We are winning with zero talent and depth, oh wait we do have depth in our Defense, last I checked our back up QB is pretty damn good. We have depth at RB, the only big weakness we really have is probably O-Line and WR, which with the amount of draft picks we have should hopefully be fixed. As for cap, I think we are in a great space next year for it.

Sober up next time before you post :)

This thread will take another turn this week! LOL.

The obvious talent holes the team had going into the season have been in the spotlight today to a ridiculous degree.

That said were still in the game.

I'm telling you it's coaching making the biggest difference this year and then emergence of a couple young players showing promise.
The biggest talent holes have not at all disappeared.

This. I said several times in the Ireland threads that this secondary would be exposed against good QBs. I'm sorry to be right.

people can cry about db depth and there right but the Brandon Marshall trade made us non contenders and ruined any chance of something special this year Imo

    Depth?

We don't have the luxury of talking about depth in the defensive backfield.
It's about the talent of our starters first and foremost.

We all knew this going into the season though.
Biggest thing is to realize this team is moving in the right direction but it certainly isn't there yet.

That's why there was no reason to bump this thread for gloating after the team won it's 4th game.

Can't play the Jets, Rams, and Raiders every week. A team with serious players on O, dressed us down big time today. A team that's quite frankly not that good, and will maybe win 3 games on the road this year.

i wouldn't mind losing to the Bears 23-20. That's not what happened today. The one thing we got going is having a ridiculously easy schedule much of the way. Then again, we lost to 3 teams that aren't that good. We're right in the middle of the slop, like yousch.

losing brandon marshall wouldn't hurt so much if we had adequately replaced him...or even tried to adequately replace him. instead we signed naanee, which was a complete bust, and drafted a couple guys in the 6th and 7th rounds...one can't see the field, the other couldn't even make the team. meanwhile the guy who shined at Florida International and torched us all day was sitting there staring us in the face in the 3rd round, probably praying we'd take him....and instead, we took a complete non factor in Egnew.

it's no coincidence that on one end our passing game is limited and on the other end we can't defend a good passing game, we traded away our best playmakers on both sides of the ball and replaced them with nobodies.

we wouldn't have needed to trade up for Hilton. he was there for the taking in the 3rd round. twice.

WR skyrocketed up our list of needs the moment we traded away Marshall and didn't sign any legit WRs in free agency. and when we waited until the 6th round to take one, I was livid...and rightfully so, now we have to deal with the limitations that hinder your offense when you fail miserably at providing playmakers on the outside for your young franchise QB.

blah blah blah blah blah blah blah. Like I said, blah blah blah. Please quit your little hindsight pitchfork parade. I already asked you once to show me a post where you talked up Hilton as a high 3rd rounder despite nearly the ENTIRE NFL passing on him in the 3rd round. For the 2nd part, how long will it take you to realize that drafting BPA is more important than drafting for need? Please... quite whining. Please. It's so annoying.

Honestly, it is far too soon to say who was the best player Miami could have taken at that pick. Check back sometime around the middle of 2013 and let us see how Egnew is doing. It is not unusual for a rookie to take some time to develop. Not all are immediate impact players. Other TEs like Graham and Finley weren't much as rookies either, and neither one had a player as good as Fasano ahead of them.

It's ok you can keep thinking were better off without Brandon Marshall. The more his numbers pile up because he has a real qb throwing him the ball and not Moore or Henne you can keep telling yourself Hartline is better.

I think almost everyone has said that it's no secret but we have been surprised how they have been better than expected. Smith fell off hard this week though. Is Marshall going to play again this year? I wish Vonte would have been dedicated to football but he failed glad we have value from it and it won't be a complete loss but it won't help until next season now.

Or are you just taking a jab at Ireland?

It's not really about Ireland at this point. The secondary is what it is. You think Smith fell off, but it's more to do with the quality of the QB throwing passes against him. Miami's defense is always going to perform well against teams whose strength is running the ball. But that skillset of stopping the run is useless against teams with very good / elite QBs. You saw it yesterday. Didn't matter if it was 3rd and 6 or 3rd and 15. Luck made it look waaaaaay too easy.

Whether it's Ireland or another GM calling the shots, the secondary needs better players. The safeties are better than I thought they would be, but they'll still be exposed by the better QBs in the league. I'm afraid to see what Tom Brady will do to this secondary if it doesn't get better.

It's reassuring to know we have a competent coaching staff to look at the tape and hopefully improve.

It appears that the weakness of the team (which some of the posters suspected) had been exposed for what it is - what Grandpa used to call 'middlin' bunch of guys who know how the position should be played, but really aren't very good at it. They seem to be one, two, or three steps out of position, or when they get in position, they don't make the play they need to make. I cannot remember how many times I saw a receiver catching the ball with no defenders closer than five yards (and that would be a generous guess - it seemed more like ten, but I was confounded that there was even that much room.) Too many times as well, the commentators made the observation that the team's defenders could not seem to locate the ball - which brings two things to mind.

Is there something wrong with the style of defense they are playing that they cannot locate the ball; or

(and this is strictly supposition) is there an inherent advantage to players who practice in that stadium with the roof closed in locating the ball as opposed to those players who come in without much practice and then try to locate the ball against that darker and very intricately built background. I admit, that is just a SWAG, because I have a hard time believing that the defensive backfield collectively resemble Mr. Magoo more than Surtain or Madison.

It is easier to believe in this team's seemingly interminable inability to put together a playoff caliber secondary given the record of history and the current antipathy toward any player who ever was more than a passing thought by the current GM. But watching yesterday's game against an admittedly very good young quarterback (how some of those throws got out of there I cannot fathom - Geez, on was on his knees almost!) I would hope that no one concerned with the secondary, player or coach, would be by any means confident of his continued employment past Jan. 2, 2013 (I feel somewhat soft-hearted, or -headed - give them at least the holidays.) If the secondary doesn't improves substantially by then - I'd be more than happy to hear the call for "Sweepers! Sweepers! Man your brooms. Give the D backfield a clean sweepdown, fore and aft." That doesn't mean you throw everything out... just the trash.

I don't know how you can coach over Odrick at DE. The defense has been doing well with scheme so far, but there's still a missing pass rusher (could you imagine a Chandler Jones paired with Wake?).

Simply, you're amusingly annoying, and the sadistic side of me would enjoy watching you endure a sudden bout of salmonella, preferably onsetting during one of your Ireland rants. Seeing you post Ireland gibberish doesn't rile me up. Quite the contrary as it makes me smile knowing he has you riled up.

No way, Aqua. Hilton is a franchise receiver, and we'd presently be undefeated if we drafted him instead of Egnew. Don't you know how dumb it is to draft a TE the year before our own starting TE is set for free agency especially when Clay can obviously handle the entire load himself should we not be able to re-sign Fasano? :shifty:

Through the first half of the season, the 3rd round DE we drafted over a WR is having a better year than 1st rounders Shea McClellan, Quinton Coples, Whitney Mercilus, and Melvin Ingram. Just sayin.
