He also took over a 1-7 team to manage that 6-6, let's add some perspective to that little discussion

How long do you think it takes to install a new system under a new HC, one that's entirely different than the previous one, gain the right personnel for it, and have those players develop (especially the QB) to where it can be consistently successful? I'd say about 3-4 years. If Parcells didn't have us forked down the wrong path system-wise to where we wouldn't have to undo so many mistakes, then I'd say 2 years should be enough.

Going from a Henning-style offense (and the personnel brought in for it) to a Philbin WCO, and from a 3-4 to a 4-3, from a team that seemed to be poorly coached and ill-prepared for developing players for 3 years, with a rookie QB starting, and with one year spent under a lame duck coach, I certainly wouldn't place unfair expectations on us becoming a playoff team overnight..... and it's not fair to compare our transition to Atlanta's of 2008. I'd expect there to be a transition, with us showing glimpses of promise in year one of Philbin (which we have) and then a big jump in year 2. That's entirely fair and reasonable. If we post another 6-10 or 7-9 record, I'd say that's a sign of development considering all the changes and that we essentially had to take a step backward in order to put us on the right track.

Maybe. That's more on topic than your feelings about the Dolphins.

I never said you were "too emotionally caught up"... you said you weren't emotionally invested in the Dolphins anymore... I believe you said since 2009. We both know that is complete bull ****. All of us are emotionally vested in this team otherwise we wouldn't be here spending the time that we do, painstaking, exhaustive hours, posting and debating topics just like the ones in this thread. Many of your posts are amazing and loaded with informative information that I'm sure the vast majority of us enjoy reading. So don't take this the wrong way. It's not a negative to say you're still a fan. I was just merely quoting one simple post.

Matt Moore entered the second quarter of game 4, started by Henne. He then lost his first 3 starts.

He was just as responsible for the 0-7 start as was Henne.

yeah, Parcells' terrible head coach should get a free pass for that 0-7 start [and his inability to develop players], especially after the team's 6-3 finish and playing at a playoff level those final 9 games.

Fine, he still lead us to a .500 record and deserves credit for so doing.

Pulled out the Jest game this years as well.

Wouldn't that make him 7-6 the last two years?

TBH, I'm not as invested in this team as I once was just the losing yr after yr just kills it for me

That and I have so many things occupying my time I just cannot really put the effort in that I once did.

    You actually didn't.

Tell me so we have it in black and white how long you personally give the man in charge to have Miami make the playoffs?

I don't see anywhere where you said by year 2012 ...or 2013 ... or 2014 , no " If Parcells didn't " no " about " just a simple date . You never provided that, as a proponent of Ireland do you have a date where not making the playoffs you ulitmately would hold him accountable ? or would circumstances make that date fluid?

Yes, I did. I said 3-4 years. Next year marks year 3. Do you need help with the math since anything above 1 & 2 seem to be difficult?

You asked "how long" not "what year". Maybe you should be more specific about your questions. :wink2:
Not only did I address the how long but I also addressed the why.

People don't seem to understand that 2011 was essentially a dead year under lame duck coach Sparano b/c it's utterly stupid for a GM to spend big resources on players whom might not be a proper fit for a new HC's system.

I'm a fan by action. I'm sorry if you doubt that I'm not emotionally caught invested in the Dolphins anymore, there certainly have been moments for sure but they are very few, very far between. I spend a lot of time here and do a lot of research. I ave my reasons for that. But they might not be what you imagine them to be.

But it's too late by then, and if he stays and has control of this off-season he will then have to be kept at least until 2016 to gauge how it all worked out.

I don't know if the Dolphins will have any fans by the time that all plays out.

According to your argument, why would that be any different than a new GM taking over whom we'd essentially have to wait till 2016 to gauge how his decisions work out as well? It's no different.

Thankfully, there are enough pieces in place, enough FA money and high draft picks, and good enough coaching to see a difference in 2013 if Ireland makes the right moves.

    Awesome analogy bro. Big props.

Myself I also fell asleep during the Tennessee game and lost almost a whole qtr. That is the 1st time since 1966 that I fell asleep during a Dolphin game. But it does get harder and harder to maintain ones belief that "next year" will actually come, and that we aren't actually in a huge game of Ground Hog Day.

Let's see what you answered , and I don't know how to quote so here it is :

How long do you think it takes to install a new system under a new HC, one that's entirely different than the previous one, gain the right personnel for it, and have those players develop (especially the QB) to where it can be consistently successful? I'd say about 3-4 years. If Parcells didn't have us forked down the wrong path system-wise to where we wouldn't have to undo so many mistakes, then I'd say 2 years should be enough.

