I think CK mentioned early on that Rishard Matthews didn't exactly pull a Miles Austin and do much with his opportunity to play this year. Well, Miles really didn't get an opportunity till his second season, and even then, it was more flashes that lead to him going into his third season as a starter. Matthews and Austin actually put up nearly identical numbers during their rookie seasons: Miles Austin in 2007: 3 games, 10 targets, 7.6 yards per target, 50% catch rate Rishard Matthews in 2012: 6 games, 20 targets, 7.6 yards per target, 54% catch rate Now, this means very little in the grand scheme of things unless Matthews progresses the way Miles Austin did, and I'm not really comparing the two players as far as their talent goes.
Oy vey.. Did you honestly think I was being serious? Like, his chiropractor from the capital of Greenland, Nuuk, are you kidding me? I tried to make that as impossible as I could to believe, while still keeping the masturbatory tone of the posts about SOME GUY'S NICKNAME. And the bait was taken. My post. Your head.
I know you are knew to this site, but Boomer happens to be one of the best draft gurus out there. At thephins.com, we try to keep a positive attitude. While I am sure some people appreciate your tongue-in-cheek attitude, I can speak for myself many others when I say it is not necessary here.
That's fine, I'm actually not as tongue-in-cheek as you think. And he may be a draft guru, and I was wrong, and would have been happy to admit I was wrong. But the way he responded to me was one that smacked of mimicry especially after I went out of my way to be respectful to LBs Finest in my very first post on the subject of Deandre Hopkins' nickname. Here is my original post: Think, as in I didn't know for sure that his nickname was Newt, but I knew it wasn't Duke. To which I get this in response: How am I supposed to read that last part? It reeks of a "Gotcha!" post. It's crazy to think I have to do a 2-page breakdown to defend myself on something so trivial to begin with. So of course I responded with sarcasm. I expect to be held under the same rules that people who have been here a long time are, and I have a right to defend myself after being called out. There's a way to correct someone (which I never claimed was a fact to begin with) with decency and grace, and there's a way to do it like a smug football elitist. (This is a fan site, right?)
You didn't do anything wrong. You made a harmless joke that someone misunderstood then UCF is basically guru-nosing. You're good.
Clearly a misunderstanding. Boom's a great guy, it seems like invid's a nice guy too. Let's move on and talk draft. It seems like the infatuation period over Stedman, then Cordarrelle is cooling a touch, so maybe we can find our next talented collegiate receiver to get breathless over. Here's a question... who are the fastest receivers in this class (and I don't just mean first and second round guys... I mean even late round guys and UDFAs). I was watching old Alexander Wright stuff on youtube earlier today. Man he could fly.
I have no clue what "guru-nosing" even means lol. I'm sorry if I misinterpreted everything. I just like the positive environment around here, even though I will argue to no extent why Keenan Allen isn't a great prospect and that Hopkins is the best WR prospect in the draft.
To put it to bed, sorry for derailing the topic, and sorry if it came across as a gross overreaction.
That's my take on it too. I thought the post about the Chiropractor being from Greenland was hilarious and obviously meant tongue in cheek. How many people could even tell ya the capital of Greenland off the top of their head? I'd bet no more than 1%. Then as I read further it became apparent some thought it was meant to be serious. Folks need to stop taking themselves so serious all the time, and learn to laugh a little once in a while. We're all JUST fans trying to enjoy ourselves when we read here. Some levity sprinkled in is good, IMO.
I know I am late on the Patterson train, but I really like him. I think he has a high ceiling, probably one of the highest in this years draft. I like DeAndre Hopkins a little bit better, but Patterson has moved into my number 2 WR spot, with Terrance Williams moving down to 3. I am really interested to see what Patterson's 40 yard dash turns out to be. I think he will run a mediocre 40, but have a good 10 yard-split. I also think he will be great in both the 3 cone drill and the 20 yard shuffle. I know Ireland was very, very high on Percy Harvin and Patterson seems to have some of that elusiveness (although I will admit he seems to lack elite speed). I think he could be a really solid addition, especially with Greg Jennings at the #1 spot; we could finally run 4 wide receiver sets (if we resign Hartline too). Why do I get the feeling that if he played for Alabama he would be considered a top 15 pick? Overall, I wouldn't mind if we took him at 12, even though it is a bit high for him.
I also think that he hasn't created as much buzz around the media because he has only been at Tennessee for one year. If he would have returned for his senior season, I could have seen the media picking him up as a legitimate 1st round pick, compared to now where he seems to be all over the board. Not that I mind or care about what the media says, but that could account for why we haven't heard as much about him compared to Keenan Allen, etc.
