No, Koa Misi. We ahd traded the 2nd rounder for Marshall and the tarde down was specifically made to recoup that pick
Well, that's your opinion. You can sit on your high horse and call me a ****ty fan all you want. The truth is actually quite the opposite. I care so much about this football team that it was having a very negative impact on my life. Ruining my days / weeks / entire football season. So go ahead and call me a ****ty fan because I care less. The fact of the matter is it was necessary for my personal sanity. I have no control over how this team performs on Sundays. I have no control on whether or not Steve Ross fires or doesn't fire Jeff Ireland, who I believe will cause mediocrity to permeate this team as long as he is in control of football operations. So, though I am still a fan and will always be a fan of this team, I had to learn to start caring less at the outcomes and goings ons of this team. And FWIW, year after year of mediocrity and up and down seasons are harder for me to handle than the terrible seasons. At least the terrible seasons make the draft enjoyable.
This is nonsense. Any "reasonable fan" should understand the inherent reality of sports entails the expectation of mediocrity.
There are, unfortunately, quite a few fans like that on this board. People who proudly put posters on ignore because they have the audacity to dislike Jeff Ireland.
Questioning fan loyalty for liking Jeff Ireland? I've never seen that argument made here. Not saying it hasn't happened. Maybe I've just missed it. I've told people that I respect the fact that they stand by Jeff Ireland, though I vehemently disagree.
Disagree, this year the failure to secure someone to replace both Davis & Marshall have undermined this team to a degree it cost them a playoff spot. It also stunted the growth of the new QB to the point of not being able to fully assess his true worth. Failing to get a TE to get involved in a Philbin offense is a critical dereliction of duty. Will Ross see this ? I think unlikely because he comes off as completely clueless.
Being a fan isn't about being reasonable. It's short for "fanatic" after all. Sports would be pretty boring if everybody just accepted mediocrity. This board wouldn't exist. Sports in general would be a lot less fun.
I agree. "Better" is the wrong term. I don't paint my face, dress up, or jump aroumd like a lunatic when I go to the games but there are people that do. They are just more fanatical than me about expressing their fandom. Not better or worse.
What I'm more curious about is how four straight losing seasons becomes "mediocrity". Which goes back to the point I made before about how fans keep blurring the lines between average and below average.
Thats all well and fine, fans can expect whatever they choose. But again, the reality of sports entails that mediocrity is the norm. And really if you are a South Florida fan, you probably have things better off than most sports towns.
Well Misi has never lived up to greatness either. I guess he is a serviceable LB, but not one that would start on more than half of the other teams I guess. Who was taken in our slot in the 1st we gave up ?
The Dolphins have been very mediocre for a long time. It's not a recent occurence. And again, fandom isn't about being reasonable. Some poeple take it way too seriously, but caring at all about the outcome of a sporting event is pretty stupid in the grand scheme of things.
Ryan Matthews. JPP, earl thomas, Demayrius Thomas and Dez Bryant among the notables taken between 12 and 28 (where we selected Odrick)
Ryan Mathews, who has been a solid bunch of meh. JPP and Earl Thomas, however, have been pretty damned good, and they're the ones we would have realistically chosen had Ireland not listened to KB's advice on either of those players.
I have seen a few posters who call people who liking Jeff Ireland, "closet Jet fans" or something like that.
Since 2008, there are 18 teams with more wins than Miami. Give them one more win over that span, and there are 16 teams with more wins. Thats pretty much middle of the pack.
It's really sad to see that kind of stat. 18 teams with more wins.....I never thought we sink this low. And have fans that think its okay too.....
I think 5 or 6 wins and Ireland is on the hot seat with Ross having his finger on the button... 7 wins or more and he could be safe especially if we finish 2nd in the division. I'm not saying that is acceptable by any measure but it's higher than the pundits predicted before the season started. Most had us 3rd or last in the division. And in Ross' mind (that's all that matters) he could see it as progress in the right direction.
I'm sure the overwhelming majority of people would say we are wasting our time in general. Having said that, keep posting guys. As often as possible. Great for ratings.
But some seem to always remain good, like Pittsburgh, which since the 1970's have had few down years. And we had always been pretty good for 3 decades, maybe not championship material, but not embarrassingly bad (as in 2007) or really bad beginning of last year. You come to expect it. I thought we'd have some down years but after 2007, I expected to be back on top or at least fighting for a playoff spot by now. And now it looks like we are in the throes of yet another rebuild which could take until 2014 or 2015 to be good enough to compete. That's nearly 10 years to find that magic again, and it makes you jealous when you see some other teams make that transition in less than 4 or 5 years. It's just disheartening.
