No, it's because he can't play at a high level consistently. He's the kind of guy you allow some other team to pay through the roof for in free agency, especially when you're still in the midst of trying to build a winning team culture centered on professionalism. You can't give big, long-term contracts to the Sean Smiths of the world and expect to come out with a solid culture of professionalism on the other end.

Now Brian Hartline, that's a different story.

So if you let your best starting CB test the market and walk, what is your plan to replace him?

Draft Milliner, resign Sean Smith, Patterson as the nickel, Carroll as the dime and Wilson as the swing corner/safety. Marshall gets moved to safety, Clemons is allowed to walk, Jones at the other safety and find another safety.

Done. Secondary is fixed for a little while.

Meh, I don't know man, I think I would lock myself in a room for a day and really look at what's out there, gonna have to do that anyways considering we don't know what the market has in store for him..

You really like his game huh?

Give me 26 year old Tracy Porter and I'll be ok.

I don't want to let him walk, but there's a number involved.

Sean Smith finished ranked 75th out of 113
Nolan Carrol finished ranked 68th out of 113
Jimmy Wilson fisnished ranked 86th out of a 113

Basically they all sucked and have sucked. I cannot understand anyone that thinks our DBs are worth worrying about if we keep them or send them packing. When you finish ranked 75th overall amongst your peers that total 113 and you are the best DB on the team whats that say ?

People talk about cutting people, LOL, cut our entire friggin secondary because they all sucked BIGTIME. Not one of them could cover a fat lady wading thru a mud puddle with a sandwich in her hand.

Draft a guy in the second round, but getting a stud DE at #12 improves the ENTIRE secondary.

So we have a borderline #1 CB asking for below average money. I don't see the problem here, I'm actually surprised as I thought the figure would be higher. Smith is pretty young, he will just have turned 26 when the season starts and he's got 4 years starting experience. I'm betting there are at least 5 or 6 teams out there that will give him that kind of money with no problems.

Looks like we should prioritise Hartline over Jennings too. Also avoid Mike Wallace at all costs, would be much more cap friendly to sign guys like Marlon Moore, Ted Ginn and Ruvell Martin (4 catchs for 41 yards in 14 games last season).

You are quoting the PFF rankings of Smith, Carroll and Wilson, then later on say our entire secondary "sucked bigtime". That same PFF ranked Miami 13th in pass coverage, which puts them at the top of the middle third and does not equate with sucking.

I've just been thinking about the corner position, and if by letting Smith and Clemons go meant we could devote that cap space as part of a contract to sign Jairus Byrd, I'd do it. Then, going into next season with our corners being Marshall, Patterson, Carroll, and a corner drafted in the first 5 picks would be ok by me.

    These stories will often conflict.

For instance during the season Jeff Darlington reported that the Dolphins only spoke in very general terms with Drew Rosenhaus about an extension for Brian Hartline, and I believe Darlington even noted specifically that no numbers were discussed or anything like that. Now Armando says (and has Brian himself backing him up) that indeed an actual offer was sent to Rosenhaus and Hartline and that Hartline found the offer insulting.

Yeah actually McCann caught my eye a few times.

Has 4.35 speed and a 40 inch vertical. Not surprising that he caught this front office's attention as they really seem to revere those A+ under armor athletes. I don't necessarily mean that in a derogatory manner, because ultimately a lot of great players are A+ under armor athletes as well.

Smith Carroll and Wilson are all listed as CBs. Miam at 13th overall is the entire pass coverage, not just ranking out DBs and IMO, our pass coverage still sucked. Any team with a halfway decent QB cuts us to shreds yearly. Stir it up anyway you wish, Smith Carroll and Wilson completely suck

I agree that our corners are not very good as a whole. I would not say Smith completely sucks though. He a middle of the road cover corner to me. His coverage rating from PFF was positive, barely, as was Carroll's. Wilson had one of the worst ratings in coverage, and negative run defense ratings for all 3 lowered their overall ratings. Carroll and Smith were also negative in penalty ratings.
I guess our being 13th in coverage is more a testament to the safeties, Burnett and Dansby. They all did pretty well in coverage.

Honestly one of my biggest problems with Smith or Coaching is technique. This goes to both coaching staffs that he has had here. Why is it that a guy that is 6'4" is put into zone or off coverages? Seriously this is very annoying. Do you ever see Revis in off coverage? Not too often, no I don't think SMith is Revis but what I think is when Smith is told to lock up a guy like Andrew Johnson or AJ Green and is given the task of pressing the guy at the line he gets into the game more and does a great job. Many times we ask him or he makes the decision to play off which he sucks at. I would rather give him the task each game to shut down a certain player. I feel like he does a much better job a this than playing off or in zone coverages.

For a reasonable price I would re-sign him in a heartbeat. If not I say we trade up and target Dee Milliner in the draft. He is a playmaker at corner that could really benefit us.

I question the usefulness of not resigning our mediocre-to-good players, unless we have players to replace them who are most likely an upgrade. We have enough certifiably bad players on the roster that we really need the mediocre ones. So pay the man, unless he's totally unreasonable in what he wants.

I wonder what the coaching staff and F.O. think about the amount of upside Nolan Carroll still has. Here's a kid that was raw as a CB prospect due to his conversion from WR and a broken leg he suffered while at Maryland. He reportedly ran a sub 4.4 at his pro day, is quite a bright guy and has shown some leadership abilities. Wouldn't shock me if they're a bit more comfortable with him than people might suspect.

Also our DC has some cred behind him for turning other teams castoffs into quality corners....wonder if he couldn't continue to do that here? We can't pay big signing bonuses all over the place...so if we can keep our secondary relatively cheap...it's money that can be used to stock other positions. This team has spent so long dishing out large $$$ to defensive players..it'd be nice to get some more balance with the offensive side.

Not so much corners as safeties. Took Reggie Nelson and Chris Crocker and turned them respectable. Currently doing the same with Reshad Jones and Chris Clemons.

Wait, are we allowed to negotiate, with our own, before official free agency, or do we have to wait?
