Basically I want to start at the very beginning of a series and work my way through it. Marvel has master collections of their comics which makes this possible to do. Only problem? I'm having a hard time selecting one to start with. The four I'd be most interested in (in no order). Iron Man: One of my favorite heroes. However on the negative side his enemies are generally kind of lame and I've heard his original character was very different in personality from the more recent portrayals. Spider Man: I've been really into lately watching all the old cartoons from when I was a kid. On the plus side his enemies are interesting for the most part which is a big thing to me. Thor: Probably the least interesting character to me, however his enemies and world are probably the most interesting. Avengers: On the plus side you get a plethora of characters and storylines. On the negative side I've heard the story doesn't really hit it's stride for quite a while. Are there any other geeks here who could lend an opinion? Or anyone who read these comics as kids and had a favorite?
I'd go thor. Think he has the most interesting story line. fyi you can probably find the comics online for ...............
I know...honestly I get everything ...... except books. I have a thing for actually collecting books.
If you are going for enemies Spider-Man is not the one. The most interesting part of Spider-Man's early years is Spider-Man. The villains more more of a monster of the week.
I never read thor. I do think early Spider-Man is really fun to read. Peter Parker is a really interesting character.
I don't know why you're limiting yourself to these 4 or 5. And why only Marvel? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
1) Because they are the five characters that interest me most story wise. Well Avengers isn't a character but you get what I mean. Not a fan of X-Mex/FF really so it excludes that. 2) Why Marvel? Because in my opinion DC is absolutely terrible and I think Marvel characters are most interesting? Of course there are other comic books as well (I own a few) but I want something classic.
DC is terrible minus Batman. He is a great character. If it were me I'd pick X-Men out of all the Marvel series. Out of the ones you listed it would be Spider-Man or Avengers.
Early X-Men are not very good. I do like how they show improvement of certain characters, however you can see why the X-Men were not popular when they started.
Iron Man doesn't get good until he becomes an alcoholic and then it's one of the best Marvel arcs ever.
You're right but it is the best Marvel comic in the mid to late 70's all the way to the ealry 80's. Story after great story.
Watchmen is very, very hyped, but it does warrant the praise. Anything that gets better (and reveals more depth) with each re-reading is pretty damn good, IMO. 100 Bullets is good stuff as well.
Ok, I'm going to get blasted for this and I know you said you don't like DC, but hear me out....Batman Beyond. It is the exact halfway point between Batman & Spiderman. It takes much of what's great about both characters and blends them together. Plus, there's enough familiarity and edge to make for an interesting read.
I liked the early Fantastic Four. Nice story arcs as each character evolved into their abilities and Doc Doom is a great nemesis. To go outside the box I would recommend Judge Dredd of 2000 AD. The recent movie was very close to the comics in tone. Some very snappy single episode adventures along with longer adventures.
If I was going to read a DC comic (and Im not AGAINST it, I just think a lot of their main characters are boring. If it was something a bit more obscure I'd consider) it would probably be Batman of some sort. So I'll definitely consider this option.
I need to pick up all the IKS series. I have and finished SSTB so long ago but had some stuff going on and never kept up with the IKS chapter/series/portion. SO that's already there on my list
Your local comic book shop should have tons of graphic novels in stock and if they dont have the one you want im sure they can order it. If you don't like going out there is always Amazon or illegal downloading.
