    Ireland Retained

    Per Rotoworld:

Associates of Dolphins owner Stephen Ross tell the Miami Herald that Ross has "seen enough improvement" this season to retain GM Jeff Ireland into 2013.

Ireland appeared to be on a short leash as the season opened, but Ross and the Dolphins' upper management are encouraged after a mostly competitive season with rookie Ryan Tannehill showing promise at quarterback. "He sees progress," said a friend of Ross. The Dolphins are 6-8 after Sunday's win over Jacksonville. Miami will close out the season at home versus Buffalo and at New England.

Well, if you like Jeff, encouraging news. If you don't, it might be time to reach for the xanax.

well it looks like we are stuck with the idiot Ireland and we can bet the national debt that he will screw up this next draft and we will likely see another 7-9 season but that doesnt mean i cant change my mind but it looks again like the media is trying to run this orginazation if they wantus to keep ireland they will lobby for him .

i was hoping we would get better talent but i just dont see how we will with the gm staying put.

I don't really mind. His job is tied to Philbin and Tannehill, I guess. So he will probably be given the 3 year window like most new GMs.

Yeah, I have no opinion either way too, but I find it hilarious that these clowns are going to pay hundreds for a banner or whatever it is they want for the last home game of the season while the team is still alive for the playoffs.

I don't like Ireland...but not sure if I want someone else in charge of the team right now. We are in a spot here that this team could get real competitive real quick with a few good men next season. A cb, a safety, and new wrs could change everything.

I don't trust Ireland to find them, but you have to believe they are our priority

Ireland has positioned himself well to make a splash in free agency and the draft. This year's draft and the hiring of Philbin should be considered hugely successful.

I'll stay with Ireland. Rather than risk another Mueller or Spielman.

But what the hell do I know. I said he was in a death spiral after he traded Vontae.

How's that for riding the fence?

I didnt expect him to be let go after this season. I think that, for Ireland, 2013 is do or die. I think that Philbin might survive a bad (5-11ish) year though.

I just don't see how the guy has a job. After going 11-5, as holding the title of GM, he's been 7-9, 7-9, 6-10, and now at best 8-8. If they finish 7-9, which is projected, that's the same mediocrity. The problem is he hasn't improved any issue since he's been here. Same ole thing - strong run defense, mediocre back end - worse since using the players he drafted, poor passing offense, and strong/above average run offense. No points, gve up few points.

It amazes me. In my job, or any other GM has the poor track record he does he's gone. Gene Smith will be out in Jax. Can't think of any others.

Does this really surprise anyone ?? Didn't Ross make it abundantly clear that he was going to stick with Ireland when he kept him on and canned the rest of the regime ?? I don't see why guys are so surprised... I also don't think he needs to be canned at this point, with only one season with Philbin, but either way, Ross made this call last offseason...

How about AJ Smith ? Tannenbaum in NY?? There are probably going to be a few GMs hit the market this year, but those guys have all with the current regimes in place except Smith who picked the wrong QB and it may not be so cut and dried for him anyway with the injuries they've had this year...

EDIT: Pioli in Kc is another treading lightly. We've already seen a guy go in Cleveland as well... And Reid is as good as gone...(coach and gm)

Intense hatred for a guy they don't even know and intense hatred based on pure speculation. Sad really. Everything discussed in here is based on speculation and from an outsiders point of view. From the outside looking in. These "people" have little to no idea at the talent we have or do not have and ignore the coaches all together to fit their agenda. Instead of trying to under stand what Ireland is trying to do and why, it is easier to ***** and complain about it. Most of the time they are forming opinions and they do not understand what is going on. There are professionals and then there are novices. I need not say who is what that is obvious. It is ignorant to assume information, assuming Hartline has not been replaced Just because "fill in whatever here" may not be the whole case. We do not know all the circumstances; contract, injury reports on other players, true cap numbers, inside word on player, etc. That seems to be the way around here and if you try to discuss something other then the topic in hand it always ends up back at it's Irelands fault and just about every topic in here is derailed as a result. That seems to be the way.

Now we are going to see people throwing around names of past GM's. People they have no idea about except for they read someone's opinion in the media and now all of a sudden to look "football smart" he should be our new GM. Problem with that theory is we currently retain one of the best GM's in the league, one of the best coaches and some of the better talent in a lot of areas. There is still work to be done and I am confident Ireland will get it done. Get it done when the conditions are right. There is a reason Marshall was jettisoned and Vonte was traded, that sh1t around here don't fly. As we get respect around the league we will lure good talent. It takes time.

I think he was set to be retained all along, and given the recent fan uproar about firing him, I think they simply picked the best time during the remaining part of the season to "leak" this information, after a blowout win at home against Chad Henne, with the next two games being more difficult to win.

In other words, "he's staying, enjoy your win, and shut up now."

