Why is safety such a preferred need, other than people have decided they are bored with Chris Clemons and want Ed Reed in his prime instead?

    Chris Clemons is playing well.

There's a lot to be said about Ireland. His drafts have been hit or miss; sometimes pretty solid - other times head scratching. He also has had some pretty high selections and has made a lot of trades (for picks and trading picks away). For the most part those have not worked well; his free agency has been below average. I'd put him, right now, as a middling GM. The trouble has been finding true impact, big play players. Every team that is a title contender has them (and they don't have to be found in the 1st round or at the top of the 1st - Gronkowski; Welker; Brady; Cruz/Nicks; Bradshaw; Jennings/Nelson; etc.). Still waiting for Ireland to land a couple of more of players who will have that type of impact. The basic problem is, even if he gets a big play WR in this draft - it isn't likely he's going to be an impact player for another year after that - and then, what other positions will have to be shored up? He has to hit a big draft and maybe even free agent pick up or trade that actually works if he is going to move to a position of a championship GM.

The bottom-line, however, is this team is 2-3. It's a 16 game season.

I'd rather see a CB so Marshall can go back to being a damn good safety, thereby strengthening two spots.

    Rather simple really.

The D-Line is fine, the LB's are fine, and yet our Defense isn't dominant. Just merely, very good. All that is left are turnover creating DB's. The easiest target is Clemons.

I agree that CB is more important than FS for now... but not that Clemons is "playing well". He is playing adequately. Average. That's more accurate.

Thing is, if you get a second pass rushing DE, and a good cornerback it won't matter who the damned safeties are. QBs won't be able to throw on us.

This is true. I thought Clemons made a few solid tackles and showed better instincts today. Just my 2 cents.

Clemons also had an atrocious play go deep on him because he simply can't take angles and can't play the ball in the air. Clemons is a bad free safety

We better hope Tannehill will be able to play keep up because these safeties and cornerbacks are going to be exposed when this team faces the elite QBs.

I brought this thread back because in all the cheers for Ireland, there seems to be someone who has been completely forgotten. In looking at the starting roster at this time, there are only fiver starters who have only been with the team for the past two years. These starters are Tannehill, Pouncey, Bush, Martin, and Burnett. Paul Soliai is a starter who was with the team when the new regime took over.

Every other starter now on the offense and defense, along with the punter and the kicker were drafted or signed as free agents while Bill Parcell was in charge of running football operations. I have always felt that Ireland as the teams GM should be credited and blamed for all the successes and failures of the players selected and signed over the past five years. Some on here though have praised Ireland, yet blamed Parcells for every player which didn't work out while he was running the team.

Perhaps now that the team appears headed in the right direction, many of the Parcell haters will have to give him credit for the fact that 7 of the starters on offense and 9 of the players on defense are players drafted or signed under the Parcell regime. He and Ireland certainly made some bad personnel decisions over the time Parcell was in Miami, but he also deserves much of the credit for all the starting players he helped draft and sign in free agency while he was with the organization.

To me Parcells worst mistake was in thinking that Chad Henne would ever be a productive starting QB in the NFL.Ireland certainly deserves the credit for drafting Tannehill and finally getting rid of Henne. In hindsight though, it appears Parcells didn't mess up this organization nearly as much as some people want to claim he did.

Parcells didn't finish the job, he left the team in a lame duck situation, his # 1 coach prospect failed, his coordinator failed.

I would think that the structure allowed Ireland to make picks in mid to later rounds, undrafted free agents, Parcells I believe handled the money picks and big tmoney free agents, a must taking over a franchise that was in turmoil.

Tannehill..Bush..Thomas..Miller..Pounce..Bess..Hartline..Jerry..Mrtin..Lane..Wake..Vern..Solai..Burnett..Misi..RJones..Clemons..Carroll..MCD..Wilson..Looking at the situation, I wouldn't bet Parcells had anything to do with acquiring those players.

I don't think any of us know exactly how much input Parcell had in player personnel decisions. I am not defending how he left the organization, and I certainly would never defend him for his choice of Sparano as the teams HC. Of course if you like Ireland as the teams GM, it was Parcell who hired him.

When Parcell came to the Dolphins, he basically said that he only came here because of Wayne Huizenga. Once Huizenga sold the team to Ross, I just don't think Parcell wanted to remain with the organization. His contract allowed for him to leave once Huizenza sold the team, but he remained with the organization for another year and a half. I don't think Parcell did a great job while he was with the team, but whether or not you want to give him credit or not, he left a lot of players on the Dolphins roster who are now contributing to the Dolphins turn around.

I think they still have several holes to fill to get to that next level, but if you are going to credit Ireland for many of those players, just remember who hired Ireland in the first place. I just don't think Parcell did the terrible job many people on here seem to think he did. Of course I would have still rather had Matt Ryan with the first pick in the 2008 draft.

The difference is Philbin getting more out of those players. Maybe they just trust Philbin more, maybe Philbin has coached these players better than they've been coached before, I think both is true. The problem is people don't want to give Ireland credit for Philbin. Historically the GM gets credit for bringing in a new coach that works out for the better of the team. Some people are just Hell bent on not giving Ireland credit for anything. They say its because of Ross.
Personally, I only judge Ireland after Parcells was out of the picture, or the year he stepped back. But whether people buy in to that or not, they should give Ireland credit for Philbin and realize Philbin made lemonade out of lemons, and everyone's gotta like the 5 new starters and give Ireland credit for that. IMO case closed! lol

I have been as negative about Ireland and Ross as anybody on this forum. I certainly am willing to give both of these men all the credit in the world for hiring Philbin. I also give Ireland credit for the players he drafted and signed in free agency who are playing effectively since Parcell left the organization. I agree that Philbin and his coaching staff have done a much better job of developing the players on the roster. My point was just that Parcell was the man running the football operations when the majority of the starters were drafted or signed in free agency.