Unless I missed it and I may have , I don't see where you answered the question "So then how long does the man ultimately in charge get from you to have his team make the playoffs?" You never mentioned playoffs, just trying to get you to pinpoint when you will hold Ireland responsible to make the playoffs.

So by skirting the question can I then take it you are saying Ireland has to make the playoffs next year? Or is it in 2 years? ( nice to always not be accountable next season isn't it ? ) Or if he doesn't you will say I said "consistently successful" I never actually said playoffs ... and I consider 9 wins successful?

You weren't either an english major nor a math one , simple question which you have not answered. Let me rephrase it so you have no wiggle room , if his team fails to make the playoffs next year do you hold Ireland responsible and thus end his mediocre tenure with this team? You would be in favour of firing him if we do not make the playoffs? Or is that once again some fluid line that moves because ...you pick your excuse?

IMO, their rationale behind it was they didn't know what they really had yet with Soliai. Maybe they should have, but they didn't.
He was considered a backup at that point. Parcells was reportedly very upset when the Cards took Dan Williams. The plan was to draft him for NT. After that, they took Odrick and claimed the plan was to move Starks to NT all along. IMO, that was BS put out to cover their asses for trading down too far to get the guy they targeted. Then the first game Odrick is lost for the season, and they are forced to move Starks back to DE and start Soliai at NT, and he had a great season.

see bold print. It's the same ****ing answer. 3-4 years. Year 3 being next year.

If you're uncertain what numerically follows 2012 then I really can't help you.... and similarly, if your ADHD prevents you from digesting more than 1 paragraph at a time, I can't help you with that either. Borrow some of Aqib Talib's Adderal; I'm sure he doesn't need it anymore.

Well, objectively, Ireland's time does look a lot like the GM for the Texans time.

We've added a Qb, added 2 rb's, high picks on the OL

Decent Wr's Hartline is comparable to Walters

We have no comprable talent as their Te and Andre Johnson, their Lb corps is younger and more dynamic, consider they lost Williams and Demeco Ryans and have not missed a beat, if we lost Wake and Dansby we'd be screwed this year.

INOW, the Texans used their 7-9 seasons far more productively than Ireland has used his, that is undeniable.

Reality is though, they were in position to add Andre Johnson, but Owen Daniels was relatively cheaply acquired.

Rick Smith has done a better job than Ireland over the last 3 seasons with similar draft position.

INOW, if Ireland's tenure rests on Pouncey, uhm, that about sums it up.

I really don't think anyone wonders why attendance is so low. I think any reasonable fan of South Florida sports realizes that the fans down here will not support a losing franchise. It appears that the Dolphins are about to have their 4th straight season of sub 500 football. That is why the stands are filled with empty seats on Sundays and that is what will continue to happen until this franchise starts winning consistently again.

The majority of Dolphin fans don't have any faith in Ireland as the person who can provide this team with the talent it needs to once again be a consistent winner. It is now up to Ross to make the chances necessary to once again give these fans the hope that this team can finally get headed in the right direction. He can start by getting rid of Ireland and hiring a new GM.

Let's just say I haven't actually been excited by or saddened by the outcome of a Miami Dolphins game (aside from the few I attend personally) in some time. Games I attend, it's different. If I attend a Bucs game I cheer for the Bucs and feel happy if they win. It's the same thing. Like I said though, I have moments where I do get emotionally caught up in what the Dolphins are doing. Not very often, and mostly during the off season, but they're there. At some point I just had a realization that my loving the NFL, loving to talk about NFL football, evaluate players, argue, everything like that...doesn't mean I have to derive happiness or sadness from whether a football team wins or loses. I think in actuality, a lot of "diehard" fans end up having that realization. I'm not unique.

Problem being, mediocrity also means no leg up in terms of draft position, just good enough to pick mid rd 1, away from elite talent, dammed if you do, dammed if you don't.

No one is arguing mediocrity is good, or something to strive for, or even really acceptable.

You're still a ****ty fan if you decide you don't care or can't be bothered because the team is just "eh". I can only imagine what would happen if the team were truly, actually bad.

There is something to be said for putting your money where your mouth is, but obviously there are many great fans who cannot go to the games for whatever reason.

The biggest issue I have with the "better fan"a rgument is that the people making think any criticism of the team makes you a bad fan. That is just nonsense

I know I just don't get it when you see people say we're going to make this big splash in free agency. If they resign Long, and several others, we actually may be so hamstrung as to not even do anything in free agency. That will mean hoping that Ireland goes after a WR in the 1st or 2nd, and maybe both rounds.
