lol Well he can do nothing right in yours obviously. Even when nothing's even happened yet.

I just think it's funny when people complain about us being mediocre then ovaryact when we don't overpay to re-sign mediocre players.

If the reports are to be believed, Sean Smith is asking for #2 corner money. That is not forcing him to take anything, that is paying him his value. He will find that deal in the open market and we will have another hole to fill.

I agree. I hope we can resign him for the average of the Sproles and Bradshaw deals. If he signs for even less, Ireland will have really impressed me in that regard.

See....you argued my post without getting all hurt that I was bashing Jeff Ireland. This is why you are a super well respected poster. :-)

I don't trust Jeff Ireland and this team has done nothing to make me feel positive about it. They have beaten me down to the point where I only expect the negative. If I do only expect the negative I will never be disappointed, only pleasantly surprised when something positive does happen.

I WANT Jeff Ireland to succeed. His success means we will have a great offseason and continue to grow and return to relevance. At this point, if Jeff IReland fails that means we will have had a horrible offseason and will continue on this 6-10/7-9 carousel.

I am not saying you're wrong, but I haven't seen these reports. Is there a link? I'm seriously not being douchey.

    Well from Stark's pov:

-below avg deal the last 4 yrs
-last big signing bonus he is likely to receiver

Ireland low balling guys who feel they should get raises for performance will keep guys like Starks and probably Hartline from returning imo.

You're the only one sounding hurt about the situation. Maybe the 2 people who voted positive for Ireland as well.

CK posted something that said the reported 6 yrs/43 mil/20 mil guaranteed contract that Smith is initially said to be seeking, falls in line with what #2 corners get in free agency. That is my recollection anyway.

    I found this:

    Link

But I'm skeptical that info is solid. I just think especially after last season, and the metric tons of bull**** that was spewed, I need a little more to go on then, "rumored" & "word is".

That argument doesn't apply for guys who will still start in this league. Langford is still a good pick despite the fact the team couldn't afford him.

In this case we saved 2 monster contracts for guys who aren't considered top tier guys.

Sean Smiths demands....we can sign Starks and extend Jones for roughly the same price. Jones is the type of player we should be looking to extend. A true playmaker.

I think we should sign a premium FA WR , let Hartline walk , replace him with a WR from round 2 , that WR money goes to the FA , replace with a cheap better imo WR , and prioritize Starks and SS over Hartline . I don't expect him to sign for less than he can get and I don't see the value in those dollars , bump it up a notch and get a more productive , difference maker . Then add one maybe two wideouts in the draft . The depth looks strong and talented in rounds 2 an 3 , use it to your advantage.

Starks has been dominant in stretches and been good always , I chose him over Hartline all day .

I guess we are in just a wait and see mode then, and don't loose any sleep over it. I've found as I've become an older and older bastard that the less I emotionally invest in the state of the Dolphins, the better off I am. I can still enjoy the games and such. Smith may or may not return, but it won't effective my world either way. Good luck to him whether he stays or goes.

    Relax, it's mid January.

At this point it's silly to critique Irish on who he will or won't sign bc no one has a clue.

FYI there are several options at both WR and CB in FA and in the draft who could make more sense than either Hartline or Smith. You can't say the same about Starks at DT so it might make sense to lock him up before he hits the market.

It not as confusing as you make it sound

Re-signing both is fine by me, but I'm guessing both Hartline and Smith will be seeking WAY more than they're worth. We need to exhaust all avenues to get playmakers on this team this off-season. Yeah, we will go from average to below-average at both WR and CB if they walk but it will save us plenty of money to rebuild those positions with greater talent through the draft and free agency.

I'm not going to flip out if either are re-signed though, because I believe they're both nice players, but I'm worried about how much they will demand, and neither posses the kind of fire power we desperately need at those 2 positions.

This is going to be a hell of an off-season.

I'm gonna guess Hartline goes to MIN or CHI.

well i certainly won't be losing any sleep, Hartline is expendable, I'd actually prefer he walk because then Ireland has no choice but to sign AND draft a handful of WRs.

It's a little confusing to me too unless, like Mr. Clean said, they want Odrick at the DE spot. I'm not opposed to re-signing him. I just figure if there is 1 spot on this team that we have young players to step up, it's DT with Odrick and Randall.

Maybe I'm overestimating what it will cost to lock him up. Good player no doubt.

    I'm not stressed about it.

I just want to know if that is what Smith is asking, before I blast the Dolphins for "criminally low balling" him.

That would suck. He's a quality #2. Pair him with Wallace or Jennings and keep Bess in the slot and our WR corps looks a heck of a lot better.

I'm fine with Jennings and drafting a WR in the second to groom as Jennings continues to age. But no sense in getting rid of a guy, in Hartline, that has obvious chemisty with Tanny. We shall see...

Well, that's very true Shou, but then all teams do the same thing. We are at a luxury, where Odrick might fit the niche that Starks has carved here, however, some other team may covet that 'niche' more than we do at this point. I know we all tend to say "we don't want to break the bank" for [fill in the players' name], but it's a reality....

That said, I'm on the bandwagon that wants to see Starks stay here...

DL was a team strength last year, I assume they want to keep it that way. I'm more in favor of re-signing Starks, adding a DE like Tank Carridine or Brandon Graham in the 3rd round, maybe even Sam Montgomery in the first if we can trade down into the mid-late twenties and still get him. That could get us to where our DL is just as good on pass downs as they are on run downs. Considering we've got to go thru Brady to get a division title and the league as a whole is more pass happy than ever, we need as many DL as we can get.

Starks gets a lot of snaps at DT. 7th in the league in snaps among DTs. Far more than Soliai, who was 27th with about 200 less snaps. 826 to 627. For that reason he is justified IMO to expect more per year on average than Soliai. In the nickel rush line, it seems we most often use Starks and Odrick at DT, and Misi or Vernon played RDE. IMO, there is plenty of work to go around for all three.
Odrick played 951 snaps while Vernon played 445. Since Vernon played mostly RDE when he came in, I'd guess about 400 or so of Odrick's snaps came at DT in the nickel package.