Earl Thomas really hasn't been special since his rookie year. Reshad Jones has been much better this year. More INTs, more passes defensed, more tackles, more stops, more sacks, more QB hits, more QB hurries, more forced fumbles, lower completion percentage allowed, etc. PFF gives Jones a 22.1 rating; they give Earl Thomas a -1.4. And Ireland got Jones in the 5th round of the same draft you are saying he should have taken Thomas in the first. I was all about Thomas that year and wanted him in the first too, but the truth is that Jones is playing much better. And around here, Brandon Graham and Jerry Hughes were the popular pass rusher picks that year, not JPP, and Graham and Hughes have been far from great.
It's interesting that you chose 2008 as your start year instead of 2009 or 2007. Or 2004. You realize we're not talking about Jeff Ireland, right? We're talking about your (kind of rude, just being honest) response to what was really a very reasonable post by jw explaining the problems that have led to poor attendance. We're talking about your declaration that all Miami fans that show their displeasure by not spending money on the Dolphins are stupid because they should expect this "mediocrity". This is about the status of Miami's fans, their mindsets, their potential disillusionment with the team, and their attendance to games. Though unhappiness with Jeff Ireland is certainly ONE issue in the minds of the fans that prevent them from spending significant dollars on the games, I think it goes without saying that from the fan's point of view that mindset is affected by a lot more than just Jeff Ireland...namely, the fact that the team loses so many games. So, I'm not sure why you'd want to start your timeline at 2008, other than just pure convenience to your argument. If you were to calculate the team's win percentage from each of the last 10 years to present, this is what they would be: 2012 to Present: 0.417 2011 to Present: 0.393 2010 to Present: 0.409 2009 to Present: 0.417 2008 to Present: 0.468 2007 to Present: 0.398 2006 to Present: 0.394 2005 to Present: 0.416 2004 to Present: 0.397 2003 to Present: 0.420 I find it interesting that out of alllll these potential time periods you could have cited, you cited the one time period in which the win percentage is far higher than any of the other time periods. I'm sure that's just a coincidence though.
Unfortunately I do too. If we manage to beat the Bills and Jags, Ireland most definitely will be here and there shouldn't even be much discussion about it. I won't like it but it will be what it will be.
To be fair, that was the start of the Parcells/Ireland era, so it's a good logical starting point. Sadly, it includes the Pennington falling from the sky into our laps season, so it skews our record mightily.
Yes I agree. The Dolphins are beyond the window where 7-9 might have still gotten Ireland fired. In order for that to happen the Dolphins would haven had to lose like 6 straight games at the end of the season due to poor depth, or something along those lines. But the Dolphins have lost 4 of their last 5 games and SEEM like they'll be losing 5 of their last 6 games (haven't seen many folks giving the Dolphins a chance against the 49ers). I think Jeff Ireland's fate is really resting on the outcome of the Jaguars game to be honest. I'm not saying this is rational, but if Jeff Ireland's team gets beaten by Chad Henne to cap off a losing streak where the team has lost 6 of their last 7 games, I just think privately and publicly there will be a lot of minds changing because it will represent such a metaphorically poignant loss.
But how is the Parcells/Ireland era relevant to a discussion about why Miami Dolphins FANS are not spending money on games? Did those fans only start being fans when Parcells and Ireland arrived? That's the point I'm making here. It would be like talking about the trend of voter opinions on global warming, and then only tracking global temperatures from 2008 to Present because that's when Obama was elected.
Decent cap space to make a splash. A high first, second and third round pick. Extra 2nd and third round pick. Might be a fun year for a new GM.
Then the next part of the equation doesn't necessarily equal an offseason where we don't make a splash in free agency or via trade. There will be differences of opinion in the definition of what such an event is but I'd say the acquisition of Brandon Marshall and Karlos Dansby in the offseason of 2010 qualified. Dansby signed the richest contract for an inside linebacker in NFL history at the time and Marshall's contract was assuredly top 5. Sure, 2010 had no salary cap that year but it was widely believed it would come back in some form so they had to spend money with the future in mind.
So, you think Ross is going to fall again for the : "Those bad picks? Other guy. Good picks? Me!!!" argument?