I've reached a comfortably numb state in my career as a Miami Dolphins fan. I still watch the games, but am not very emotionally invested in the outcome. If Jeffrey is retained, I expect that to continue. I know some probably expect me to want to jump off a bridge if Ireland is retained, but just like the many losses and continued display of mediocrity, I'm not going to let it get me down.

I'm worried more about his supporters who are going to really have to work hard to continue excusing the performance of this man after he completely botches another free agency (and he will, mark my words) and parades in another underwhelming and mediocre draft class.

So, we get a very nice and impressive win yesterday, our rookie QB looked great... and one of the top threads is one pissing and moaning about our GM?

In a day that didnt have any negatives (besides a botch fake FG, lol)... why is this topic one of the top ones?

I didn't see the second half yesterday as I had my grandmother's 84th birthday dinner down south, but I watched the first half and that was one of the most awful halves of football I've seen. It was like both teams trying to figure out which was worse. They throw a touchdown on us to go up 10-3 but their tackle-playing-tight-end forgets to report eligible to the referees before the play, and it gets called back. I'm pretty sure there is no situation in football that exemplifies the word "better lucky than good" quite as aptly.

Understandably with us outscoring the Jags 14-0 in the second half, it was probably a better half of football, at least for the Dolphins. But the first half wasn't "winning ugly". It was "ugly...and who cares who is winning".

How has this been an underwhelming and mediocre draft class? We've gotten plenty of contributions from our rookies, including what looks to be like the QB of the future. A future QB, a starting Tackle, and some other contributing players is a good rookie class. What would this draft class have to look like to get a "good" mark from you? Pro Bowlers? Every player picked starting and contributing?

You want to call him a future QB, I call him a question mark. Andy Dalton has 12 TDs in his last 6 games. Tannehill has 10 in 14 games. The TD/INT ratio is awful. I'm not disparaging him, but I'm not going to crown someone whose production compared even to the other rookie QBs is alarmingly low as a franchise QB. If we see marked improvement next year and a positive TD/INT ratio, then I'll be ready to take that step. Not anytime sooner.

As for the rest, mediocre draft class as of right now I think it a pretty fitting description.

Considering our 3rd rounder can't even get active, our 4th round RB is in an out of the active roster, our 5th rounder is constantly inactive and a team with a thin WR core already cut it's 6th rounder and the 7th rounder is only now getting playing time, I'd say the overall class is very mediocre. Even MArtin is really only starting out of necessity and hasn't been that rgeat at either RT or LT this year.

Obviously, if Tanny becomes a franchise, pro bowl caliber QB then that makes the class, but until that happens it doesn't look great.

I think you have to be honest with yourself about the Draft class. I liked it. I gave it an A-/B+. I don't have motivation to disparage players I liked. But Ryan Tannehill is currently looking like the 4th best QB in the class even though we drafted him as the 3rd. The 5th and 6th best QBs in the class don't currently look that far behind him. And hell for that matter look what Kirk Cousins did yesterday as the 7th best QB in the class. Let's just be honest about what we really know and don't know about this class and how it's really looking thus far.

After that you talk about the Dolphins getting a "starting tackle" as if the guy has played well this year. He hasn't. In my opinion, he's shown that he is NOT a starter. Not this year. In the future? Who can say. But he's arguably been worse than Marc Colombo, yet gets a pass because he's a rookie 2nd round pick. I liked him as much as the next guy as a "value" pick in the 2nd round. Doesn't mean he's playing well.

And Olivier Vernon is...what, exactly? A special teams ace that stops the run pretty well as a multiple player from end/linebacker. Will he always be that? We don't know. Nobody does. I'm just identifying what he currently is.

Michael Egnew...I needn't say anything there. Lamar Miller has yet to really show anything of substance. Same with Rishard Matthews and Kheeston Randall. B.J. Cunningham and Josh Kaddu were cut loose.

I don't see how that draft class deserves better than "mediocre" billing at THIS current stage. You can certainly make the case that it's too early to judge, and I'd agree with you. But if someone is saying that it currently looks on the early returns like a mediocre class, there's no disagreement. They're getting mediocre work out of their draft class at this early stage.

BINGO! To say this year's draft class has been anything better than average is homeristic at best. Of course we all know you need a few years to fully analyze a draft, but after nearly an entire year, this class is not anything special. Especially outside of the first two picks, which is where a truly great GM makes an impact. Anybody can draft a center 10 spots too early and have him pan out.

Because whether we won or lost, or whether you dislike the guy or not, or whether you thought it was a fait accompli anyway, it's the closest we've come to actual confirmation that he will be retained, which I thought made it newsworthy to begin with.

If you don't care for the arguments within, skip the thread. There's really nothing that hasn't been argued before.

I am not shocked, you dont can a guy when scouting season kicks into high gear.
Its never happened and never will.

I just hope he gets the pieces that we need.
Although I highly doubt it, who needs a badass alpha WR when we can have another ****ty TE? or MOAR GUARDZ.