Fun fact: For this year if you count all of Cordarrelle Patterson and Justin Hunter's offensive touches (NOT counting special teams), Patterson has 1,086 yards on 71 touches (15.3 yard average) and Hunter has 1,083 yards on 73 touches (14.8 yard average). I know those numbers are close, but keep in mind Hunter has been a teammate with Bray for a lot longer period of time compared to Patterson. Plus Patterson was dealing with the talent jump from D-2 to D-1. One scary thing about Patterson is that he only had 1 game where he had over 100 yards receiving; he had 219 receiving yards against Troy. On the other side Hunter had 4 games of 115+ receiving yards. If we want a project and someone that could be better in the long run I say you go with Patterson; if you want someone that is going to help more in year 1 you go with Hunter. Another thing to note is while there isn't any elite WRs in this years draft there is A LOT of solid WR talent that should be available in that 25-60 pick range. If I could plan our draft right now I would trade back, acquire another 2nd round pick, then package that acquired 2nd and a late 3rd to move up to the back of round 1 or the early portion of round 2. The draft like this: 1a.) Assuming around pick 26 after trading back we take the best OL, CB/S, TE, or DE available 1b.) Assuming this is a very late pick in round 1 or an early round 2 pick that we moved up for WR 2.) WR 3.) OL/CB/TE/DE 3.) OL/CB/TE/DE
Much like Cam Newton coming out of Blinn College to Auburn, you could make the argument that despite sending out a warning flare to the NCAA in his first game against David Amerson and the NC State Wolfpack, Patterson was really in a steady pattern of getting better as the season wore on. In other words he was a better receiver by the end of the season than the beginning.
Very much over my head. Suffice to say that you're new here - and welcome - but that you started correcting someone by telling them that they should know something about someone but the info you were giving them was incorrect and then there was the whole read a report or something line. Anyway, as I said, welcome.....good to have you here. And Mr Clean, the fact that you're asking for levity is an irony not lost on me, given that a misplaced apostrophe causes you to enter into some form of apoplexy the like of which is rarely seen. And guru brown nosing???? Puhleese. I've been here long enough and you chumps know me well enough to know a) that doesn't happen and b) that doesn't happen. So wind your collective necks in and lets get on with business. To Greenland! Adieu.
Hey, its guru-nosing, get it right!!!! It does happen, but its not your guys' fault. You are the closest things to celebrities on this site. Again, its not a knock on you guys nor am I implying your asking for it, but some people will kiss up a little bit.
I meant read in the present tense, not past tense, something you can't distinguish through text (which didn't really register with me when I typed it). It was more or less me continuing my smartassery, for that I apologize. I made no mention of reading a report in my first post regarding the subject, and I was merely making a statement that if the Dolphins drafted Hopkins, Dolphin fans were more than likely to start calling him by his nickname. I didn't really know for sure what his nickname was, hence the usage of the word "think", but that's what I remember hearing the commentators calling him out of the 3 or 4 Clemson games I've watched this year. In other words, his nickname isn't a big deal but it would be if he became a Dolphin. I wasn't trying to be arrogant with the "everybody should know" portion of my post, which I went out of my way to try to be abundantly clear, I was more or less trying to be helpful. I was wrong, but by posting it on a public message board I allowed myself to be corrected, which is helpful in the long run. Just didn't appreciate the tone of your post. But anyways, thanks for the welcome and sorry if I lashed back impolitely. I don't know what kind of reputation I've fostered here with barely under 100 posts but I assure everybody I'm quite level-headed. The only people I don't like are ones that parrot this team's negatives incessantly without looking at either the future or current state of our organization or roster. Thought I'd clear some of that up. Carry on with Cordarelle Patterson.
Full disclosure, I want to bear your newborn babes. But as soon as they start to form their own identities in the world and stop becoming merely extensions of myself, then it's off to the orphanage they go.
I just don't get where this guy goes. I get the whole, "If you want a certain player at any position, you pick him." side of the equation, and I know we have to wait til after the draft, but what about right now? It seems like the top rounds of this year's draft will be loaded with guys harboring "potential", is this the year Ireland changes his philosophy in the first round? He did pick Tannehill in the top 10 last year.
I think Patterson will be a 1st round pick and could be the first WR taken in the draft. You are correct in saying he is raw and loaded with potential though. The thing that makes this draft interesting for us is we are in a position where most or even all of the top notch DEs in this class could be taken before we pick, same thing goes for CB. If they are taken, there isn't anyone that would represent great value (in terms of talent to draft position) where we pick other than probably Guards Warmack or Cooper. I see the talent between picks 11-12 and 28-30 all being relatively equal in terms of talent, when compared to previous drafts. I think that fact makes it extremely hard to predict who is drafted where and by what team.
I also think the draft is switching back from a value approach to a get the guy who you want approach. Look at what Seattle has been doing the past couple drafts and having success with it too. Instead of waiting for a guy you want and think you can have later on, you taken him earlier and make sure you get him (Bruce Irvin and James Carpenter where both thought to be overdrafted).
I don't think #42 overall is pushing it at all. You're lucky if he's available at that pick. I was speaking with some more people about him and they all agree. The illusion that he's rated lower than that is just that, an illusion.
Sure you do. People are still acting like there isn't a rookie scale. The draft is different now. The first two rounds, outside of the first 5-10 picks, should be viewed the same value wise. Rounds 3 & 4 should be viewed the same as well. The thing is, once a couple of teams start not worrying about out old value classifications, what I'm saying will happen, will happen. See I feel strongly that Bailey is a can't miss. If I'm a GM and I feel that strongly, i take the player when i can. I mean with the scale if my 12th pick busts its not hurting my team anymore than if my 42nd pick busts, because the contracts aren't bad.
I respectfully disagree b/c there's more to it than money. #42 and #12 shouldn't be viewed as the same value b/c at #42 it's acceptable to draft a WR whom you know going into the draft might be relegated to the slot in the NFL, but doing so at #12 is a misuse of a high pick, as it should be reserved for either a position of greater impact (like pass rusher) or a position involving a full time starter.
Bailey isn't that good. I like him in round 2 for sure but not at 12. Draft me Janikowski Round 1! Can't risk letting him get away.