If people are going to blame him for the wrongs they feel he did while he was with the Dolphins. He also deserves some of the credit for the fact that so many of the starters now on the Dolphins were selected or signed by him and the GM he hired. I am certainly willing to accept that Ireland has done a better job than I thought before this season began. I also can't blame Parcell for everything that went wrong while he was with the organization.

:001_rolleyes:............Gimme a break with this stuff. It figures an anti-Ireland protestor would come up with some nonsense to credit Parcells for our recent turnaround despite being a couple years removed from his position. Parcells had us in mediocrity. PERIOD. Don't try to spin it. Much of our key pieces including coaching staff were either drafted, signed, or hired by Ireland, especially if Ireland conducted the '09 draft as was supposedly stated by Parcells. Let's also not forget that Ireland was reportedly in charge of the late round picks and rookie FAs.
So let's look at the list:

    • The entire current coaching staff
    • All 3 QBs (not sure why you're downplaying the significance of QB & coaching staff)
    • At least 2 of our starting Oline. Pouncey & Martin (and promising backup, Samuda)
    • All 4 running backs
    • Starting FB
    • All WRs (Too bad Parcells didn't improve upon this list)
    • Starting Hback
    • All 3 traditional DEs
    • All the Cornerbacks
    • All the Safeties
    • Burnett and all the backup LBs
    • Both backup rotational DTs
    • Starting Kicker
    • Starting kick/punt returner
Parcells had nothing to do with Soliai & Fields, so you can scratch those 2 studs off his list, too... and both Ireland & Parcells wanted Fasano.... and Long was essentially an inherited #1 pick from the previous regime's failure. Signing Tennessee's backup DT, Randy Starks, was likely more of Ireland's doing considering he was Dallas's Head of Pro & College Scouting just a few months prior, meanwhile Parcells was previously retired and working for ESPN.

So what you're saying by default is that Ireland didn't mess up the organization like you initially attested. :wink2:

If you're a czar who can't bring a team above mediocrity then you deserve no credit for its success after your departure. None. By your flawed argument Randy Mueller was a success b/c he left us with Soliai & Fields.

If Ireland turns out to be a misunderstood gem, I'll give him credit, but he surely didnt set up his protege for success...The dude has had a rough start to his career..

My position on this subject hasn't wavered, I said from the beginning we should know by midseason how his last two offseasons deciding on coaching and player personnel..

We're here..and At the midway point, it looks real good for him being retained..based on just those two responsibilities, and how he's set us up for this offseason.

Ahhh, so you were highly critical of Ireland & Ross yet you're now trying to make a point that Parcells was the man running the football operations when he was here. Do you fail to see the irony here?.... b/c it should be staring you in the face.
Of course not b/c you were too busy blaming Ireland despite now stating that it was Parcells's show. It amazes me what you'll stoop to here. When things look bad to you, you throw all the blame on Ireland & Ross.... but now that things are looking up a few years removed from Parcells, you're doubling back and trying to throw our current success onto Parcells.

You already turned in your opinion card on our current state months ago, so you don't get to take an eraser to it, doctor it up, and resubmit it.

agreed, but who hired him? And who drafted the recent difference making starters on our team? And who finally drafting not only a QB in the 1st round, but the right QB for the first time in almost 30 years?
Why is it hard to give Ireland and Philbin praise? not just one.

And we wonder why we can never go a week without an Irish thread.

Yes, we destroyed an impotent Jets team, were 4-3, and our offense and defense is ranked in the bottom half of the league. Is that the 5 superbowls I would still hate Irish after???

Do me a favor, let ME enjoy the win, before dredging up more Irish nonsense. This is a classic predictable message board move. It's ill-timed and obnoxious. Where have we been the last decade? How about some humility with our MODEST record?

Do you know what you're looking at, pappy? The lower the number the better, FYI. :tongue2:
Defensive stats that matter are not ranked in the bottom half of the league.

    • Points per game: 5th
    • QBR (75.4): 4th
    • Completion %: 4th
    • Rushing ypc: 1st
    • Sacks: 6th (one shy of 3rd)
    • 3rd Down %: 1st

Duh. #1 offense gains the most yards. #1 defense allows the least. Not exactly a groundbreaking revelation.

In one category, total yards. Phinsational was right too, about the rankings in the other categories. Which one would you consider more important? Being 5th in least points allowed, or being 22nd in yards allowed?

Points. But when they rank Ds, that's not the one they use. And we haven't exactly faced too many prolific Os, save for the one that hammered us point wise week 1.

The best offense we've faced outside of Houston, believe it or not, is the *Jets. Yep.

*Although they have the most points scored of any team the Dolphins have faced besides Houston, they've played 8 games while the Bengals have only played 7. The Raiders have also only played 7, but they're the Raiders.

haven't read this thread in awhile but I am obviously pleased with how the team is playing. I think that it really falls on Philbin's shoulders though. Hopefully we can upgrade our talent even more next year... there are definitely some solid pieces on the roster.
